BUILDING THE DEFENDER
HOW THE ACTUAL WORK ON THE
YACHT-WILL BE DONE.
Laj-InRT-Dovrn P roccss I Being; Pros
ecuted In n Loft Where Pry
iner Ej-es Cannot Penetrate.
Secure from the prying eyes of the pub
lic, and In the most Isolated place In the
bis boatshops In Bristol, the job of laying
down the new cup defender that Is to
meet Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock II
next August on the Sandy Hook course Is
being prosecuted with dispatch, says the
New York Times. The spot where the
laying-down process Is going on is in a
loft directly over the north boatshop,
which gives a clear floor space deftly to
ply the long battens in laying out the
work in sections, as ia the customary pro
cedure preliminary to building large .racing
yachts. It is a system of proving the
plans of the design, and if any errors are
noted they can be corrected before the
actual bending of the frames is put In
operation, which frames must conform
exactly to the lines laid down. The room
is not only adapted to such work as re
gards space, but it Is also the most Iso
lated of any of the rooms about the boat
! building establishment, giving a free hand
without interruption to a few of the older
mechanics to carry on the job without
being disturbed by any one passing in
rnd out. This Is the place where sails
were made formerly, but, owing to the
fact of the quarters bern? rather narrow
for such work, a new sail loft was con
structed near by. While there is no one
actually on guard at the door leading to
this place of secrets, there is a quiet un
derstanding among the men at work on
the lajing-down process that their ap
proach to the room is to be cautiously
made, while a messenger from the depths
below Is met promptly at the door to in
quire what Is wanted. While no rules
are In force forbidding other employes
from visiting this sanctum, because that
wculd Indicate something out of the or
dinary going on there, which would nat
urally .arouse more or less curiosity, all
persons about the premises give the room
a "wide berth," presumably having busi
ness elsewhere.
The real beginning of the work of laying
down the new yacht in section lines was
commenced in earnest early last week.
From reliable sources it Is said that this
work will be completed In the loft about
Iecember 15, In order to allow a sufficient
margin of time for beginning the con
struction of, the cup defender on the floor
of the south shop.
Mold for the Lend Keel.
The lines of the big mold to contain the
hot lead of the defender were also laid
down in the old sail loft, the job being
finished on them Friday morning. Some
of the frames for the mold are shaped.
Ip very many particulars the south boat
shop, where the defender will take shape,
today presents similar scenes to those
that were In evidence there two years ago.
Preparations were then going on in the
south shop for the contest for the Amer
ica's cup in 1899. Two years ago the.
yacht Defender, the victor over Valkyrie
in In the races sailed in 1S95, was resting
on the cradle In this shop, having part
of her aluminum tops! dee, which had be
come corroded, removed, and new plates
of the same metal put on to place the
craft in condition for a trial horse for
the Columbia during the racing season of
1899. The Rainbow, at present undergo
ing tinkering to her hull, does not take
up quite as much space In the shop a
did the Defender, the craft being 20 feet
shorter. The same activity Is being dis
played by the, riveters .and fitters on the
Rainbow as was observable on the De
fender; there is Just as mch raffle about
the floor of the shop as there was when
the champion of 1S95 was being improved,
and the rush to get the Rainbow out of
the shop Is Just as great. The Rain
bow's steel plates are fast being set up
and riveted, while in the interior of the
hull many of the temporary bracings have
been taken out.
In the Other Departments.
In the various other departments of the
boatbuilding establishment things have
Just begun to take on energetic appear
ances, denoting at once the Importance of
the work to be done In constructing a
new cup defender. The heads of these
departments have had conferences with
the -designer relative to plans In working
out the various details of construction.
In some Instances it has been decided to
have some of the work done outside of
Bristol, yet it may seem to be the policy
of the management for some time to have
all boat work concentrated in and about
the shops. It is only within a few years
that marine railways, a sail loft, and a
foundry were Introduced In Bristol. Some
of tha mall work for the Columbia is
well under way in these departments. For
Instance, in the blacksmith's shop the new
s'oop's chain plates and many strappings
have been turned out. while two large
anchors about the size the Columbia had
In use were finished the past week. In
the same shop the heavy section bending
tables upon which the new frames will
bo bent are lined up and ready for use.
In the pattern shop wood material for
molds to be used in the foundry are piled
on benches, while work has already begun
en the mold to be used in the casting for
the collision bulkhead, which is to be of
ordnance metal. Many of the heavy cast
ings are to be of Tobln bronze. The
U heavier pieces of castings will probably be
produced at a mill at Bridgeport, Conn.
It is not so sure about the sections of
keel plates being cast In the Herrshon
foundry, as on Friday It was understood
there was a dl&cuselon at the office about
th matter. For the present the question
Is held In reserve. The ternpost and
rudder stock will probably be cast at
Bridgeport.
The sallmakers are perhaps the busiest
mechanics at the boat establishment at
present Some of the head sails are com
pleted, a. mainsail has been cut, and the
work of making it has besun. The m-iln-salls
will have to be finished in sections
and put together, owing later to a scar
city of room for sails of such extent.
When the TO-footers were built this year
a number of steel-bulbed angle frames
were left, over, and now may be put to
use In the construction of the cup de
fender, but whether or not this will be
done is' not known.
Putting; the Money to Good Use.
HELENA. MonL. Dec 2-L The $30,000
that played such a conspicuous part in
the Senatorial Legislative session two
years ago, and which Is still In the State
Treasurer's vault, may be put to use by
the Legislature this week. Members of
the Montana Pan-American Commission
brieve the money could be made, availa
ble for an exhibit of Montana's resources
at the Buffalo exposition next Summer.
It Is suggested that the money be paid
Into the state treasury and an appropria
tion of $20,OW additional be made to de
fray the expenses of an exhibit.
