THE MORNING OREGONIA, FRIDAY, 'JANUARY 4, 1901. EVERY DAY ETHICS. For TJae." on Street, in" Philanthropy and In Boardlng-Houses. PORTLAND. Jan. L (To the Editors- like to be a reformer and hope tnat you will not say of me ar -was said in refer- nnM tn nne fnnrt nf Arltlolfilne. "I do not like too many Christopher Columbuses." As I plodded through the snow rms morning, when several -courteous gentle men had, one after another, stepped aside to give me the one beaten track, it oc curred to me how nice It would be If, when fresh snow is on the ground, every one who was not obliged to go on the left side of the street (not sidewalk) would taka the right side thus appro priating the usual single track. Right now, while we are summing up what a century may do, I would like to make a move toward assisting a class of people who, .from my observation during a. year or two past, are evidently forgot ten in one particular. The class referred to -ttre those respectable people who have permanent employment in the care of large benevolent Institutions. The special need that has attracted my attention Is no doubt a natural result of the prover bial ruth and push of the day. This push cannot, apart from any other objec tion to it, produce the highest type of work. But the direct and individual In Jury is my point. Philanthropy and justice should devise a plan by which a stated time daily should be set aside for these important people to breathe heaven's air and relax their energies. Boarding my self at a very comfortable house, I am disinterested. Another matter; it concerns hygiene. How very interesting are the lengthy ar ticles we read on this subject. I would Ilka to enter my thought on one particu lar branch, my former thoughts -on the subject being strengthened by the quiet I find in this same boarding-house. A habit of quiet movement, day or night (especially the latter), very much assists the world, through rest to the nerves other people's nerves. "What is the need for tossing down boots, coming into a house as though there was no chance that some one might be needing quiet; sudden wheeling up or down of window BhadeB, or any noise which comes from forgetting the good Of others. Why not do things quietly? Perhaps it may not be taken as offen sive, but as evidencing a desire to help the good of the coming century. If I sign myself A REFORMER. . . t Oregon Mine Notes. L. D. Lively, of Lostine, has returned from a trip to the Imnaha mining dis trict, situated on the left bank of the Imnaha and Snake Rivers, in Oregon, says the Leader.- He believes that within a very short time the great merits of that setLon, as a mining belt, will be fully scognlzed. The amount of work done p to three months ago consisted in the main of assessment work, but recently a ccmrHny was organized on a group of claims by financiers of Minneapolis and Spokane, and a full force of men Is now at work driving three tunnels. The ore carries copper, gold and sliver. Values arc high in copper, and In every Instance ledges grow larger and ore richer with depth Much work is now being done by individual owners of claims, with highly encouraging results In every instance. At a stockholders' meeting of the Lib erty Bell Consolidated Mines Company, at Sumpter. the following officers and direc tors were elected for the ensuing year: President, Claude C. Basche, manager of the Basche Hardware Company; vice-president. Nat Cooper, manager B. Basche & Co., mining supply com pany; secretary. Joseph G. Hunt, treas urer Basche Hardware Company; treas urer. Roy H. Miller, cashier First Bank of Sumpter; general . manager, Paul E. Po.ndexter, mine operator. Directors: C. C Basche, Nat Cooper, P. E. Poindexter, Robert W. Henry, Joseph G. Hunt, G. H. "W ilson and 'J. Clifford Bowen. The prop erties ofvthe company include thfcj Levia than, -Tattle Gertrude; Hardware and B. &- B quartz mining claims, situated in the Alamo division of the Red Boy dis trict.
