THE MOENINO- OREGONIAIS, WEPEQDAX APRIL SA, 1901. 11 n v H COMMERCIAL AND Xiocal buslnes son Front street yester day was quieter, bat -oat of town trade, which has taken m large proportions lately, kept the general market active. Potatoes were stationary" at quotations and very strong, -with upward tendency. Receipts were unusually large, 500 sacks having come from Washington, and from Lewis River, besides a carload or two from the valley. Local farmers also Increased their deliveries. The general desire of farmers seems to-be to avail themselves . of present good .prices in stead of ioVhazard decline. All available product is. being taken up by speculators. Ban Francisco Is making high" bids and most of the jocal supply will He sent there. , Butter Is weak in spite of lower prices. Creamery has some market, but other grades -are- very sluggish. Furjther de cline, however, is not looked for, and it Is thought "the market vtfll sustain pres ent quotations. "When quality shall at tain Its best, storage and larger denland will relieve "the overstocked situation. Eggs are very strong at 14c, and may break over that figure. The market is relUctafit to advance, but this indisposi tion may not kjecp quotations down. In view of reported country sales as high as lSc and over. Speculators who are stor ing are doing their best to hold prices even, but their competition has a buoying Influence. Chicken receipts have lessened la volume, perhaps in sympathy with up ward tendency of e$gs, and also because of their owxi weakness. Demand for poul try is stjll light. The vegetable market will not have much on hand until tomorrow, when fresh California will be on hand. The only sup plies at present are a few left over odds and ends. "Very excellent Oregon rhu barb is coming in freely, and prices have declined. Domestic asparagus is in mar ket, but there Is not enough to keep demand supplied without California. Ap ples are running low. Bananas will be short before arrival of new supply at the last of the week. The next carload of sweet potatoes will probably be the" last large consignment. Onions are steady. California strawberries are getting to he common. 4 Oats are strong and advance is .not im probable. Keg pickles have gone up 10c Mohair receipts have slackened a little, as the meridian of the season is passed. Wool is quiet, although a few opening Indications of the coming season have appeared. In spite of weakening in wheat in the East yesterday," following close upon the rise of the day before, the local market was stronger and advances to 5559c were quoted on Walla Walla. Reports of exiles on basis of 59Jic and 9c had a. stiffening effect, although not confirmed by exporters. In view of threatened cli matic adversities in several quarters, and lri sympathy with the Eastern trend, the inclination was to hold out for full prices, and consequently little was done. JfEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Speculation of Previous Day Repeat ed on Smaller Scale. NEW TORK, April 23. Today's sfock market presented even more variety than that of yesterday, although the high rec ord of transactions established yesterday was not disturbed today. Speculative sen timent ran over pretty much the whole gamut of motions from that of buoyant elation during tltf" morning to something like collapse in the afternoon. Although the market closed at net declines through out, extending in some cases to over 4 points, or even more, there was a time during the morning when the level of prices was materially higher than yester day, and- the market had .the appearance of a full resumption of the bull specula tion. The hlgh-prlqed railroad stocks con tinued to be the principal subject in the speculation, especially St. Paul, - Union Pacific and Southern Pacific. Atchison preferred had a. strong upward movement, and there were points of strength among the Southwesterns. Burlington and North ern Pacific were strong, and held belter than the average of stocks in the late break. Among the.-speclaities, Amalga mated Copper recovered quite' vigorously from yesterday's depression, and the United States Steel stocks, made a show of strength- for the first time In several days. Thtse were the principal centers of early strength in the market, but their influence was radiated, pretty generally through the list. It would be somewhat difficult to assign causes for. the- early strength, or the late weakness, as It Seemed to depend little on the ne"ws bf "the day. The motives jit the, traders were confined for the most part to fears or sus picions of 'what others were doing. Ppw erful support and violent manipulation were "resorted to in the early dealings, and the success of these measures In turning prices upward caused a "heavy covering movement amopg the short-Interest which was formed yesterday. There were Inti mations during the morning that official statements regarding the Burlington deal would be -given out later In 'the day, and a rumor was current that ,it would be found to provide an exchange of bonds to the value of ISO per cent and a cash pay ment of $20 per share, together with a cash payment of $2 per share for the next dividend. The report that the prices of 6teel rails was to be advanced to $28 per ton was the cause of the advance in United States Steel, although professional manipulation was much 'in evidence, as It was in all parts of the market. ' The announcement overnight of $1,000,000 In gold for export seemed tor have little effect on sentiment, and reports were tset afloat that large blocks of Government bonds $vere held ready for redemption, which would provide gold for any export demand without affecting the money mar ket The source of this, available supply of Government bonds was not disclosed. Sterling exphahge also yielded slightly un tfer the ottenngs against the gold ship ment Probably its recovery later In the day was-a large influence in the renewed uneasiness manifest over the money out look. The Subtreasury Is again taking money of the market, and New York ex change In the interior has fallen back. to a discount, Indicating a cessation of the supply of funds from that source. The adjournment of the Burlington di rectors without, offering official announce ment was a disappointment. The success of the bulls in getting prices up was off set by the very heavy offerings to realize attracted by the advance. Tlts was es pecially so In the United States Steel stocks, owing to the suspicion prevalent in Wall street that heavy liquidation Is going on In these stocks on the part of former large interests In 'the Individual companies absorbed by the combination, and who are retiring. Bear selling also became very bold and extensive when tbe futility of the bull efforts to sustain the market began to be seen. The clos ing was weak, at the lowest, and showed such violent declines., from the top level as 514 In Sugar, 4 in. St. Paul, 4& in Brooklyn Transit 4 in Consolidated Gas, AVt in Rock Island and from 1 to over 3 points in a large list of important stocks. The motive for speculative activ ity was that of yesterday namely, the concentration of long May corn in the hands of George H. Phillips and his fol lowing. The deglre for profits, which Is always a factor, was gratified .to a lim ited extent, but the basic strength of the market wa.$ .not impaired. At the open ing longs offered liberally, but 6o sharp was the demand that In the confusion sales were made simultaneously from 46 to 46e, compared with yesterday's close at fi4&c Offerings both of May and July, the latter being also In exoellent demand, suddenly ceased, and both shot upward, May touching 47c, making a new high rec ord for the crop. -Realizing feent May back to 46c, but this was followed by another rally to 47c. During the closing hour of the session fife wheat weakness caused some increase In the offerings by longs, and May worked down tb 46c, but the Close was strong, c over yesterday, "at 46c. July sold between 43?s45o, closing c lower at 44c. Phillips was credited with buying 1,000,000 bushels of July. Much wheat with which bulls loaded themselves was dumped back In the mar ket today because Liverpool failed to fol low the advance on this 6lde. May opened Texas & Pacific... 40 Union Pacific .... 98H do pfd 80 Wabash 10 c lower at 7272c. and It took the combined influences of the corn strength, heavy seaboard clearances and confirma tion of very unfavorable cr6p prospects' In Prussia to get the market up to 72c. As the short interest was small and the cash demand slack, while aoniestic crop advices were as glowing as ever, longs sought to take prpflts, and In so doing broke May to 71c. The close was heavy, lc lower, at 71c. Oats advanced early, In sympathy with corn, but lost the advance on proflt-tak-lnc. Mav closing c lower at 25(H)25c. Profit-taking sale coming on a dull 1 market caused the provision list to ease off. July pork closed 12c lower, and ribs and lard 25c depressed! The leading futures ranged as follows: ' WHEAT.' Suggestion for Street SIriih. PORTLAND, April 23 (To the Editor.) Now that the street sign question Is again before the city, the necessity having .apparently arisen for the renewal of that work, which was done but a few years ago, it strikes- one that -opportunity Is afforded the proper authorities to secure practically permanent results. Even in go small a-matter as street signs' may not business principles be applied to mu nicipal affairs? I think there 'are few citizens who would object to a larger expenditure for this purpose, if by" so doins the work may be done for all time. In our climate no exposed painted sign will endure for ldng; a few months dims It, a "few years obliterate it, and the re sult Is a continuous expense, and mean time a blot upon' the City's face and fame. A stgn well painted upon wood, covered with glass, carefully puttied In. so as to be water tight, and properly put in place, would last 10 times as long as the ordinary tin sign! In fact, If now and then painted It ought to be almost Indestructible by weather conditlpns. Let the contract be let to the lowest bidder. Under the same safeguards any nfiyajte business concern would exercise, and thjn see that It Is carried out accordingly. T,he 1905 Exposition will bring a hundred thousand people to bless the City Council that does this work right. Is the scheme too Utopian to be hoped for? C. H. S. Oregon Mine Notes. The Sumpter.
