Sale of Flannel Silk for Waists, First Floor BECAUSE STEAK WAS TOUGH After Tito Years' Stay, Gabriel Roche Leaves the Poor Farm. Gabriel Roche Is a 74-year-old French man, who has a decided grievance against tho County Poor Farm. He lived thero for two years, but left several days ago. one reason being that the steak was tough and they declined to servo butter at dinner time. In an interview with an Oregonlan re porter yesterday, Roche, who now lives on Morrison street near Front, said: "I was born near the town of St. Halo, Brittany, France, and I came to Portland la 1S57 and left, four years later. Two years ago I returned and became an ln mato of tho County Poor Farm. They have net used me well up there. They made mo pitch hay, alone work usually given to three men. Then I refused to work any more at this, and they ordered me to work In the woods, clearing land. I took my dinner with me, but trouble came when the officials refused to give xne butter for the bread. The coffee TP like dlshwash. For breakfast, I got a stew, tho main composition of which was potatoes. Supper was bread and mo lasses, and boiled potatoes. The steak was tough, and I couldn't eat It, on, ac count of my bad teeth." "Are those all the complaints you have against tho Poor Farm?" was asked. "Are they not enough?" said Roche excitedly. "I left thero last Thursday week. I couldn't stand It any more. I claim that by not allowing me to work on roadmaklng near the Poor Farm the county lost 530, because other men had to be hired to do "the work. Three months ago there was considerable hauling of wood around tho farm, and men were paid $30 for this. I could have done tho work, so I claim that the county In, those two Instances lost over $50 by pay ing men to do work which I could have done for nothing as an Inmate of tho farm." PROTEST AGAINST SALE." Marauum Assert That Disposal of Property Was Illegal. The sale of the Marquam properties by the Sheriff last week was not confirmed by tho Circuit Court yesterday, as would have been done had not an objection to tho proceeding been filed. The attor neys of P. A. and Emma Marquam en tered a motion In Judge Cleland's de partment, afilrmins that the sale was Ir regular and should not be confirmed by tho court. The grounds of the motion are that the notice of the sale was given In a Sunday newspaper, and was therefore cull and void; that the tracts of land were separate and distinct, but not so sold; that the notices of the sale were not posted in three public places for four weeks, as required by law; that the Sheriff in his return did not state where the notices of the sale were posted. The petitioners ask that the sale be set aside and the property ordered re sold. J. Thorburn Rss bought In the aroperty at the sale for J3C3.M9 97. Bea verton, Or., are visiting the business part of Portland, soliciting Christmas dona tions for the orphans of St. Mary's Home. In order to protect the charitably Inclined from Impostors, these two Sisters will, during this week, have a letter from Su perintendent Faber, dated December 15, 1300, to identify them. Two other Sisters of the Home are collecting In the Sacrea Heart Parish, or the East Side, also foi St. Mary's Home. They have a lettci from Archbishop Christie. St. Mary's Home supports, at present, 70 orphans, of whom .seven are babies of less than 1 ycat old, in its main Institution, situated one mile west of Beaverton, and 20 orphan girls In its branch Institution at St. PauL "The total number of the inmates ot St. Mary's Home, Inclusive of attendants and hired hands. For support. It relies mainly upon char itable contributions. "These contributions, although liberal, did not by far come up this year to tht expenses, and the ends do not meet. "All the priests in Oregon are most will ing to accept donations for St. Mary Home and send them to us. "In Portland, donations mnv ho .mt besides to the residence of each priest, especially to the archbishop's residence, and to St. Mary's Academy, on Fourth street." COUNTY SEAT OF UNION. Question May Come Up nt the Next Legislative Session. D. A. McAlister. member of the Leg islature from "Union County, Is spending a few days at the Imperial. In speaking last evening of the projected attempt to remove the county seat from Union to La Grande he said there was very little talk of It Just now. In Union County, though there was no telling how forcibly It might be sprung In the Legislature when that body meets In January. "Old La Grande had the county seat of Union prior to 1S7L" he said, "and many of the old settlers of the western part of the county think the new La Grande ought to recover it. La Grande has become quite a power In the politics of Union County as It casts about one fourth of the votes. The amount of busi ness done In La Grande Is largely In excess of Union while Its hotel accom modation is also superior." These items become strong arguments whon, the question of county seat removal comes up. though how the election would go "In case of resubmlttal, Mr. McAlisteV did not venture an opinion. Many citi zens might vote to retain tho county seat mmiep We are ready today to serve you quickly and to your entire satisfaction. We offer everything pretty and serviceable. PLAGEMANN. Mgr. 288 MORRISON STREET COSTLIEST BECAUSE BEST. M. STACHELBERG & CQ.'S HAVANA ESPECIALLY PACKED at TJrtfon, he said, for fear of the higher taxes Its removal might create. He Is opposed to the question coming before the Legislature, as It ties up other legislation -which might be beneficial to Union County. "I would like to see these county seat questions settled within the counties in terested " he said, "Instead of having them lugged into the Legislature, the majority of whose members know nothing of the conditions. If a majority of electors could petition the County Court and thus settle the question at home it would be much better, all around." BUSINESS ITEMS.
