In Portland, dealers who were eager for wheat: at H and even 54V cents on Mon day, had apparently become alarmed by the continued weakness, and refused to Iuote over 53 and SB cents, although some sales were made at 54 cents. Offer ings were more free at this figure, and a large amount could be secured at 54 and 64 cents. There is only a nominal demand fat bluestem, and some dealers refuse to grant more than 2 cents differ ential, although 2 cants Is generally paid. "Wheat Walla Walla. NEWS day, and the general level of stock prices is lower than it was last night. The day's 'net changes--which are-.fractional exoept in a few stocks, gives no idea of the wide movement of prices during the -day nor -of the notable strength shown at times by & few stocks. This Is I due to the fact that the market was generally ttrong in the early dealings and was only carried below last night's level by a very sharp reaction, which ralso reduced the gains of the strong- stocks. The notably strong points were in the. coalers, 'Southern Railway pre ferred, Baltimore & Ohio, Southern Pa cific and th American Smelting stocks. The movement in the coalers was helped by the Wintry weather reported. The movement caused the revival of old ru mors nt consolidation or change of con trol, the effect being notably manifest in New Jersey Central, which -rose 6, joints, to 149. reacting . The business in the group was small, except in the Readings, which reflected very heavy and concentrated buying. The first preferred rose at one time V& and closed a point lower. Large buying continued of Southern preferred, and rumors continued of a coming Increase of dividend and a disso lution of the voting trust. This was, about the only stock except the Denver & Rio Grandes of yesterday's strong, group which held out the day. The Amercan Smelting stocks rose 2 and 1 for the common and preferred, on talk of absorption of the principal com peting interests. International Power rose 4 points without explanation. Short ly before the close, very large buying of Southern Pacific came Into Torce, the individual transactions, running from 1000 to 0000 shares and lifting the. stock 2 points. During the early" part .of the day while the general market wan strong, the Steel and Cdpper stocks were weak. The Steel stocks showed a dispo sition to rally, especially Steel & Wire, which got above 44" at one time. The stock closed unchanged. Amalgamated Copper was very heavily sold and late in the day fell to 94 and closed with a net lews of . The general reaction in the market was not accompanied" by any unfavorable developments in the general condltons, but to disappointment of some speculative expectations. The principal of these was that today's London Stock Exchange settlement would develop a very heavy short Interest In Americans. On the contrary It was shown, that quite a large long account existed in Americans, and that London sold 6tocks here for the new account. Another speculative" assumption was that Chicago and the West had been prevented yesterday by the Interruption of wire communication from buying Stocks very largely, but the opportunity of today was not taken advantage pf. Conditions in the money market con tinue very easy, In, spite pf the gain by the Subtreasury from the banks on rou tine operations and the approach of the mpqihly settlement perlpd, which usu ally 'makes demands on the' money mar ket. The action of the money and ex change markets in response to Lon don's operations in stocks, suggests that London's speculative operations here are being carried with local money market facilities. Thus today's selling by Lon don had no effect on the exchange mar ket, which was lower In, eplte 'of the higher money rate in London. The easier tendency of- local money might be due to the release of funds caused by the London liquidation. The bond market was active and prices were higher. Total sales, par value, 53,075.000. November corn, with Phillips still in control and shorts trying Irf every way to get No. 2 to deliver to him before the close next Fri day, was the feature on the Board of Trade today, and, while not spectacu lar, was fairly active. For delivery this month, corn sold between 4061c, and closed lc higher at 50c. Private elevators delivered 90,000 bushels of contract grade, and of tho receipts 912 cars but 57 cars graded contract. Contract stocks for tho week, 1,151,000 bushels, show an in crease of 461,000 bushels. It was reported that shorts hed'ordered No. 2 corn pre viously shipped to Buffalo and 'Montreal to be shipped 'back here by fast freight. The rerort had no effect on the. market, and II is doubtful that the corn can be brought here in time for delivery Fri day. Phillips sold about 200,000 bushels during the session. Much of the buying was oh stop-loss orders from shorts. De cember was firm early -on light cbuntry acceptances, but during the afternoon a drive was made at it, and the price fell "sic. December closed c down at 36c. Wheat was dull and inactive. The mar ket opened weak. December was c lower at 7070?8c on weak cables, but rallied later to 7070c on reports of damage to the crop in -the Southwest. The report that the Czar had died influ enced considerable selling near the end of .the session, and December dropped snarply to 70c. The close was weak, c lower at 70c. There was consid erable changing of December for May at 3c difference. A scarcity of news, due to trouble Tvlth the telegraph wires, again interfered with business. There 'was little change in the monoto nous situation In cats. December closed a shade up at 21c. Provisions were easier early, on a heavy run-of hogs, but rallied later on buying by an influential trader. There was a moderate outside demand, and. the close was fairly Steady, although at some re cession from the top. January pork closed unchanged. Lard was 2c lower, and fibs a 'shade down. PORTLAND, Nov. 26. To the Editor.) Referring to your item in last Thurs day's Oregohlan. in which it was stated that "Kruger will receive a grand ova tion because he was a coward in the face of danger. But that makes no difference with Frenchmen. French ideas are diffi cult for the American mind to under stand," allow me to say: Don't you re member that Benjamin Franklin went on thft same mission to France that calls Krugpr to that country now? Is there any true American who would call Frank lin a coward? If it had not been for the liberty-loving Frenchmen, whose ideals then were easily understood by every American mind, what would have be c6me of the American colonies? Why don't you and Mr. McKlnley go to the Philippines and die for the cause you are advocating? But your ideals are difficult to understand by every mind which loves liberty and- justice.
