ONLY AT SHERIFFS OFFICE
BICTCLE TAX CANNOT BE PAID TO
COLLECTORS.
Time Will Be Given for All to Buy
Tn&ra, Then Delinquents' Wheels
Will Be Selred.
The bicycle tax is payable at the
Sheriff's office, and not to outside col
lectors, "who are yet to be appointed. The
Sheriff will collect the tax for a stated
period, say two weeks, or perhaps a
month, depending: upon the number of
tags disposed of dally. If the amount of
business transacted the next two weeks
denotes a general disposition on the part
of bicyclists to pay the tax, the time to
pay will be extended -for a while. There
after the tax win "be declared delinquent
and payment will be enforced by outside
deputies by the seizure of wheels. The
County Court yesterday made the levy
of the tax to apply qnly to those riding:
on bicycle paths. The following order
"was also made by Judge Cake and County
Commissioners Mack and Showers:
"In the matter of the Issuance of a
warrant for the collection of license tax
on certain bicycles for the year 1901: It
appearing to the Court that persons rid
ing bicycles on the paths of this County j
have not paid the license tax as required
by law. It Is hereby ordered that a war
rant be issued by the Clerk of the County
Court to the Sheriff of the County direct
ing him to collect a license tax of $1 on
all delinquents as shall not have paid
said license tax prior to this date, and
directing him to seize and sell as upon
execution any bicycle for the amount
of said license tax, together with costs
and expenses of such seizure and sale,
a"nd if none be found, such license tax
to be collected out of any property of
said delinquent in the same manner as
other delinquent taxes are collected."
The Sheriff, as previously stated, will
not place this order into execution until
he has given wheelmen an opportunity
for several weeks to call and procure
tags at the Sheriff's office. Subsequently
this delinquent order will be enforced,
and deputy Sheriffs will be stationed on
bicycle paths to take possession of all
untagged wheels, to be sold, etc
The statute provides that It shall be
unlawful for any person to ride on a bi
cycle path a bicycle on which the license
has not been paid. The deputies will not
be sent out with tags to collect the tax,
bUt to seize wheels. The tax must be
paid at the Sheriff's office as other taxes
are paid. Those who wish to use bicycle
paths and to assist in the building of
others will do well to secure tags im
mediately. Nearly 200 have been thus far
disposed of.
the proposed stove factory and woolen
mills will come up for consideration. The
Peninsula board will meet at University
Park. It will have Important business.
Reports will be received from committee
on cleaning up the Peninsula, and also
from the committee of the Lewis and
Clark.Centennial site. The Montavilla
board will meet in Odd Fellows' hall.

License for a Gresliam Man.
The saloon conducted by Ford Metzger
nt Rrpsham is still meeting with oppo
sition from some of the residents of that
place. Yesterday David Cathay filed a
petition in the State Circuit Court to re
view the act of the County Commission
ers granting Metzger a license.
Cathay avers that Metzger, on Febru
ary 16, 1901, caused an advertisement to
be inserted as required by law, stating
that he would apply for a liquor license ,
on March IS to the County Court. The j
petition, it is stated, was published only
twice, namely, February 16 and 23, and
that in the meantime a remonstrance was
ger would not have obtained the license.
Not long ago Metzger was fined $200 for
running a saloon without a license.
