NEW YORK. May 22. The stock mar ket fell still further into apathy today,, and was relieved from seml-stagnatlon only by the movement In the Erie stocks. Considering the present indifference of the speculative public to the market the volume of transactions In .Erie must be accepted as significant. The professional traders, at a loss to secure even a frac tional profit in the market, flocked to the Erie movement and addefi their specula tive operations to the buying of the stock. The opinion, however, gained force on thevexchange that the movement. marked a resumption of operations for the ex tension of Influence and, control of ex isting railroad systems. The buying was attributed to "Wabash interests and there were sundry circumstances which offered some corroboration. Statements- were published this morning to the effect that a controlling interest had been secured in Lackawanna In order to afford an out let to the seaboard for the "Wabash and the Gould Southwestern system. This evidently presented an effort to account for the recent strength of Wabash and its Southwestern affiliations in the face of the disappointment over the non-declaration of a dividend on Missouri Pacific. It has been stated with particularity for several days past that the buying of To ledo, St Louis & Western stocks -was for VanderblH account, and it was claimed today that control had passed. It Is to be noticed that these roads run over closely-related -territory, and the activity In their stocks favors the pre sumption that the problem of their fu ture relations and control is being worked out. The strength of Chicago, Indian apolis & Louisville and of the Chicago Great Western stocks may 'have had a bearing on the same problem. The strength of the bituminous coal-carrying roads was directly attributable to the declaration of a dividend of V& per cent on the common stock of Hocking Valley, the first In Its history. The Wheeling & Lake Erie stocks, Norfolk "Si Western, and Chesapeake & Ohio all moved upward in sympathy. The strength of Readings was cajled In sympathy with Erie In its char acter as an anthracite carrier, but Erie was the only one of the group to maln tairfjts advance.' This stock closed at the highest at a gam of 2. Some of the individual blocks purchased ran as high as 6000 shares. A feature of the day was a ale ot Northern Pacific at 171, compared with 156 last night, but the stock dropped back again to 160. An unpleasant impres sion was produced by a suggestion that the authorities of the London exchange would rescind the suspension of rules for buying in of Northern Pacific stock against the shorts. At the last settle ment It will be remembered the dlfficulty on this account was adjusted by allowing the shorts to carry over at a fixed price. But this left their contracts still uncov ered, and the buying in of shorts for the next settlement, which occurs next week, would be the occasion for renewed un easiness. This suggestion and the an nouncement of $500,000 exported gold had a part In the early heaviness of the mar ket. The" fact that there was no addi tional gold engagements, contrary to ex pectation, may have had some Influence In the later hardening of prices, but the vigorous advance In Erie was the main factor. A number of minor industrial stocks were strong on very palpable ma nipulation. In the general list changes are small and somewhat mixed. The bond market was not very active, but showed some strength. "Total sales, par valu'j, $4,450,000. , United States new 4s declined per cent on the last call. BONDS. " 1 XJ. Sfis, xtt. reg.lO(N. The Dally Telegraph, in its financial article, says it understands that all op tions done with the Morgans extending as far forward as the end of October have been allowed to be recalled at otico In consideration of a cash payment of 55 per share, adding,: "This Is remarkably generous treatment and will assist in bringing to light undiscovered bears." Proceeding then to discuss the present position, it says: "It does not seem rea sonable to expect the Morgans to- do more than they have done to help the bears out The solution appears to rest with Kuhn. Loeb & Co." The Times, in Its financial article, after confirming the report of the Morgan ar rangement, says: "It Is to be hoped that other houses will follow the lead of the Morgans. In any event, the situation Is still unsatisfactory. It cannot be al lowed to exist for an Indefinite period, as seems to be fondly hoped In some quaT ters. It will probably be wise to grant the bears some future delay, but it ought to be short." Kew York Stock. These quotations are furnished by R "Vy. The American Wool and Cotton Reporter will say tomorrow? A number of large mills have been rep resented In the. wool market the tfast week, and there has been generally more looking .around on the part of manufac turers. But the business transacted, has consisted mostly of small lots, the aggre gate of which, howaver, makes a fairly good-sized total. Consumers are still buying only to meet current needs, and as regards prices they are buying very carefully. It Is Impos sible fcr holders to secure any advance in prices and the market, except possibly on fine wools, Is In buyers favor, although quotations arejiot noticeably lower than those of a week ago. The new wools are slow In moving In thlsnarket. Duplicate orders for heavy-weights are coming for ward In greater volume than a week ago. This Is' helpful and welcome to the man ufacturer, and. If continued, may be the reflector of a better demand for wool. The sales for the week In Boston amounted to 2.877,000 pounds domestic, and 630.00Q pounds foreign, making a totalof 3527,000 pounds, against a total of 3,600. 000 for the previous week, and a total or 2,553,000 pounds for the corresponding week last year: '.The sales since January 1 amount to 88,837.900 pounds, against 60,316, 90J pounds for the corresponding time last year. . - ST.
