KEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
v .
Hcarry Se.Ung Pressure Forced
Prlcea to Lower Levels.
NEW TORK. Nov. 19. The selling pres
sure again proved more than the market
could absorb, and prices are very gener
ally lower as a result. There aro a few
exceptions, both In the railroad and In
dustrial departments, but the strength In
these few stocks was not free from an
appearance of manipulation by the bulla
far the purpose Qf sustaining the, mar
ket and encouraged renewed bujing for
tha advance. The downward course of
prices promptly set In after the market
had opened generally higher. Easier
money in London, and the extent of the
advance for Americans prompted soma
speculative -ventures In that market, and
the stories cabled from abroad of great
trunk line consolidations showing that
tie raraotvrnonger "had been regaling the
British pttblls. with muoh the same kind
of fare as that -which, has heen in Wall
street for some time past.
The lotver prices here in New York at
tracted buying by the arbitrage brokers,
which served to sustain the. market, but
on the "continued evUniw nt -. Y
LOnden. they turned seller and Haul- 1
ta very heavily, the al8oa bUBea
FINANCIAL NBWS
being estimated at upwards of, 40,000
shares. .Selling, from domestic sources
was Iso-very-large. The railroads, as a
rule, were most affected, "and many
standard stocks were forced a point or
over below Saturday's leveL In the late
deallngs.a. strong- demand developed for
Northern Paclflc, which carried It up 2
to 68?i 5reat Northern preferred rose
easjly an extreme 8 points, but this rally,
while it affected the market generally,
and drove the bears to cover, did not
hold, long stock coming out on the ad
vance. When the bears pefcelved this
they made a fresh attack and drove
.prices down again, jand, while tha. level
Of tfis "market did n6t fall generally to
the early low point; the closing "was act
ive and easy. Amongst the polnts-t spe
cial strength should be mentioned Gen
eral Electric, Metropolitan Railway,
American Ice, Colorado Fuel and Amer
ican Smelting, and for a time, Sugar 'and
Brooklyn Transit.
The. announcement of a failure of a
board member had some slight Influence
on sentiment, until it was learned' tb Te
of no Importance. There was no actual
news development to account for the
downward course of prices, and It was
largely due to technical causes. The cus
tom of professionals to tak& the bear
side of the market against a public bull
position asserted itself andthere- was
much solid opinion to be heard that the
rise In prlpos had overrun Itself nnd that
a reaction was overdue. The .money mar
ket -wsb closely scanned -for signs of di
minishing resources. .Call money hard
ened slightly, but eased off again In the
late dealings. New York exchange at
Chicago also fell from a small premium
to" a tmall -discount. The sterling ex
change rate held steady in spite of the
slightly 'firmer money rate here and an
easier rate In London, s The supply -of
grain and. cotton has been much dimin
ished, and exchange experts surmise that
the flnnneBS of 'exchange indicates an ac
cumulation going on for. some purpose,
probably subscriptions of foreign loans.
The volume of business in "bonds' as
well as In stocks was considerably di
minished, but prices of bonds held firmer
than those of stocks. Total sales, par
value. J3S05.000.

opening- Considerable strength was
shown by Liverpool where no strength was
looked for. There was a decrease on pas
sage which was unlocked for also, and
the -leather conditions were unfavorable
although this now Is not much of a fac
tor. There were also smaller world .ship
ments than expected. At the start there
,was ,a fair buying by local professlpnals
with some Indications of covering by Sat-
uniny's aborts aKhouch this did not at
any. time become prominent. Prices were
Irregular at the opening, but the market
was, quickly steadied by tha amount of
wheat offered by commission houses and
for some tlmo the market held about the
top of the opening range.
When the world's .-.lstble figures were
posted, however, the market quickly
turned weak and for the rest of the ses
sion, tho trend of prjees was downward,
support toward the end being almost en
tirely withdrawn from the market. The
J-visible showed an increase of 1,658,000
bushels On the decline early buyers of
fered freely, but found considerable diffi
culty lnjdlsposlng of their wheat. Decem
ber wheat opened at 7171ic, compared
with Saturday's closing price of. 71c. t
sold at,7i"Jsc. then declined Irregularly to
70"4c, where It closed.
Corn was irregular And active for November-
and rather dull for the other
months The opening in all optfons was
firm with wheat and on the unfavorable
weather. Shortly after the opening, a
jump of nearlv 4c took place In November,
due to fears of a squeeze, shorts scram
bling for the Infrequent offerings. Corn
came out freely at the top, however, the
leading selling being by the speculator
who is said to control the situation and
prices declined rapidly. December, after
showing firmness for a time, declined on
the heavy visible Increase, and In sym
pathy with wheat and closed weak and
lower. Receipts were 469 cars. "December
ranged from 35"836c and closed "c lower,
at 35i35ic.
Oats were dull throughout. December
closed &c lower at 2121c.
PVoislons were dull throughout, but
showed some 'strength early In spite of tne
lower increased prices and heavy'receipts.
This was mostly duo to sympathy with the
grain markets. Packers were 'not in the
market t and little outside interest was
shown.'' Tfle range of prices was narrow.

Among all the exhibits of bread and
breadmaking at the Paris Exposition the
one which Interested memost was a sys
tem of milling and baking combined. This
system has a double purpose: (l) To make
the flour more palatable and more, nutri
tious than that made by the ordinary
roller mill; and (2) to make it immediate
ly before baking, so as to secure for the
loaf a flour which Is absolutely fresh. It
is well known that all food substance?!
when ground to a flne, nowder ha e a ten
dency td become oxidized. As is the case(
"u -wuce, iuiii is peai vnen. iresniy
roasted and freshly ground, sp it I3 with
cereal flour, which is never so aromatic,
so .palatable, or so nutritious as at -the
moment when it is flrst made.
The Schweitzer system of milling and
bread-making secures the two pointsmen
tioned above. In Paris a mill and an at
tached bakery on a somewhat larger scale
Illustrated the method which is employed
in supplying bread to a populous commu-
nity. Another installation was a form of
apparatus adapted for use on a farm or
in a small community. So perfect is the
milling system employed that the small
est mill, Intended for use on a farm and
driven by hand, as a coffee mill would
be run, makes flour identical in compo
sition with that made by the largest ma
chine. The Schweitzer system, in regard
to the milling operations, is a return to
the old system of millstones, with the
.exception that corrugated steel grinders
take the place of the millstones of the
olden days. These grinders are so accu
rately adjusted as to admit of the making
Of the finest flour, while avoiding actual
contact of the two grinding surfaces. The
simplicity of the apparatus, its cheapness,
and the ease with which It can be In
stalled, commend this system particularly
for domestic use, and for the supply of
villages and small communities. Never
theless, it is capable of being operated on
an extensive scale, as Is demonstrated
by the largest establishment at La VII
lette, Paris, where more than 100,000
pounds of bread aro made pen day from
flour not "more than 24 hours bid.
