"sloppy" again yesterday, but the net

steady. Freights are firming up again,
and this is Interfering with the local ben

JTEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
Panic in Jforthern Pacific Excited All
the Selling:.
NEW XORK, May S. The stock market
today offered the novel spectacle of a
bear panic and a bull panic In progress
side by side. The bear panic In Northern
Pacific was the Impelling cause of the
demoralized rush to sell other stocks,
which was held In check for a time after
the astounding opening In Northern Pa-
f clflc, but which gained almost panic force
in the late trading. -
Prices were not toppled over as a di
rect result of calling of loans and forced
liquidation, such as often culminates in
periods of over-speculation, although
there was a very general broadening of
margins and added severity In the scru
tiny of collateral, as was Inevitable In the
uneasy conditions prevailing, but it was
evident that the holders of long stock
were holding their stocks tenaciously and
were waiting to be actually forced out.
The punishment which was being inflict
ed on the shorts in Northern Pacific was
so distressing an example as to keep the
bears in a timid frame of mind, and they
hesitated to. attack the market. The sup
port which came in on the opening dip
helped to encourage the bulls and intimi
date the bears, but the liquidation seemed
so large that the bears took courage and
attacked 'the market after mid-day, and
secured rich returns. As the prices
reached the 10-polnt line the-decline gath
ered force, showing- the dislodging of long
lines of lons stock by the, -wiping out
of margins. A scrutiny of a stock table
will show . the large number of stocks
whose declines extended to between 10 and
20 points, with the result of the wiping
out of the ordinary margins.
The chaotic condition Into which the
market was thrown became alarming in
the afternoon, but the determine;! sup
port which developed and the resultant
tallies, which reached as much as 8 points
in one of two Instances, took away the
effect to a partial extent of the disor
derly drop in prices and even Induced ex
pressions from sqme of the more confl1
dent bulls that the health of the mar
ket was- greatly Improved as a result
of the day's happenings. The apparently
unlimited buying orders which appeared
in United States Steel preferred when
the decline had reached 12 points, and
the resulting rally of S points, gave some
of the bull speculators the courage to
claim that the day's reaction was really
engineered by the powerful financial in
terests which have been behind the bull
market throughout, with a desire to shake
off weak followers, and that it was not
out of proportion to the unprecedented
advances which had preceded It, to the
unequalled conditions which at present ob
tain in this country and the prodigious
dimensions of the market and of the
forces which have been at work in it.
Anyone seeking to explain today's
movement would have to go back
over a period of many weeks and
for every suggestion of a great financial
combination or consolidation he will have
to suppose a deep-seated doubt or appre
hension, such as was shown by the Dis
closures of this morning in Northern Pa
cific It came as a chilly shock to specu
lation that the country's great financial
forces, which It was supposed were earn
estly working In accord to secure a com
munity of interests In the whole railroad
world, were in fact arrayed against each
other In measures of bitter retaliation and
antipathy. The Burlington deal, on which
such far-reachlns conclusions have been
based by the speculators, was seen to be
in Jeopardy. It was learned that the
level to which prices had attained had
induced insiders, presumably best posted
on the value of their properties, to sell
sufficient holdings to endanger their con
trol. This explanation of the competitive buy
ing which has induced some of the recent
sensational advances threw doubt upon
the whole series of rumors of plans for
great consolidations and transcontinental
combinations among the railroads. In
other words, the broad Intimation was
carried by the disclosures growing out ot
the Northern Pacific development that re
cent great buying of" stocks was for the
most part wholly speculative and without
the supposed basis In Investment purposes.
Add to this the growing constrictions of
the money supplyi continued Insatiable de
mands from the stock speculation, in
roads .upon the narrow bank surplus by
the taking of gold" to Europe today, and
growing- uneasiness among money-lenders
as to the stability of values of the
securities which they hold as collateral,
and the delicacy of the position Is easily
seen. It Is not surprising, therefore, that
the shock of the Northern Pacific epi
sode, coming upon this situation, toppled
its prices over.
Northern Pacific's skyrocket course this
morning to 180, compared with 143 at
last night's close and 132 for the London
parity this morning. Is an almost un
precedented happening for short-time
movements In the local stock market.
This stock was up to the figure and
back to the opening figure of 155 within
three minutes. It went as low as 145 af
terward, and as high again as 170, clos
ing at 160. The close corner into which
the shorts were crowded, of course ex
plained this movement. Among the se
verest sufferers In the afternoon slump
may be mentioned St. Paul, which fell

Illinois Central, 11; Burlington. 10;
Brooklyn Rapid Transit, 10; Kansas &
Texas, 10; Western Union, 10, and other
stocks all the way up to 6 points.
The final rally reduced most of these
losses considerably, but the closing
EhOTYed speculative sentiment In much dis
order and prices were breaking anew at
some points, while rallying at others.
The excitement In the stock market dis
tracted attention of the bond market, but
prices went off there in sympathy with
stocks. Total sales, $4,660,000.
United States old 4s advanced per

Chicago Grata and Provisions. .
CHICAGO, May 8.-J'uly wheat opened
firm on buying by houses with
Continental connections and because
of. light Northweste .receipts. A
cablegram reported seyere -weather
in France and declared consid
erable flamage "had been done. Upon the.
announcement of this news the foreign
buying; was supplemented by purchases
for the' local account, and July having
opened a shade lower to higher; at
72c to 73c, and sold off to 72c on profit
taking rallied to 73.73?aC. A later cable
gram gave the Inference that the French
damage reports had been exaggerated.
This left the trade to the consideration
of the absence of export demand and
the remarkable prospects of a bumper
crop in this country Selling for the local
account met practically no demand and
July gradually worked off on a very dull
market at 72c and closed weak, lc under
yesterday, at 7272c.
May corn was not traded In any extent,
nor was the July option, for that matter.
May closed c lower, at 52c; July closed
a. shade up. at 46c.
The ale, of 1,000,000 bushels of cash
oats was responsible for a bulge In that
market and increased activity in the
trade.. Report of unfavorable crop con
ditions was influential in advancing
prices. July closed c higher, at 27c.
Provisions were dull and easier on the
liberal run of hogs and lower prices for
them at the yards. July pork closed
l7c lower, lard and ribs 57c down. -

Foreign Financial News.
NEW YORK, May 8. The Commercial
Advertiser's oLndon financial cablegram
says:
Business was much reduced on the mar
ket here today. The heaviness was gen
eral, but Americans particularly suffered.
Money rates tightened, and trade reports
are rather disappointing. On the Conti
nent "everything is dull. American shares
were paralyzed by the corner in North
ern Pacific, which has made the market
afraid to deal In anything. This sensa
tional movement, with its unprecedented
penalties upon arbitrage brokers who
were caught short in Northern Pacific,
has done the worst" service imaginable
to the London market, terrorizing specu
lation and sowing the deepest distrust.
The highest price for the stock here was
141, the close being at 132, though It was
reported here that the stock had gone
to 200 in New York.

committee of the Stock Exchange today
acted favorably on the petition to close
the exchange Saturday of this week. An

give members a much-needed opportunity
to catch up with back work, as .well as
to enable workmen to make the necessary
changes on the trading floor.
BOSTON WOOL MARKET. x
Trade at Tlmen Has Been Absolutely
Lifeless.
BOSTON, May 8. The American. Wool
and Cotton Reporter will say tomorrow:
The wool market has been very quiet
since our last review, and at times the
trading has been absolutely stagnant.
Prices of wool are very steadily held,
and, except on one-half and three-eighths
blood stock we can hear of no conces
sions being granted. Most of the trad"
ers are figuring on securing new wools
on a clean cost 01 40c, out a numoer of
those who have recently bought wools of
the growers say they are actually costing
them only 3738c, except where they con
tain a considerable amount of staple, in
which case they have cost 40c, and In
some instances 42c.
The sales for the week at Boston
amounted to 1,875,000 pounds domestic and
135,000 pounds foreign, making a total of
2,010,000 pounds, against a total of 3,577,
000 pounds for the previous week. The
sales since January 1 amount to 81,710,
000 pounds, against 55,332,000 pounds for
the corresponding time last year.

German Raves Over American Girls.
Berlin Herr Pascal, one of the best
known Berlin feuilletonists, Is In raptures
over the beauty of American women. Tou
don't see them on the street because there
are not flaneurs in America, male or fe
male. They wait for the evening .social
gatherings, when every one Is directed
toward them. It Is here, surrounded "by
elegant refinement, blazed on by light,
that the American-woman bears away the
palm of beauty. Herr Pascal cannot
speak too highly of the bodily exercise
which American women enjoy as school
girls and of the pains taken, the "sci
entific supervision," he calls It, for obtain,
ing a natural development of the bust
and "a graceful and rounded appearance
to the hips." No wonder, he concludes,
that their elastic formsr fresh color,
healthy ways, their entire being, carry
away the victory from European women.
If America does not produce the finest
bronzes 'and marbles It certainly produces
the most beautiful women. America's
finest sculptors are her teachers of gym
nastics. New Tork World.
