The British ship Rathdown sailed from Yokohama a week ahead of the Queen Margaret from Hong Kong, and Captain Logic expressed grave fears of her safety. The Rathdown Is now 81 days out from Yokohama. The San Francisco reinsurance specu lators are still quoting high rates on a number of ships which are not fully due. Out of about a dozen vessels on which they ha"vc quoted reinsurance fa San Francisco this season, but one lone ship, the Rathdown. has failed to arrive, and' even this vessel Is not a hopeless case. The Castle Rock, whloh sailed from Hong Kong two days later than the Queen Margaret, is now. -quoted at 15 per. cent reinsurance, and by the time she is fully due at Royal Roads the brokers wIJl probably have her up to 25 per cent. Chilean Whaler in Trouble. The Chilean steam whaler Fearless put Into Coos Bay, Tuesday, for provisions, water and coal, says the Coqullle Herala. The crew were in a destitute condition, having been out from Unalaska 32 days, and for many days previous to her ar rival In the bay the crew managed to llvo by eating sea gulls. The coal supplymust surely have become exhausted shortly after leaving Alaskan waters, and tht heavy winds probably carried the craft to sea, leaving her no mode of reaching a port except by the use of her few sails. Most of the crew deserted the ship at Marshflcld. The cargo was a very valuable one to the owners, as a big catch of seals was made, but as the men only share in the whale catch, they fared very poorly. They had about 000 pounds of whalebone. A native of the far north was brought down, and when he landed In Marshficld he saw the first trr-e in his life. A crew, will be picked up In Marshfleld to take the boat to San Francisco. The Fearless sailed from San Francisco about 2: months ago, and at one time fears were entertained for her safety. Steamer Leaves Tacoxnn. TACOMA, Wash.. Dec 24. Commercial and Financial News All of the stock and grain exchanges in this country and Europe were closed yesterday, r apd. accordingly there was nothing doing In the commodity which Is the principal factor In trade In this coun try. The holiday rush was still on, al though the wholesalers enjoyed a breath ing spell towards evening, leaving the re tailers to fight It out. The retail trade was the heaviest on record In this city, and If the orders from, the country are a criterion there will be no complaints from that direction. There was considerable activity in the poultry markets yester day, and the clean-up was better than' was expected. Retailers neld off until late Saturday, and some or them did not buy until yesterday morning. There was apparently enough Oregon turkeys to go round, for the Eastern were nearly all put In cold storage as roon as tney ar rived. The bulk of the best stock offer ing yesterday was sold at about 13 cents, with an occasional lot of .large birds bringing more money and some ordinary stock selling down as low as 10 cents. The warning sent out last week stopped the heavy receipts of chickens, and the market was left In gooa shape at the close of business. The San Francisco steamer arriving Saturday evening brought considerable fruit and garden truck, but It cleaned up so "well that the street was bare before noon yesterday. Bank Clearings. Exchanges.
