The rosy dream of a monster reception In honor of President McKinley, the vision of a military parade headed by the Third Regiment of Oregon National Guard, the gallant members of the Grand Army of the Republic, civic organiza tions, and the "human flag" as star features, the historic ceremony of the breaking of ground for the Lewis and Clark Centennial, and the patriotic spec tacle of thousands of bright-faced school children waving flags in graceful salute to the Chief Executive of the land, the sight of thousands of visitors pushing wPfTl BULLETIN. The money that was raised will have to be returned, as it was received on the con dition that it was to be used only for the Presidential reception. Whether the committee will remain in existence to ar range for the entertainment of the visit ing Congressmen is a question for the committee to determine." ' "Let's Hut e a Fourth," Says McAllen Dan McAllen, the pioneer Fourth of July man, started a boom for the great National event Immediately upon heating that the President's trip had been aban doned. He said: "Of course, we all regret that the President cannot visit our city with the prominent men of his party. That would have meant much to this city and its citizens. But what shall we do with the money that has been raised and sub scribed? The committee, as I understand it, has $1S00 in cash and good subscrip tions that will run up the total to about $3000. Now, why not, with such a fine start, turn this Into a Fourth of July fund, and have something .that the whole state will remember in the way of the nnest celebration of the National holiday that Portland has ever given?" And a man who was listening eagerly chipped in, "Now, that's the time you said something." That the announcement was received with regret was manifested by the many expressions heard about town yesterday when Mayor Rowe received a telegram from San Francisco to that effect, that the President would not come North. The telegram received by Mayor Rowe -was from John H. Hall and the mem bers of the local committee In San Fran cisco, who had a conference with the President, and was as follows: "Owing to the serious illness of Mrs. McKInley, the President has abandoned his trip to Oregon, and will return direct to TTashlngton. He desires that his re grets be expressed." Perhaps the most disappointed of Port land's residents "were the schoolchildren. No others had looked forward with greater eagerness to the President's visit, -and for no others had the general com mittee made greater preparations. Mayor Rowe was interviewed yesterday afternoon on the -question of the dispo sition of the funds the committee has raised for the entertainment of the Presidential party, and as to whether the body "will remain organized to act as a reception committee for the Ohio j Y.W.C.A.EMPLOYMENTBUREAU Plans for Household Science School A Seaside Cottagre. The Young "Women's Christian Associ ation has opened an employment .bureau in its secretary's office on the fifth floor of the Macleay building. This is in re sponse to a very urgent demand on the part of the public, many housekeepers having asked for aid In finding young women or girls who are willing to make themselves useful In taking care of chil dren for an afternoon while the mother goes out to call on friends or do neces sary shopping. There are many occa sions of this kind where girls can earn pin-money and at the same time be help fulto others. Information concerning special help of this kind, as well as gen eral household service, will be furnished the public, a fee being charged, since it will, of course, require the time and attention of some capable person to take charge of the bureau. For the present Miss Alma Hunt, the Y. "W. C. A. secre tary, will look after the matter. Office hours will be announced later. Miss Snell. head of the domestic science department at the Oregon Agricultural College, has been engaged to deliver a course of lectures in June. And In the Fall a regular teacher for the household science classes ulll probably be obtained from the East. Arrangements are being made with the Council of Jewish "Women so that the services of this expert teacher may be divided among various local or ganizations, making the expense lighter in proportion for each, Qas stoves and other apparatus will be Introduced for these classes at the Y. TV. C. A., the plan being to make the equipment of this school of domestic science perfect in all its details. High standards of work will be maintained. The travelers' aid committee is prepar ing a list of safe, respectable and pleas ant boarding-places for young girls and women. This list will be posted conspic uously In the Union Depot and other waiting stations, including the wharves where the small river boats land. Al ready the committee has found opportu nity to be of assistance In meeting young girls returning from college, requests to this effect having come in from mothers who live out of town and cannot con veniently send any member of the family to chaperon their daughters. The association expects to open its Summer cottage at Gearhart Park in July before that if there is sufficient demand ror it. This cottage Is a charm ing one. situated on the golf links. The price per week will probably be about 55 $37,000 SUBSCRIBED. Y. 31. C. A. Fund Lacks Only ?S000 of Completion. A few committees are working stead ily on the Y. M. C. A. canvass and are getting results to show for it. Five thousand five hundred dollars has been raised during the past week, including two $1000 subscriptions and one of $500. The total subscribed to date is a little over $37,000. The Board of Directors met yesterday to consider matters. They aTe deter-' mined to see the thing through' but the time is getting short, for the pledges taken are all conditioned upon the whole amount toelnu subscribed by June 1. The sum of $S0OO Is still lacking to make the pledges binding. - The committeemen canvassing the city arevery strongly impressed with the fact7"as they go from man to man, that the association has gained the esteem and good will of the community by its work during, the past four years. Good words tare spoken for it on all sides. , One peculiar feature of the canvass is that jio woman has yet subscribed any thing towards the fund. This is quite exceptional, as In most cities a canvass for this purpose meets with a liberal re sponse' from women, and they can be depe.n4ed URon to give a considerable per centage of'he amount raised. ?
