OPPOSITION TO IRRIGATION
Friend Fear Majority Public- Land
Committees Are Afcalast It.
"WASHINGTON, Dec, 9. It nowr devel
ops that one of the important reasons
why the friends of Irrigation legislation
arc endeavoring: to secure recognition
through the nver and harbor committee
is because it is fearod that a majority
of the public lands cornmiitec of the
Ilouse are opposed to adopting- any sys
tem of construclnjf irrigation reservoirs
by the general Government, and will not
report favorably any bill for that pur
pose. At the last session, It will be remem
bered, an attempt was made to get such
a bll reported to the House, but when it
was referred to the -General Xand Office
for recommendation, an adverse report
was mnde, 'and the bill did not .get out
of committee. This j-ear new schemes
for the construction of reservoirs by the
general Government have been advanced,
and renewed efforts are being' made to se
cure favorable action, both' In the public
lands and river and harbor committee of
the House. In all probability, the House
public lands committee will not report
any bjll of this character, and If Chair
man Burton, of the rivers And harbors
committee, has his way, his committee
will also take adverse action on such
propositions.
Those members of the public lands com
mittee who are Interested In Irrigation
are preparing- to rnako a .fight for their
schemes at an early day. and it Is very
probable that much of the time of the
committee for several weeks will be
largely taken" up -m the discussion of" the
various propositions. While Chairman
Iacey has not committed himself on this
proposition as yet, it Is inferred' from his
general remark's that he. like Mr. Burton,
is not a believer In the Government con
struction of Irrigation reservoirs and can
als, -Such opposition, headed by the
two phalrmen. Is almost certain to prove
