THE MORNING OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1900. TRIED TO KILL HIMSELF. Wife-Beater Cut His Throat, "but Didn't Go Seep EaoHga. Fritz Poal. .. prisoner at the County Jail, made an unsuccessful attempt to take his life yesterday morning by slash ing his throat -with a razor. This was discovered by Jailer Mitchell, -when he unlocked the cells at 6 o'clock in the morning-. "When Poal's cell was opened he fell out upon the floor, with the gaping wound still bleeding. County Physician McKay was immediately called, and the man was taken to the hospital at the poor farm. Two hours' work In sewing up his wound placed htm out of immediate dan ger. Poal had committed the act very gingerly, and had failed to sever the windpipe or the Jugular vein. The razor he stole from his bunkmate, who had been given It by Jailer Mitchell for a morning shave. Poal has spent much of bis time in JaiL He has the reputation of treating his wife and children cruelly, and Thanks giving day drove her and the children out of the house and fed the holiday tur key and dinner to the dogs. He was ar rested for drunkenness, and managed to get out of the jail by passing himself pff for a friend for whom ball had been sent. He was given his friend's money and per sonal belongings. "When the mistake was discovered he was arrested again and convicted of larceny. Previously, while In Jail, he has attempted to dash out his brains, but has always lacked courage to carry out his suicidal Intentions. From Pen of Henry Drummond. PORTLAND, Dec. 11. CTo the Editor.) The Quotation. "I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do It now.
