THE MORNING. OHEGONIAN, SATURDAY. FEBRUARY 9, 1901. 11 COMMERCIAL AND The -wheat market Is still drifting down ward, and this continues to have some effect on general trade, but so much of the crop has been moved that the de pression is not as marked as It would have been earlier In the season, before the bulk of It had been moved. In other lines of produce there was but little change yesterday, although eggs continue very weak- San Francisco Is offering eggs here at 21c net. and the fresh East ern stock can be laid down here at 20c per dozen. Butter Is steady. Some very fine vegetables were received by rail from California yesterday, and green peas sold at lO&llc, which Is quite reasonable for the season of the year. California toma toes are selling at $2 per crate of four baskets. The quality Is excellent. Po ta 3cs do not Improve, and most of the buyers have temporarily withdrawn from the market. Poultry is moving at good prices. Bank Clearlncs. Exah antes. Balances. Portland J847.0SO $45,294 Seattle . 288,082 01,045 Spokane 118.990 17.194 Tacoma 208,673 83,018 rORTLAXD MARKETS. Grata, Floor, Etc. The only change in the wheat market yesterday was a. further sinking toward a lower level of prices. Locally, buyers are unable to secure anything at any where near actual values, and the busi ness In consequence is at a standstill. Walla "Walla could still be worked at 54c, and possibly 54c but there Is so little dong that quotations are to a large extent nominal, and anything like a free selling movement would certainly fcrce prices down. McKlnnon & Ce. says: Liverpool was )8c lower. The de c ne there Is said to have been mainly caused by the reselling of wheat bought there for American account yesterday. The Continent was again accepting offers from nearly all markets, and this is the third day that they have shown a better disposition to buy wheat. Primary re ce.pts are new on the whole running about the same as last year, but we de sire to keep It in mind that during the balance of the month they are quite like- FINANCIAL NEWS ly to run below last year. Local condi tions are not unfavorable to better prices, inasmuch as there is a considerable local short interest. Minneapolis reports de mand for flour very poor, with probabil ity of some of the mills closing down "at the end of the week unless the demand Improves. Argentine shipments were 1,300,000, against 922,600 last year. SEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Considerable Falling; Oft In the Vol ume of Dealings. NEW YORK, Feb. 8. There was a con siderable falling off in the volume of deal ings In stocks today, and the decline would have been much more marked, had It not been for the bringing forward Into activity of a horde of low-priced stocks of the class denominated among the brokers as "cats and dogs." It Is char acteristic of a long bull movement that It should eventually reach Into the dogs of the list and stir up the sentiment of the market. The theory is that the gen erally higher rate of values attained in the general market, entitles the low priced stocks to some Increase In valua tion even without special development In the affairs of the property. The bidding up of these stocks is also a favorite de vice by bull operators to sustain the market for the purpose of realizing In the higher priced stocks, which have already enjoyed their advance. So far as the rail road department of the stock market was concerned, this was clearly what was go ing on today. As a matter of fact, combination rumors were circulated regarding the railroads whose stocks are selling below 40, as has become the fashion in connection with bull movements, but some of the stocks were bid up without specific rumors on the gen eral principle that any railroad Is avail able for a combination nowadays. The most clearly defined rumors applied to the Wabash securities and the group of rail roads operating In Colorado. These made Wabash a connecting link to be absorbed by Lackawanna and to take in the Gould Southwestern railroads In the formation of a new through railroad system from the East to the Southwestern Gulf ports. The rumor of a project of the consolida tion of the several railroad lines took on various forms, some of which were au thoritatively denied. The gains In this class of railroad stocks ran all the way from 1 to 5 points. St. Joseph and Grand Island first gaining 5 and Wabash com mon 4. All of the securities of both roads were affected In a less degree, and there were gains besides In the Colorado and Southern stocks, Denver & Rio Grande, Fort Worth & Rio Grande, the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville stocks, Peoria & Eastern, Texas & Pacific, North America, Kanawha & Michigan and Michi gan Central. The rest of the railroad list was singu larly sluggish all day, and there was only a handful of stocks that got as much as a point away from last night at any time. Union Pacific was never more than 1 above last night, and was at one -time 1 below. The fluctuations were hesitating at all times. The only news of the day concerning the stock was the underwrit ing at par of a bond issue to finance the Southern Pacific purchase. The latter stock also showed some strength. The steel stocks made a great show of strength Just at the opening. Tin Plate jumped, nearly 3 points, Steel & Wire 2U, and Fed eral Steel only 1. None of the advances were fully maintained, except Federal Steel, and business in the group fell to comparatively small proportions. The belief continued strong In Wall street that the plan for adjustment of con trol of the steel properties is making progress. But the stocks did not reflect clearly any news. Sugar had an advance of 3K- The movement of cash from the In terior is expected to be sufficient to off set a loss of over $1,000,000 to the Sub Treasury on accountr-of the heavy "cus toms payment. There have apparently been large special movements of funds from nearby cities and from San Fran cisco, although New York exchange at Chicago had declined to 30 cents discount. Nobody ventures an estimate of what the loan item will disclose. In view of the large financial transactions, which have occurred during the week. There was a continuance of activity In the bond market today, but there were reactions on profit taking at some points. Wabash debentures "B" advanced 6 points, and the "A" 2Ya. Total sales, par value, $8,400,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. BONDS. 17. Foreign Financial News. NEW YORK, Feb. 8. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial telegram says: Though business on the stock exchange here was limited today, the tone In the general list was steady. American stocks were an excoptlon. Their movements wero very erratic Prices at the opening were depressed and In the first hour there was free soiling all around. Thin the mar ket found its feet, and Union and South. ern Pacific Issues were bid up sharply, steadying the list. New York prices as they came on the cable caused a violent see-saw toward the end and the close was Irregular, Southern Pacifies being strong, Union Pacifies flat, the Denver is sues buoyant and the rest of the market sagging.
