THE MORNING OREGONIAN, RATUBDA'Z, DECEMBEE 1, 1900. If COMMERCIAL AND The last day of the month following' a holiday found business In much better shape than usual. The commission-house portion of Front ttreet was busy making a clean-up of the left-over stocks of pro duce v, hicfi came in "during: the last hour "Wednesday night. There vras a large number of turkeys carried over, and, while the most of the jstock was In rather poor shape, there was some good stock among: it. Dressed turkeys sold around 10 cents per pund, andlive aSflow as 8 cents. There Is no demand for chickens, and both live and dressed are -so plentiful that It will require the Test of the week to clean their up ax any kind o ayprice. Some culls were sold yesterday as low as J2 per jlozen. The- market for onions and potatoes continues flnrii with another advance probably. Receipts of Oregon eggs are a llUle more liberal, but he (price still holds firm at 35 cents, with East ern plentiful, at" 23 and Ztfr cents? Unnlc Clearings. Exchanges, Balances. XEW TOIUC STOCK MARKETS. Ijgrrsc Business, bnt Activity 'Was ot "Well Maintained. NEW YORK. Nov. SO. TheTe was a large business .done In stocks again to day, but the activity was not well main tained throughout the session. The sur face indications were $hat the large early tfuslness was for Lbndon account. For instance, th prices of Americans ad vanced in London before th opening, here. This wa"s In spite of the general heavi ness of the London market, due to the FINANCIAL NEWS money market conditions and ,to discour aging news from SoUth.Afrlca.' But after the opening here foreign artfttage ibroTfers were sellers of stocks, and their sales on. balance for today were estimated at 40, 000 shares. The Inference is pretty plain that London's early advance was on New York buying, while, t,he genuine London transactions in. this market were on' the selling side. Tney had little influenceon prices, which went to the best generally after the arbitrage operators had ceased. The influence of the mid-week interrup tion of Thanksgiving was still manifest today. There was much closing up of accbunts oh Wednesday, aqd thera.was general Indisposition to reopen ihem to day for a day -and a half. With the. exception of 'Some continued large buying in some quarters of the railroad list, the trading was taerefore rather languid, es pecially, during the latter part of the day. A firmer tendency of the money market and a rise in tfie call loan rate to & per cent late In the day were also an Influence towards Tepressin? activity. Prices of stpeks were affected bjf. the rise in the money rate, but There wcro substantial rallies in spots, and tlje clos ing was firm but not at tha best. In Jho railroad list, stocks of Southern and South wes tern roads were notably firm, led by Chesapeake & Ohio, which got tip 2i and closed at the top. The Chicago & Alton stocks rose strongly. The tobac. co stocks w ere weak on the w ithdrawal of Important Interests. Pacific Mall reacted 3. The American Smelting stocks were weak early on an alleged project tQ 'or ganize an opposition company? but rained strongly and closed with good net gains. The downward course of Amalgamated Copperwas checked after an early decline and th"sock lias a net gain on the day. The .steel stocks were rather neglected alj djiy, and they showed net changes both ways. The bond market was active and strong, with a notable demand for Kansas & Texas, St Louis & Southwestern. South ern PooJflc, Union? Pacific, Atchison & Reading Issues. Total sales par value, $3,260,000. United States refunding- 2s and the 5a registered declined Yt, and the new 4s ad vanced H per cent on the last call.
