THE MOBNING OREGONIAN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1900. THE OREGON SENATORSHIP Comment on a. Recent Interview In The Oregonlan. Selem Capital Journal. The unecuivocal manner In which Mr. Lot Pearce, one of the Marion delega tion In the Legislature, declares for Mr. Corbett for Senator, is a handsome trib ute from one of the younger seneration of successful business men to one of the older. From the business standpoint Mr. Corbett has much to commend him. He came to Oregon as a young man and with about S300of bis own -capital. Busi ness men of his native .state were willing to trust merchandise In his hands, and their confidence was well bestowed. In two years young Corbett cleared over $40, 000.. and returned to New England and turned one-half of it over to his backers. His reputation for commercial sagacity and enterprise was established and henceforward he had credit and standing among the best merchants of the Atlantic Coast. His first stock of goods was shoved Into an old warehouse on the river, and he had to sleep among the bales and boxes armed to the teeth to protect the property. But he accounted for every dollar of It. One of his earliest enterprises was to secure a contract to run the overland stage line, and this he successfully con ducted between Portland and San Fran cisco for many years, clearing on the whole contract 5178,000, and yet underbid ding the old contract by a large sum and giving an Improved service. Once a pe tition was circulated that would have largely increased the profits of Mr. Cor bett's then existing contract. Mr. Cor bett heard of it and promptly appeared before Congress and repudiated the whole matter, refusing to receive the benefit of any doubtful methods. Mr. Corbetl's more recent enterprises, such as bulldlnc o( the Portland Hotel, and other large buildings at his home city, his career as a banker and his hearty backing of commercial Interests and en terprises all over the state are well known. Mr. Corbet has amassed a largo fortune, but no one can point out where he has made money by dishonorable methods, has robbed any one. or has had the benellt of legislation or government favors. His success has been great, but no one can say that it might not have beon much greater, J.f Mr -Corbett had subordinated all to money-making. Money of late years has not been an object of his life. His liberal bestowals of his means to worthy objects proves him to be a man who does not live for self alone, and In this respect he has shown a pro gressive spirit, and set an example to men of wealth that cannot but have a good Influence. Mr. Pearce evidently believes the peo ple respect a man who has made an hon orable success in a business career, and will not listen to the cry of down with him because, he Is rich. Among the Re publican aspirants. Mr. Corbett stands alone, declaring exactly where he stands on all Important matters. He has de clared for free commercial Intercourse with our island possessions. He is op posed to a ship subsidy steal at a time when all the shipyards In America have all the contracts they can execute for years. He believes In a representative form of government for the islands in stead of a military rule, and colonial pol icy. He has dared to say his soul Is his own on these and other questions, and has reflected, as we believe, true policies for ...le masses of the people on these and other great issues. "We believe he stands for the true business interests of our great Northwest. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND. Dec 26. S P. M.
