THE MOKJNItfO- O.REGOKIAN. WEDNESDAY 4PRIL 10, 1901. COMMERCIAL AND Front-street markets yesterday -were juleter. Quotations -were eteady and only butter showed increased weakness. Indications point to a decline. Dealers have conferred regarding the state of the market, out up to yesterday had not f agreed upon any change. Large supplies are on hand, -which sorrfe dealers have apprehended might go 6tale. Sales yes terday -were at quotations. Eggs were steady and stocks were main tained by usual receipts. Supplies have been outrunning consumption, and the outside demand has been light, and since the product lias not been going Into stor age at a commeniuraie rate, the Infer ence has been drawn" that dealers .are speculating on a prospective Improvement. The upward .tendency at San Francisco may be lending encouragement Sack vegetables, such as beets, parsnips, turnips and carrots, have been scarce for several days. Other vegetables also were limited yesterday, and Oregon were-almost the only kinds in market. Domestic product is improving, especially rhubarb, of which vers' good supply was in yes terday. 'The California steamer Is due tonight with usual produce. A few very choice Newtown apples, from Hood River, found ready sale at $2 50 per box. Receipts of poultry yesterday were larger than for some time, and are ex pected to pick up. Oregon cheese had' the usual strong demand. Oats were steady, perhaps firmer, at quotations. Mohair is coming in steadily, and re ceipts will be stimulated by good weath er. Kids suffered considerably from the late cold rains, a fact which, it Is said, may have its effect on next year's crop. Wool showed no improvement. Bank Clearing. Clearings. Europe showed the usual sym pathy for the decline which has been go- I Ing on in this country since the holiday season was on in force abroad, and the Eastern markets went off over a cent a bushel. In the local market, there was very little doing, buyers were unable to secure wheat on an export basis, and were Indifferent about putting out limits. An astonishing mutation of speculative sentiment waa demonstrated by the action of the stock market today. There was not a sign of the distress and acute anxiety under which the market labored all day yester day. It is the almost invariable rule that such a violent break in prices as that of yesterday brings In overnight an ac cumulation of selling orders from alarmed holders, of stock who wait for dally re ports for their Information on the stock market, but the opening this morning was quiet and unruffled, with no Import ant pressure to sell, and with many nota ble advances induced by the demand of the shorts to cover. Before the day was over, the bull lead ers had recovered their full control -of the situation, and were marking up prices and attracting large following with all the fa cility -which has characterized their oper ations for many weeks past. There was very palpable manipulation, and there were carefully organized operations to support the market. Commission-houses which were prominent in bidding up stocks, and which have acted for largo speculative interests all through the re cent bull campaign, "were free tenders of money below the rate offered by the banks at the same time that they were buying stocks. The rumor of the Burlington deal was'rehabilltated, and had apparently not lost any of Its force, although official con firmation was stilL conspicuously lacking. There was revived credulity in many oth er rumors which have already done good service, including that of the supposed readjustment of General Eloctrlc's cap ital and the Southwestern railroad merg er. THe settlement of the. internal dis sensions in the American Smelting Com pany, the advance in the price of refined sugars, and the absence of any engage ments of gold for export by tomorrow's steamer were all used with effect by the bulls. Advances reached 6 points In Burlington and Rock Island and Northwestern; V& In Northern Pacific, 4 in Texas & Pacific, 4 in Chicago & Eastern Illinois; && In Met ropolitan, 3 in Western Union, 3 in Coni solldated Gas, 4 in Amalgamated Copper; 2 In Sugar; United States' Express, 5& Rubber, 4&; Rubber preferred, &&', and the majority of the principal active stocks from 1 to 2 points. Only In one or two cases were the gains fully maintained, re actions running from 1 to 2, but the market was vigorously supported again, and the close was Irregular. The pressure of profit-taking was not notably heavy, even at advances. Appar ently, the speculative holders of stocks were determined to hold for a further rise, unless they were forced Into liquidation by calling of loans or by wiping out of margins. There was much less calling of loans today than yesterday, and this called attention to several causes for spe cial pressure In yesterday's money mar ket. . Today's clearing-house statement dis closed the enormous total of exchanges of $437,852,980, which is over $12,000,000 in- ex cess of the largest previous day's record In the history of the Ciearlng-House. The general activity of the stock market yes terday had something to do with this, but the settlement growing out of the clear ances in the contracts to deliver the United States Steel stocks, when Issued, was a special factor. The easier money in London today lessened the demand for exchange, and the rate for sterling yield ed a fraction. Yesterday's heavy liquida tion also caused some natural -relief to the money market. There was not lack ing a suspicion that yesterday's. -violent relapse was winked at, if not connived in, by sold-out bull leaders, either to enable them to get 1n at the lower prices or to shake out aweak following and relieve the condiiibri: pf over .speculation. - The bond market was active and irreg ular. The decline once started, long stuff came out In heavy quantities, one operator dumping 2,000,000 bushels into the pit.
