VALUE OF MOTHER'S MEETINGS
Contention Thnt They Are a Help to
"Women.
VANCOUVER, Wash., Feb. 24. (To the
Edlton) In Wednesday's :ssue of The Or
egonian I noticed a piece entitled, "A
Mother's Place," written by "A Mother."
My opinion, as a mother, is different; as
I do not think mothers are always respon
sible for the evil deeds of their sons. Is
it not possible that the fathers are some
times responsible for the candidate for the
rum shops? Or Is the texture of their
morality so perfect as to be beyond cen.
sure? Many mothers do not know how
to meet and counteract all the tempta
tions with which their children come In
contact, especially In large cities. Hence
it is essential that she should not always
"stay at home"; but realize the fact that
"experience is a good teacner," and get
out to these good mothers' meetings and
derive all the benefit possible from the
"ways and means" of others. We should
not be so narrow-minded as to think we
cannot profit by the dear experiences of
others: I "am the mother of three chil
dren, two cf them living and grown daugh
ters. I have attended mothers' meetings
and was always benefited by them. My
children were not on the streets "learning
evil"; neithsr were they neglected In the
least "
I have always been a busy mother, yet
have found time for other things besides
Tearing my children; such as visiting the
eick, helping the needy, and attending
temperance meetings. How much docs
the average woman know, even of the ele
mentary evils of Intemperance, unless
taught by others? What a grand thin
It is for mothers to have the privilege of
attending such meetings and lectures!
and take their children with them. Then
ehe shows her faith by her work;. "Faith
without works is dead, being alone." If
this mother has made such a grand suc
cess In "raising" her children, she should
by all means attend mothers' meetings,,
that other anxious ones may profit by her
experience She also states that the be
ginning should be at the cradle. The
study of scientific temperance shows
plainly that we should begin before that,
for many are made drunkards before
reaching the cradle.
Mothers, wives, do not always stay at
home. f ' W. C. T. UV
Hop Freight Itntc Higher.
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 26. On and
after April 1 the price of transporting
hops from all Pacific Coast points to East
ern markets will be raised.. Some time
ago an emergency rate was made of $1 50
per 100 pounds from the Pacific Coast! to
all Eastern cities on account of the prev
alent low price of the product. Since then
hops have raised In price, and the bid
rate of $2 per 100 pounds Will be estab
lished. This return to the old rate liiu
been adopted by all railroads doing Pacific
Coast business.
The maximum carload of dried fruit Avlll
on and after April 1 be 30,000 pounds. ,The
same rule goes Into effect in regard -to
canned goods. In the past the carload
rate was 12,000 pounds.

Asralnst Inviting the President.
CHATTANOOGA. Tehn.. Feb. 26. Tur
ney Camp, Confederate Veterans, of Win
chester, Tenn., has adopted another reso
lution against inviting the President to
attend the Memphis reunion. They op
pose such an invitation on the ground
that "it Is contrary to the spirit of the
constitution and 'laws of the association,
and tends to change the character and
defeat the purpose of the organization,
which was Intended to be a purely and
exclusively Confederate organization for
Confederate veterans alone."
