11 T"R MORNING OKEdONIAN, 3ATUKDAY, APKIL 27, 1901. ) COMMERCIAL AND Package coffee again has declined c, snaking a fall of lc In the past two weeks. Onions have gone up, and best grades command $4 004 50 per sack. The stock which sells at these prices Is Australian, the only flrst-class product in full supply at present. Oregon high grade are-practically consumed, and the San Francisco market has risen so that the cause of the local high prices is pain. Potatoes are steady at advanced quotations. Farmers In general are selling out, instead of haz arding a drop from present fancy prices. Eggs started out at 14c yesterday morn ing, grew stronger in the afternoon, and Anally were quoted at 14c at some places. Several dealers asked 15c, but only a few small sales attained it. Ruling prices are 2414&c, and are strong. There is mani fest desire to get quotations up, because &t present retailers get slight, if any, profit. Receipts have picked up a little in the past few days. Any considerable rise will tend to discourage cold storage. Butter is weak, but steady. Lower grades feel the depression most. Small quantities of store are being exported to San Francisco. Demand has improved lately. Poultry moves off very slowly, and Is weak, in spite of smaller receipts. Demand for Oregon cheese continues strong. The depleted vegetable market was sup plied yesterday by -usual steamer receipts of California produce. Cauliflower was higher, but In the main other prices ranged the same as before. Tomatoes are slack, but, owing to inferior grade, are not advanced. Better stock will arrive to day by express. Oregon vegetables are gradually supplanting California. The height of the mohair season is passed, and receipts are lessening. Wool is quiet. Two purchases amounting to 330,000 pounds of last year's clip were made at Eugene a few days ago. This amount was Increased to 200,000 pounds by other purchases in smaller lots. The "price was not given out, but it is certain that the sellers did not make anything, and perhaps lost, by holding so long. Clearing-Honae Statement. Clearings. Balances. Etc The European market made a much bet ter response to the strength on this side of the water than it has made at any time since the spurt began. San Francisco Is feeling the need of rain, and the record breaking crop which that state promised a few weeks ago has gone glimmering to such an extent that half a crop will be satisfactory under present circumstances. In the Portland market there Is some "wheat changing hands, and sales of Walla Walla have been made as high as 60c This is a pretty full value, even on the improved market, and some of the ex porters are not inclined to handle the cereal at that figure. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says: Brisk business was done on the stock exchange today. The tone was cheerful. The American department quieted down, and there were fewer fireworks than on any day for some time. Prices were hard until New York sent over selling orders, supposed to be In anticipation of the hol iday tomorrow. The closing of the stock exchange in New York will give London the first chance to act upon the bank statement The Baltimore & Ohio led in the trad ing. The other features were Missouri Pacific, Kansas & Texas and Denver & Rio Grande, which were strong, on the announcement of the election of Mr. Gould as president of the Denver road. In Union Pacific there was a disposition to take profits. All these stocks, how ever, were eclipsed in the trading by the shares of the United States Steel Corpo ration, which made a record. The volume of trading In them was far beyond any thing seen In these stocks since their in troduction here. The' preferred, which London favors, were especially strong and active. Application has been made for official quotations of them upon the stock exchange, so that London sees that these stocks have come here to stay. Money, Exchange, Etc. NEW YORK, April 26. May wheat opened to c higher at 73 to 73c. under a rush of buying orders occasioned by a sharp advance at Liverpool, and the good cash business done yesterday. Trade for an hour was well distributed and prices changed but little. Later the liberality of receipts and slackness of the cash de mand created weakness which was in tensified by the unloading of -a long line of half a million. May in this way was forced back to 72c. Buyers, influenced somewhat by rumors of sales taken In German interests, regained confidence Jater, and the market reacted, closing firm with May c higher at 73c. Snow, In the Orange Judd Farmer, sums up the crop situation by saying, as a whole, think nothing has oc curred to change the opinion as to the wheat crop. He adds that conditions are unusually good for spring wheat seeding and good progress has been made. -Some few struggling reports of damage as to wheat In the Southwest are floating around. The cause assigned is almost uni formly insects. These do not as yet cover a large enough field, nor are present condi tions definite enough as yet upon which to base a reasonable fear of Important damage. Cash demand fair, also good ex port and domestic demand. This, togeth er with the strange tone of cables today, has given this' market a. firmer tone.
