SEVERAL -MINES.
Helena Ifo. 1 a Bit Dividend Parer
The'Helena Mlninc Company'
Fine Saorrixiff.
The group of claims comprising the
property owned by the Helena Mining
Company, Is located on the east slope ot
Grizxley Mountain and extends down to
what is known as "Horse Heaven" Creek.
The property was located on June 26, 1KS6,
by .Mr. Charles B. Bruneau, a man of vast
experience and wide reputation as a pros
pector and miner, but like the great ma
jority of hardy mountaineers who un
ceasingly search after the hidden for
tunes which Nature so reluctantly gives
up, .had but very limited means wltn
which to actively develop the property,
which he believed from the start would
some day become a great mine.
It, therefore, remained for the. Jennings
brothers, P. J., R. J. and J. J., men who
had grown up In the mining business and
who are known the entire length of the
Pacific Coast, from Alaska to Mexico, as
the most successful of mine operators and
skilled, managers, to take up the work
already begun by Mr. Bruneau, and by
their general knowledge and financial aid
develop the prospect Into the wonderful
mine which today shines as the achleve-
dubbed by the old prospectors and min
ers ot the district, from the fact that
the mine has been la continuous opera
tion for years, while the owners were
without means to develop the mine on a
large scale. Necessity required that it be
run. on. a very conservative basis, devel
opment work and improvements being
done only as the gold was taken
from "the mine, and it is one 'of
the teif mines that has paid from the"
grasS 'ro6ts. The Thine was discovered
and 'located In 1891 by James A. Muslck
for "Himself and A. E. Uavis, of Los An
geles, Cat in 3S92 J W. Cook, E. Al
Forrester and S. M. Perry, of Los An
geles, Cat, and O. E. Brady, became
Interested in the property, and a five
stamp 'mill was erected In that year. A
16-stamp mill was purchased from Frash
cr Chalmers, Chicago, and erected -In
1S9S-99. The mine has produced about
$760,000 In goTd -since 1S92.' v
The development of the mine consists
of six levels, being run on -the Muslck
ledge, as per the general section of the
Mustek mine, of about 4000 feet, tunnels
and drifts.
The course of the ledse at different
points varies froni north about 40 de
grees to 80 west, and lies almost perpen
dicular. Is somewhat irregular in width,
rarifHnir from 1 foot to IS feet between
walls, and has numerous branches. The
ledges are made up of three parallel
veins, as was best shown upon level No.
S, where the ledge wa3 12 feet between
waljs. Oxydlzation extends to a depth
of about 100 to 150 feet, although there
Is small percentage of sulphides above
that depth. Below the depth of 150 feet
the ore changes and becomes richer In
pyrites, lead, ,copper and sulphides. On
has been started, and it is tiie intention
of the company to push this drift on the
ledge to treat depth, as from numerous
shafts sunk on the ledge on the surface
e,very indication is that large bodies' of
free-milling Ore, will be opened up.

Another Promising Property, Lo
cated About One Mile From the
Famous Helena Mine.
The Mayflower Mining Company Is the
owner ot nine Quartz claims located on
Horse Heaven Creek, about one mile
southeast of the famous Helena. The
Yreka la the best developed of the differ
ent claims owned by this company, having
one tunnel of 165" feet directly on the vein,
the end; of the drift being about SO leet
from the surface. This drift shows a vein
eight feet wide with an average -assay "of
$40 per ton of gofd and copper with a
small per cent of silver and lead. The
Nightingale and Ely-Pearson, two other
veins, are fairly "well developed, showing
good ore. The company owns nine claims
and six different veins, all adjoining each
Other with side lines. The company is
not in debt one dollar and has expended
almost $5000 on the property. "W. P. Ely,
of Kelso, is the manager, and some of the
best citizens of Cowlitz Cc-unty are associ
ated with him, and the Spring will witness
the erection of a plant on the property.
The location Is a most desirable one, as
there Is plenty of wood and water;

ment of these men's energy and perse
verance. From the outset, active and honest de
velopment was the policy of the owners,
and as depth was attained a marked in
crease was manifested in both the width
and value of the ore encountered, until
at a depth of 100 feet ore of such richness
was uncoered that Iree gold could,
"Without difficulty, be Tseen by the naked
eye. Still more extensUe exploration
was followed along the "3000 feet: of the
He na ledge, until at the present time
tho property has 1000 feet of tunnels be
sides rumerous upraises aggregating
about 300 feet In which a large force or
men are working night and day. Already,
the mine has over $500,000 worth of ore
blocked out ready for extraotlon, besides
haing produced nearly $100,000 from the
ore taken out in developing the tunnels
and upraises.
6f the more recent work done, mention
might be made of that in what Is known
as tunnel No 2, where a 7-foot ledge of
base ore has been opened up, two feet of
which aerages $300 per ton, after deduct
ing all transportation and treatment
charges, the balance of the ledge running
better than $30 per ton.
Until within the last year the property
had been worked without the aid of a
mill with which to treat the ore, but It
was apparent that this necessity would
have to be Immediately supplied. Exca
vating was begun late in the Fall of 1S99,
but the mill (which is one of the best
free-gold mills manufactured, known as
the, latest improved 10-stamp Hammond-"Self-Supporting
Iron Frame, made by the
Hammond Mfg. Co , of this city,) was not
completed until April 1, 1900, when the
stamps first began dropping and the ca
pacity -of the mill has been pushed to Us
utmastslnce that time.
At present the mine is producing about
$20,000 per month, $5000 of which is dis
bursed in the monthlv dhldend. the bal
ance being used Jointly in extending de
velopment and In building up a treasury
reserve. "When the company begins treat
ing the rich ore It Is the intention to in
crease the dhldends.
Besides the 10-stamp mill already men
tioned the company has erected timber
houses, ore houses, blacksmith shop, as
say office, superintendent's office, the best
hotel in the camp, capable of accom
modating 75 men with ample prols!ons
and fuel for the next eight months, to
gether with all necessary appurtenances
for carrying on work throughout the en
tire year.
The officers of the company are: P. J.
Jennings, president; Charles B. Breneau,
vice-president; R. J. Jennings, secretary
and treasurer: J. J. Jennings, superin
tendent, and David Goodsell, attorney.
The company's main office ia No. 112
Sherlock Building, Portland, Oregon.
Helena o. 2.
The property owned by the Helena Min
ing Company No. 2 consists of a group of
claims located on the opposite, or west
side, of Grirrley Mountain from the Hel
ena, and Is a direct extension of this
latter property.
Only a sufficient amount of work to de
termine the value and -character of the
ore in the No. 2 companj's property had
been done to within the past few months,
when the management began the same
active deelopment of this property -which
they had so successfully carried out on
the Helena,, and. with equally as good, if
not better, results than those obtained on
Helena at the same stage of develop
ment. This group Is opened up by numerous
open cuts together with three tunnels of
100 feet, 125 feet and 150 feet respective
ly, the last 30 feet of the latter showing
seven feet of ore, carrying values of be
tween $50 and $60 per ton.
It is the policy of the company to de
velop lta property as rapidly as possible
by driving these three and other tunnels,
and it Is the belief of the management
that by early Summer the company will
"be Justified In erectinjr a mill with -which
to treat the ore. This in addition to tho
substantial buildings already erected.
The personnel of the directors in this
company is the same as that of the Helena.
THE MCSICK MINE.
and
Has Been Operated for Tears
Paid Handsome Dividends.
Near the central part of the Bohemia
mining district, at the head of City
Creek, lying between Bohemia and Fair
view Peaks, the highest mountains In
the district, is located the Muslck mine,
"the old stand-by," as the site has been
level No. 6 the ore is rich in galena,
and. In -the west part of the drift is
principally galena with quartz and sul
phides, and contains no free sold to
speak of. Some portions of the vein is
principally quartz and others pyrites At
one point sphalerite is abundant, and con
stitutes the greater portion of the ledge.
The 'ores carrying the most lead go as
high as 40 to 50 per cent. This is de
sirable, as a smelter will undoubtedly
be located in the camp ere long. Recent
developments In level No 6 show a ledge
six feet wide, running high in lead, two
feet of it, and carrying pyrites, copper
and sulphides, values running to $160 per
ton.x The group consists of Defiance, Cali
fornia, "White Guests, Mystery, Alpha
retta, Los Angeles and Ajax, in Douglas
County, and the Butter, June, Idaho,
Hazel, Yukon and Halifax, in Lane
County. In prospecting with cuts, tun
nels and shafts, the California ledge has
been traced for over 3000 feet, showing
free gold in many places, and with every
evidence, when opened up, of making as
good a producer as thfe famous Muslck
ledge. So confident of the future are the
owners that they ha,ve about completed
arrangements for the development of the
mine on a more extensive basis than has
ever been done in the past.
A drift on level with oro bin in Mill
property of the Muslck Mining Co , is
another valuable piece of property recent
ly acquire by the Jennings brothers,
they naving' secured from the owners a
bond on same
At "present the property Is equipped
with a ten-stamp mill, tramwajs, ore
houses, assay office, blacksmith shop,
boarding-house, with sleeping apartments
in connection, together with other Im
provements incidental to the successful
operation of a property of like magni
tude The mine being under the same able
management as Helena and Helena No.
2, it is an assured fact that the same
skill and energy which has characterized
their operations in the past will be ex
tended to the utmost capacity In making
the Champion one of the large mines
of the district.
Already large bodies of ore are In sight
and Immediate steps are to be taken in
operating the mill and extensively devel
oping the property.
