Country dealers who held the product "While the market was strong, are prompted by the present downward ten dency to dispose of their goods. The "butter market continues steady on an easy basis. Store grade has a. stronger demand -and prices have gone up a little,, stimulated by San Francisco orders. This market Is just beginning to open to Oregon dealers. Cold storage has not attained its maximum yet. only a few 3ots having been put away. General Im provement in the market may be looked lor, inasmuch as shipments to Alaska are about to begin, and speculators are getting Teady to store for winter. A shipment of very good Tillamook cheese arrived a few days ago, and has ready sale. The poultry situation has been much better this week, for the market has been .ble to dispose of its stocks promptly. Potatoes are steady and strong. The product Is brought up largely from San Francisco, where prices little by little -have been creeping upward. As high as $1 25 is paid In the local market for very choice grades.. Some farmers are hold ing the few potatoes they have left for Ugher prices. Shortness of onion supply Is made good by California reds, which 3ceep prices from advancing. As 6weet potatoes have almost run their season and deterioration reaches a high per centage, they will soon be out oj the market. Oranges are stlffer in price. Mexican tomatoes have been In supply the last few days at 52 50 per box. Only a few bananas are on hand. The last shipment of California produce Is about consumed, excepting a few remnants. Violent Break in Prices as Resnlt of Recent Overspecnlation. NEW YORK, May 3. The set-back in prices this afternoon was the most vio lent which has occurred since the pres ent bull speculation set in. It was abso lutely without cause in news of anything that would do harm to intrinsic values of securities, commerce or Industry. The danger has been obvious that the specula tion was overrunning the bounds of rea son and" safety. The buying was admit tedly without motive or information be yond the hope and belief'that there would be enough future buyers to lift prices to a higher plane and so offer profits. There were exceptions in the case of the great market leaders' In which there were plausible theories and reports of buying to change control. But In thesft also the horde of speculators who have followed precipitately each movement for several weeks was a very large element In the buying. Increasing trepidation has been felt among commission brokers and lenders of money, who assume responsi bility for speculative buyers, that many of this class were stretching their re sources unduly, dependent as they are on the maintenance of the prices of securities to keep their credit good. As a conse quence there has been Increasing pressure from commission houses upon their cus tomers to take their profits "and lighten their load. But the buying demand was constantly reinforced by newcomers, and the inroads -upon the money market ex tended. The prellmlnary.figures of tomor row's bank statement made It clear thati only a weak showing can be hoped for from that statement, and the bankers be gan calling loans to recuperate their po sition. The call loan rate ran upto 7 per cent, and the speculators began to manifest acute distress as they found themselves forced to look about for new accommoda tions. The extreme sensitiveness of the situation was made manifest In the vio lence tf the reaction by what was really a moderate hardening in the money rate. The delicacy of the situation was en hanced by the furious speculation this morning In Atchison, St. Paul, Rock Island, Baltimore & Ohio, Mlsspurl Pacific and a number of stocks Influenced by these movements. Advances of 3& to 7 had resulted during the morning among these stocks, St. Paul being particularly buoyant. When the pressure came upon the market these stocks were naturally among those who were most acutely af fected by the selling. Enormous blocks were unloaded on the decline". The drop In Atchison reached 9, St. Paul 9, Rock Island 8. Northern Pa cific 8, Baltimore & Ohio Union Pacific 7, Missouri Pacific '6&, New York Central 6, Illinois Central 5, Wabash preferred 5, Kansas &. Texas preferred 5, Atchi son 4, Sugar 4, and a large number of other stocks between 1 and 4 points. -The bears were so eager to tak prdfits riftr their Jong abstinence that their demand to cover caused rallies amdng these stocks Of from" 2 to 4 points; .But the. rallies .were- not well held, .and prices went! off 'again, income cases to the lowest. -The closing was -feverish and unsettled, ana the undertone continued weak?v The "prellmihary "figures of tomorrow's bank statement Indicate a gain In the in terior movement of less thaw 52.000,000 to offset the loss to the Subtreasury,., which ' was reduced in today's statement py me payment of Government checks and bond redemptions to 54,715,000. But the extent of the disturbances in the monej market today indicated that the available..surplus pf the banks had been considerably im paired by the great demand of the stock market speculation, as well as by this in dicated loss In cash of nearly 53,000,000. The easier tone of the sterling exchange market followed naturally from, the sDarp demand for money, and there were "3 further .engagements of gold for export tomorrow. Bonds gave way- in sympathy with stocks, but there was no great activity In the general list. Total sales, 55,755,000. Indeed, In this depart ment the trading was nothing less than frantic from start to finish. The oscilla tions of prices were of the most violent character, heavy waves of profit-taking being succeeded by equally heavy buying movements. New York took a hind in making the mad seesaw swing, but In the street this support vanished suddenly anda sharp collapse ensued. During the day on the board Atchlsons spurted from 87 to 92, finishing In the street at 83i. Denver & Rio Grande went from 48& to 52; Baltimore & Ohio from 113?i121116: Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul from 1781SS1S5. Union Pa cifies were heavy all day at about. 130, slumping In the street to 126. The market opinion here Is that the Eries, Reading and Southerns are the only railway stocks left to take In .hand.
