THE MORNINft Qy;GONIAN, BATUBPAff, SEPTEMBER 8, 1900. IX CaMMERGIAL-AND,FINANGIAL-NEWS Bananas, peaches, mejona and sweet NXotatoes came In fcy the carload yester day, and some of the stock failed to move out as fast as It was received. Trade was fairly good considering the fact that the Carnival lever vt&b Btlll running high among all Portlanders, and & large contingent from the country vras assisting in the enjoyment Hops are etill on they up grade, and fears that the rain would cause -damage and further shorten the crop Induced some buyers to advancetheir limits again yesterday, one lot of choice stock receiving an offer of 14 cents, which is fully a cent above previous figures, reported. There Is con siderable disposition on the part of grow lers to sell whije prices are up, .and it Is probable that a large portion of the crop will move very early. Despite the large crowd and attendant big demand, vfor meats of all kinds, the poultry market is in bad shape, it being impossible to work off stocks even at sacrifice fig ures. Best coops of old chickens were cleaned up yesterday as low as ?3 per dozen, and Springs were selling down as low as $1 50 for small stock. The reasons givemfor this weakness are thatfcthe res taurants are so crowded with people that there 4s no time to cook chickens, the crowd demanding something that can be more hurriedly prepared. Eggs, on the other hand, are very firm, with a big de snand. They are still obtainable at 20 cents, although some of the dealers are making an effort to advance prices to 22 cents. The grain markets were quiet, with dealers less Inclined to bid much above export values, although a few scattering sales were reported at prices slightly above quotations. Bank Clearing's. JfBW YORK STOCK MARKET. A JCnrrovr Affnir Exclusively in the Hands of Professionals. NEW YORK, Sept. 7. Today's stock market was exclusively in professional hands. Although it was but a narrow affair, it showed evidence of some op erations of rather larger scope than have been seen during the Summer, reflecting, In all probability, the resumption of ac tivity by some influential traders who have been away for the Summer. Ef forts by the bull clique were in evidence, "but they met with only moderate suc cess. Their method seems to be to pas3. from one stock to another on successive days, seeking some appearance of con v tinuity in the movement by manipulating stocks in "which the Interests are allied or which are materially affected' by -some development of condition. Today Missouri-Pacific was the favorite at an extreme advance from the low point of l&c, with dealings on quite a large scale. The attempt was made to make this seem a 'logical sequence of yesterday's movements In the Southern Railway stocks, and St. X-ouls South western, preferred, wis bought-in on talk of close relations with Missouri Pacific and of benefit from the prevailing .high price of cotton. Meantime the Southern Railway stocks C. & O. and Southern Pacific and other slocks which had been under manipulation earlier in the week, were held back by profit taking. -The fears of a strike of anthracite miners was a depressing factor, and Beading first preferred. Delaware & Hudson and New Jersey Central were off from 1 to lc at times during- the day. Liquidation In the coalers .was not large, however. London was a seller In this market, owing to uneasiness on ac count of the anthracite situation and to firmer money rates In London. The hol iday in London tomorrow also Induced some closing out of accounts. Sugar moved narrowly, on a small volume of dealings and closed with a small net gain. Brooklyn Transit closed with a gain of 2 points, and People's Gas lost 2tf. The money movement for the., week is interesting as showing an excess of ship ments over receipts by express for the first time this season. The sharp de clines In New York exchange at Chicago from 30 cents discount yesterday to 30 cents discount today explains the source' of the demand, their money having gone, out quite freely to the South during the week. Gains by Subtreasury operations, due to payments on Government bond re demptions and of deposits of gold at Pacific Coast points, leave a large mar gin 'of gain to the banks," the Indications being that the increase In cash reserves has reached over $1,000,000. Trading in the bond market was small, except for liquidation of Kansas City Southern bonds. Total sales, par value ?SS5,CO0. - ' ' . '., United States old 4s advanced Vtfi In the bid price. BONDS. U.
