THE MOENING OKEGOKIAN, SATUKDAY, JANUARY. 26, 1901. WILL BUILD GRIST MILL MAXUFAGTORERS SELECT A AT. FJURVIEW. SITE Product of the Plnnt Would Find a Ready Market In -Eastern Part of Cannty. Portland manufacturers, who have been investigating conditions at Fairview. fpr the purpose of building a flourmill, hav secured a site on the O. R, & N.. a short distance west of the Fairview depot. It Is proposed to start a 310,OX) grist mlH which will be operated by steam- It has been found that the water power on the Smith estate is not sufficient to operate the xnllL This is the report of A. G. Bachrodt, the mill expert, who made the examination. The location on the main line will do away with the necessity of constructing a spur from the O. R. & N. The promotors of the mill enterprise will meet with the people of the Fairview neighborhood Tuesday afternoon and make an ofter, which if accepted wlM mean that the mill will be built and put In operation at once. Hundreds of cars of flour and feed re received yearly at Fairview for shipment to Gresham, Pleasant Home and other points In East ern Muitnemab, some distance from the railway, and it Is considered certain a .xnlll at Fairview could readily dispose cf all its output. Mon ta villa Votes 27 Mills. The taxpayers of Montayllia school district voted a levy of 27 mills Thurs day evening. Chairman Sehwabauer pre siaed. The clerk's report showed the finances of the district to be in excel lent coniution. There is no floating debt Receipt for the year were $5SSS 85; dis bursements, $5129 28; balance on hand, J697 57. At first the meeting voted a levy of 23 mills, but the directors invited tha taxpayers to inspect the school build ing and see for themselves what Improve ments were needed. The rooms were Inspected. After the meeting had been called to order again it was moved and carried that 4 mine more be levied, thus making the total levy 27 mills. It was explained mat the Qreenleaf assessment was so low that a large levy was nec essary. The probability of annexation to Portland was discussed, and It was decided not to permit any debts to ac cumulate, but to be honest and pay off the obligations. The necessity of an addition to the schoolhouee was consid ered. The present building contains eight rooms, and these are filled, the enrollment being 47. Two rooms will have to be built within two years to accommodate the" Increased attendance. The district has a bonded indebtedness of 512,000, of which 58000 bears 6 per cent Interest, and about J4000 7 per cent- The 7 per cent bonds will be due in two years, and will then be paid off.
