THE MOUSING OREGONIAN, THUKRDAY, MARCH 7, 1901. 11 COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL--NEWS Wheat and wool were at a standstill il wfcek. but there wajs a good run of business in nearly ill other lines. "With wheat off and bearish, exporters show no willingness to make engagements for vessels. Eggs have dropped steadily un der larger supplies- and at the close the market was barely 'firm at 12Va Some lots were sold yesterday at 13c, but they had to grade high to command that figure. The supply pf potatoes is plentiful and prices are weaker. The advance of on ions to 3i.c a pound called out large titter ings and prices arc down. 'The market is well stocked" with vegetables. A carload of celery, .cabbage and cauliflower came In from Los Angeles yesterday morning. The shipment was not In the most satis factory4 condition and it is not likely that further prdqrs will be sent to Los Angeles for rail consignment. Supplies of butter and poultry are 'sufficient to meet the demand. A , "WHEAT The Portland market has been flat all week Jn sympathy with the depression abroad and In the East. Buy ing is principally confined to millers who are not taking heavy stocks. Some Walla Walla sold up to 5G&c for milling purposes, but their price is above the export quota tion. The weather will be a factor from now on.' Present conditions favor the growing crop. Argentine exports from January 1 to March 1 were only 55 per cent of last year, although ocean freights are 25 to 37 per cent less, and the price of wheat S to 10 cents higher. Shipments were G.592,000 bushels against 12,504,000 oushels in January-March, 1900. This heavily decreased movement looks con firmatory of the growing opinion In the trade that the surplus from the Argentine :rop will not greatly exceed "50 per cent of that of last crop. FREIGHTS Market is dull with noth ing doing and no one disposed to do bus iness. Rates are nominally 40s to 41s 3d. There is not a disengaged vessel in the river. Tonnage on the way, 00,040; in port and in the river, 20.C2L WOOL The home situation Is lifeless. The Boston market continues -unsettled and In favor of the buyers. Increase In the volume of business is reported but the prices are not satisfactory. There is still considerable pressure to liquidate, though it Is not so pronounced as It was in the middle of February. The present price of wool has unquestionably stimulated an Increased consumption, and quite possibly will continue to do so. There is a slight rift in the clouds which have hung over the woolen goods situa tion. There is said to be an improving demand for the better class of men's woolens, for goods which come nearer be ing all wool, which will, It Is believed, lend to Increase the consumption of wool and to decrease that of cotton among woolen mills. The spirit of conservatism, however, still characterizes the entire situation, from the retail clothier to the wool merchant. Abroad the situation is unchanged. In New York the Inquiry for wool is more frequent and a good many offers are being made. These, however, are considerably below asking prices and "where sales are accomplished It Is usually at or near buyers' prices. There seems to "be an Increasing opinion, however, even among those who have been radical bears on the situation that prices will show but little- decline from the present level. This lias been said for a good many months and prices have continued to recede. There has been more or less buying, but dealers are not anxious to make these transactions public, as they are, as a rule, below the level of the market. Where a manufacturer wants a line of wool he Is willing to pay asking prices, but where It is bought because it is be lieved to be cheap, It is below the Ideas of holders. Mohair is exceedingly dull In the local markets with prospects for lower prices later in the season. SALMON The most Important feature In connection with the New York market was the announcement on March 1 by the agents representing the Pacific Steam Whaling Company that their price of 95c on red fish, 5c on medium red, and 70c on pink salmon, 1901 Alaska pack, had been withdrawn, in consequence of sales against the probable pack being up to the limit. The agents of the Alaska Packers Association reported heavy 'orders as hav ing been placed with them in New York at the opening price, and It Is understood that the price may be withdrawn any day. In this connection it is stated that the agents of -other Independent Alaska sal mon packers are still prepared to do busi ness on the 95c basis. Buying Is reported in some quarters to nave been very jeavy In New York, and that a consid erable portion of the wants of Jobbers here have heen supplied so far as Alaska salmon Is concerned. It Is reported, how ever, that intimations made to large job bers here by an Independent interest that a price of 92&C for red Alaska will be made later on, has been the means of a few large jobbers placing orders for a smaller portion of their prospective re quirements than usual, in the expectation of being able to get in on the lower price. PROVISIONS The volume of business was lighter than In the previous week. Offerings were not large. Brisk trade was done Jn lard. Early in the week prices moved up a little, but the advance was lost at the close. Trade was fair In dry salted meats, with supplies larger and holders firmer. Hams were in fair Hemand at unchanged prices. With hogs 75 cents higher than a year ago and hams 51c, an advance may be expected at al most any time. Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and. Louisville & Nashville were also very strong. The later movement of the mar ket had some appearance of manipulation for the purpose of sustaining the marxet, while profit taking was In progress else where. The reactionary movement took a point or more from the best prices of many stocks. There was a long list of stocks of smaller railroads which were moved up all the way from a point to 2.' Long Island rose 8 on light trans actions and closed with a net gain of G&. Among the Industrials, Amalgamated Copper and Sugar claimed the largest share of attention. The former opened down 1 on reports vof a renewal of an tagonistic measures in Montana. It was strongly supported, and rallied 254 at one time, but in the late dealings It broke below 101 and was closed with a net loss of 214. Sugar was forced under last night's- price for only a brief period, and after varied fluctuations closed with a net gain of 1. The steel stocks continued much neglected and heavy In tone. McKlnnon & Co., members of the Chicago Board of Trade: NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Heavy Bnylnpr of Dnrllnston ny the Rig" Sstem. ' NEW YORK, March C. The character of today's stock market was very similar to that of yesterday. 'Absorption of rail road stocks of a high grade by buyers of abundant resources .and of a substantial kind went on sldeby side with wide fluctuations in somoof the highly spec dilative specialties. So far as the rail road department -was- concerned, activity was shifted to some , extent from those stocks which were most prominent yes terday. A notable "feature "6f the "mrfrket was that it did not really respond with unanimity at any tjme fo .the . strength shown by individual stocks. In those stocks which did advance, the strength was not simultaneous. Apparently th'e demand for one stock would be largely satisfied before the buying was taken up in another. During the latter part of the day there was abundant evidence of large profit taking. Stocks, which had been strong early In the day fell back material ly and many usually prominent stocks which were not notably active today, were allowed to fall back below last night's level. Nevertheless the day's gains are very striking, both by reason of the character of the stocks affected and the amount of transactions and the extent of the gains in them. Yesterday's late movement in Burlington was continued at the outset this morning and the stock was carried up 2 to 150. a record price.
