THE MORXIXG OREGONIAN, -SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1901. LETTER FROM PAT CROWE BAYS life WILL SURRENDER, BUT IS NOT GUIITY. He Would Have Given Himself Up Long: Apo, lint He Feared Mob Violence Another Suspect. OMAHA, Neb., Feb. 22. Pat Crowe has been heard from under circumstances which Indicate that he Is soon to make his public appearance. E. A. Cudahy Is In receipt of a letter bearing: Crowe's sig nature. The handwriting has been tested by comparison and It 16 the opinion of the Plnkertons, Chief Donahue and others that the signature Is genuine. The letter ts dated South Omaha, February 15, but the envelope Indicates that it was mailed In Omaha. Owing ,to the fact that the letter Is now In the Plnkerton office. Chicago, and that no copy was retained here, Mr. Cudahy Is unable to repeat it verbatim. Mr. Cudahy and Chief Donahue have made Us contents known, however. Crowe ex plains In the letter that he has heard that the Omaha police are looking for him md believe him to be one of the kid napers of Edward Cudahy, Jr. He main tains th'at he Is innocent and eays that he has no knowledge of the affair, "With the exception of what he has read in the newspapers. He says that he will drop Into Omaha some day and prove himself Irnocent and that he would have done so long ago had he not Wen afraid that he might suffer the fate of the negro who was lynched at Leavenworth. Crowe says that the Omaha people must have cooled off considerably by this time and ex presses the opinion that he will soon be able to come here with safety. He makes tin appeal to the Chief of Police and Mr. Cudahy for protection and says that he will expect them to stand between him and violence. In conclusion he says that he Is much hurt to think that Mr. Cud ahy suspects him of being guilty of the kidnaping, and expresses his appreciation of the kindness Mr. Cudahy has shown him in-the past. "When I received this letter," Mr. Cud--ahy explained. "I was determined not to take too much for granted, so I sent It to Chicago, as I knew Mr. Plnkerton had samples of Crowe's writing and would be able to identify it without difficulty. A Tew days later I heard from Mr. Plnker ton. He said he had compared the writ ing with a sample of Crowe's chlrography and that they were the same beyond ques tion. I would not be surprised -now If Crowe should show himself almost anj time. I believe the letter was written In good faith. I don't think the letter was .written In either Omaha or South Omaha. It bore the date line 'South Omaha. Neb., Feb. 15.' But the postmark on the en velop showed that It had been mailed In Omaha. It was probably written some distance from here and sent In a eepa ate enyelop to some friend In Omaha or South Omaha, who mailed It. This was done for the obvious purpose of keeping his whereabouts a secret. He evidently wants to come In voluntarily, without giving detectives the honor of having japtured hlm." ANOTHER SUSPECT. An Omalin Snloon-lvecpcr Arrested Ic Kansas GIty. KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 22. Rhody Redmond an Omaha saloon-keeper, whose place in that city Is 6ald to have been frequented by James Callahan before the latter' was arrested for tjomplicity in the Cudahy kidnaping, was arrested here to day. Redmond Is said to have talked knowingly of the kidnaping and to have bragged that he closed his place Immedi ately after Callahan was arrested. Redmond, who was armed, has been in Kansas City "Tor several days. Chief of Police Hays subjected the prisoner to a "sweating." and then .had .a talk with Chief Donahue, of Omaha, oVcr the long distance telephone- 'Chief Donahue re quested that the prisoner be released -on his promise to report at Omaha tomorrow. This was done, and Redmond says he will go to Omaha immediately. Alex Rlckette, of Argentine, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City, was arrested with Redmond, but no charge could be placed against him and " he was released. ITALIAN VEXDETTA. Chicago Murder the Result of a Care fully Arranged Piot. CHICAGO, Feb. 22. Further investi gation of Che death of Salvatore Giovanni, who -was found murdered on Grand av enue last evening, has convinced the po lice that the murder was the result of a carefully arranged plot, carried out "under the orders of the secret Italian society. The theory of the police is that Giovanni was murdered to prevent his appearance on a murder trial In New York. Letters found In the murdered man's pocket showed that he had been summoned East for this purpose. The Mafia Society is mentioned in the case, but as yet Ihe police have no evidence directly Inplicat ing that society with the murder. Jos eph Morlco, one of the men 'arrested last night and who was found to have a se vere bullet wound In the month, is believ ed to have done the killing. Carlo Bat tasto, who came to Chicago from New York last Friday and who spent much of his time In the company of Giovanni, is also under arrest. A clue to the reason for the murder vas found amonc- thn Wt-ors fn c:invnnirfc pockets. One of these letters, written by a man in St. Louis, spoke of a murder committed on Mulberry street, New York, to which "Giovanni was a witness. It also developed during the day that Giovanni was a member of several .societies and has many enemies. In connection with the murder the saloon or Frank Mlrici, at 57 Grand avenue was raided by the police today and the proprietor and 10 Inmates were placed under arrest. Recorder James, of Baker County, while searching the old records of the office, discov ered a land patent to Nelson Gardner, signed by President U. S. Grant.
