THE MORNING OKEGONIAN, THURSDAY. JANUARY 17, . 1901. COLORADO SMELTERS. TThe Trust to Absorb Guggenheim Plant. DENVER, Colo., Jan. 16. The News print the folio-wine upon the authority of a New York man, who has just ar rived In Denver: The absorption of the Guggenheim umeltlnsr plants by the American smelting trust has been ac ooxnpUahec'. Daniel Guggenheim had been named as ohalrman of the board of di rectors, with headquarters In New York, and extensive changes In methods of car rying on the work of the gigantic con cern "will be announced at an early day. The Guggenheim are given So per cent of the stock of the company, the total capitalization being X100.000.000. Accord ing to the plans which ore known to principal men In the consolidated cor poration, the financial magnates who are handling the negotiations have agreed that E. W. Nash, of Omaha, Is to continue as president of the company, and ex-Governor J. 3. Grant, of this elty. Is to con tinue chief of the operating: board. Among the changes decided upon Is the abolishment of the gnnera.1 managers of the different plants. Up to the present time nearly every one of the plants has had a general manager at a salary rang ing at from $15,000 toJ25.0M a year. These offices are to be wiped out and each smelter Is to have a superintendent, who Is to report to the Denver headquarters, In charge of ex-Governor Grant. The abolishment of the offices of gen eral manager will effect a saving, It Is said, of $200,000 to $300,000 a year, and oth er decapitations, which are to follow as circumstances permit, will enable the cor poration to save not less than $500,000 a year In salaries alone. This la eaid to be one of the conditions Insisted upon by the Guggenhelms before they would agree to pool their Interests with the big com bine. Warrovr Escape From Death.
