There -vras-a good trade- in nearly all lines yesterday, and In the produce "mar kets there Je a better feeling. Receipts "were heavy, but a good clean-up was made, except In the case of. poor-quality chickens, which continue to pour In again cs though the supply was Inexhaustible. Butter is very firm, and an advance In price Is dally expected. Eggs continue to move well at the top quotations, al though receipts are Increasing. Turkeys are not coming in "very freely, consider ing that but four business days remain before Thanksgiving. Prices are Arm, and will Increase, unless receipts are much heavier within the next 48 hours. In the grocery market the principal feat ure of Interest Is a renewal of the strife between the sugar and coffee- magnates. and as a result package coffees declined 1 cent yesterday. Further Break in the Steel nnd Wre Stock. NEW YORK, Nov. 23.-The slump In Stoei & Wire of 4Vi points Just at the ol&se of trading last evening was uhl versally regarded as a danger signal. The 'speculative public came down .to Wall street thle morning In a mood receptive to suggestion of depression and reaotion. The, first suggestion came In the form of a further brealc of 3 points In Steel & Wire. Apparently no more effective point could have been selected at which to at- tack the market. This was known from previous experiences with this particular slock. The iron and steel trades are sup posed to have had most "to hope, and. In fact, actually to have enjoyed most of benefit of the revival of business and In dustry. The sudden weakness of Steel & Wire did not raise any doubts of the re ports heretofore accepted of the pros perous conditions In that trade and the excellent prospects for the future, but it did arouse serious apprehensions of a de termination upon the part of some of the steel magnates to enter upon a course of clashing competition aud to unsettle the trade, as they have already proved them selves abundantly able to do. The wide effect of such -an attack of hostilities in the steel trade may bemeasured by the degree of apprehension exhibited by hold ers of long stock today. Th steal stocks themselves were most immediately affected, hut heavy declines are shown In almost every department of the stock list- The sharp effect produced was due In part, of edurse, to the ex tended speculative accounts held all through the market The purpose of the bear maneuver was palpably to dielodge these holdings. They succeeded very well in doing this. As the decline in; prices extended the offerings increased. Those stocks fn which the recent speculation had advanced most active were naturally the. most affected. The local tractions, the grangers, the Pacifies and Baltimore & Ohio were Dromlnent In the downward movement Sugar was freely oold on the cut in the price of refined sugar end coffee,- which seemed to threaten a renewal of the trade war.. But the stock was feverish at all times. Practically the only effective re sistance to the decline was In the early dealings. New York Central and Chesa peake & Ohio showed strength &, that flrae. New York Central rose 1 over ast night An effort was also made to boom Amalgamated Copper on the occa sion of its first being dealt In In the un listed department of the exchange, but the first price, which was 99, was the highest. The price subsequently fell back to 97, compared with 9S4 In the curb market last night The frequent rallies during the day, when shorts were taking quick profits, showed professional bear charaoter of the attack on the market. But the buying demand seomed not to ex tend beyond the. short Interest, and the market quickly lost animation on the ral lies. The closing was wavering and un certain, but at considerably above the lowest Jfor many stocks. There was nothing Jn the money market to cause apprehension, rates ruling at 3 per cent, or lower, practically all day. The good receipts of gold from the Pacific Coast insure a good Increase In cash re serves for tomorrow's bank statement, although the net receipts from the Inte rior on the export movement show a considerable falling oft from last week. There were firm spots In the bond mar ket but railroad bonds, as a whole, were affected by sympathy with the reaction ary movement In stocks. Total sales, par value, $2,455,000. CONSUL FLAGG'S ' DISMISSAL He Tells the Story Why He Was Su perseded in. Office. SALEM. Or., Nov. 2L (To the Editor.) Referring to your recent editorial para graph, the cause of Dr. Eben FJageT'sjre moval from his office, as Vice-Consul vat Asuncion, Paraguay, was much more 8erIouii than mere treason, ,He yens ac cused of calling a colored gentleman a "nigger." TrUe, he denies the charge, but the denial appears to have had no weight as opposed to tho statement of the aforesaid colored gentleman and his friends, who probably were, present at the last Republican National Convention. You will see by the letter I encloso that If any charge of sympathy with Spain as against the United States had been made, my brother was unaware of it, and I think you willl be quick to rec ognize that a man who so clearly sees the path of National honor In financial matters Is not likely to be a traitor to his country. Eben comes of good Amer ican Revolutionary stock, and I think, a brother may be pardoned for saying" that he has done it no descredit E. H. FLAGG. ASUNCION, March 13. Dear Brother: Have just recelyed a letter from Georg ine, telling me that you have been elected to the Oregon Legislature on the Re publican ticket That you should have been elected I can quite understand, hut on the Republican ticket is something I did not expect Well, I wish you Joy. Probably you thought, with me. that it was better to see the defeat of our party than to havo it succeed hy a scheme of repudiation, and that a consistent pro tectionist who had the courage of his delusions was preferable to a man who denounced protectionism on the one hand, while on tho other he proposed aklnd of protectionism far more dishonest than that which the Democratic party, by the help of the people, had twlco defeated. Allegations of the wrongful use of a large amount of. the funds of the Chicago Union Traction Company by Charles T. Yerkes and oth er ex-officers of the North- and West Chi cago Street 'Railroad Companies are con tained In an Intervening petition filed to day in the. original suit brought' by the Sutro Brothers against the Consolidation Traction Company and tho Chlcago"Un lon Traction Company. The petition is filed In the name of Edward M. Post and David Christie, shareholders In the Union Traction Company. The validity Is ques tioned of the agreement made in April, 1000, by which the Chicago Consolidated Traction Company secured the right to use the down-town lines controlled by the Union Traction Company In exstiange for $6,750,000 of Its bonds, which were to be placed with the Equitable Trust Com pany, to be given in exchange for shares of the capital Btock of the Consolidated Company. The bonds were to be" guar anteed Joy the Union Traction Company. The agreement is alleged to be the result of a secret understanding. The Inter venes charge that the "actual financial result of said secret understanding and scheme was that Yerkes and his asso ciates in the Consolidated Company fraudulently, Illegally and without any real consideration obtained a gratuitous use of valuable property rights of the Union Traction Company, over $400,000 or its cash and several millions of dollars of Its' personal interest-bearing obliga tions." - AT THE HOTELS.
