Table on Subject.
WASHINGTON. Jan. 3L The record
made by the manufacturers of the United
States ronns the most striking feature
of the history of our foreign commerce
during, the period of 1E9O-1SO0. The Treas
ury Bureau of Statistics has Just com
pleter Its analysis of the record of our
foreign commerce during the calendar
year 1S00. and a comparison of the figures
thus presented with these of 1590 and
the intervening years discloses some in
teresting facts. It shows a remarkable
Increase In the importation of manufac
turers materials, and an even greater
Increase in the exportation of manufac
tured geeus. while In the importation of
manufactures there is a decided decrease,
showing that the manufacturers have not
cy increased their exportations, but also
increased the share which they are sup
plying of the manufactures consumed In
the United States. The importations of
foodstuffs have decreased, while the ex
pectations of foodstuffs have materially
Increased, showing that the agricultural
producers have not only Increased their
exportations, but have only increased the
chare "which they supply of the agricul
tural products consumed In the United
States.
livld;ng the importations into three
great clastos flrst, foodstuffs and live ani
mac, second, manufactures and luxuries;
arid, third, manufacturers', materials it
is ''rand that foodstuffs and live animals,
which In 18W formed 31.5 per cent of the
total imports, were only 26.4 per cent of
the Imports of 1300; manufactures and
luxuries, which formed 34 per cent of the
Imports of 1S99, formed but 29.5 per cent
In 1900 while manufacturers materials,
which formed but 34.3 per cent of the
total imports of 1S90, formed 44 per cent
of the total imports in 1900. On the export
sl3e, agricultural products, which formed
74.3 per cent of the total domestic ex
portations of 1890, formed only 62.2 per
cent of the total in 1900; while manufac
tures, which formed but 1S.5 per cent
of the total domestic exports in 1S90,
formed 30j4 per cent in 1000.
Turning the actual figures of Imports
and exports by great groups, it may
be said that the importation of manufac
turers' materials amounted in 1SS0 to
5282,839,034, and in 1900 to $3G5,1,600; or an
average of 51,000,000 per day; while the
exportation of manufactures, which
amounted In 1890 to 5157,126,803, was. In
1900, 5141,406,942. The importation of food
arid live animals decreased from 5259,820,
704 In 1S90 to 5219,329,205 In 1900, while the
exportation t)f agricultural products in
creased from 5628,779,597 in 1S90 to 5904,
658,958 in 1900. The importation of food
and live animals shows a decrease of 15
per cent In 1900 as compared with 1890,
while the exportation of agricjltural
products shows an Increase of 44 per cent
during the same time. Imports of manu
factures and luxuries show a decrease
of 13 per cent in 1900 as compared with
1!90, while imports of manufacturers' ma

FIGHT AGAINST TONGUE.
River and Harbor BUI Started It
Tones' Move in Matter.
WASHINGTON. Jan. 24. Whatever else
may have been accomplished by the river
and harbor bill, it certainly served to set
at variance the Washington and Oregon
delegations, and- to start an active fight
against Representative Tongue. It has
been known for some time that Represen
tative Jones, of Washington, had his eye
on the river and harbor committee, but
since the House has passed the bill, he
has redoubled his efforts, and has been
actively canvassing the matter and ob
taining hedges of support from members
-of other Pacific Coast States. He will,
of course, be supported by his colleague,
and, it is understood, has the promlee of
several members of the California dele
gation, who also feel that their state has
been slighted. However, if the facts are
kr.jwn, there is more than one Represen
tative from the State of California who
aspires to a place on the river and har
bor committee, and that fact wlH mili
tate again Mr. Jones In his campaign. It
is not likely that he could replace Mr.
Tongue on the committee. It would be a
hard matter for any other Pacific Coast
member to secure this place in the next
Congress. Even If there was a vacancy,
Ihe fact that Oregon has a member ' on
the committee will operate very force
Xy against allowing the adjoining: State
of Washington to also have representa
tion, and unless there Is a very radical
change in the situation in the House and
in the .committee, it is difficult to see just
where Mr. Jones Is going to slip Into the
committee on rivers and harbors of the
Fifty-seventh Congress.
