THE MORNING OEEGONIAN, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER f, 1900. If COMMERCIAL AND The last day of ihe jnontlt -was devoid of features of special interest In the local ttrado situation. Falling on Friday, there naturally considerable buying by the tal retailers, -vrho -were stocking up in Sanation of the Saturday trade. JSTuit fcelpts were not -very heavy, but there iras more than enough apples and pears to supply the demand, and prices are very -wreak. Another, carload of Idaho melons -were received, but they are not moving very briskly. The egg market braced up again yesterday, under light receipts, and a kind of hoarding at stocks for next -week, and sales of best candled stock -were made at IS cents per dozen. Butter continues unchanged, vrlth some symptoms of "weakness apparent occa sionally. There "were soft spots in the Eastern -wheat market yesterday, but In the European markets there -was not much change, and -while local buyers were less eager for the cereal than they were a few- days ago, they -were still willing to quote 5G cents and better for Walla Walla, -while Valley was nominally 7 and 58 cents, and bluestem about 59 and BO cents for best stock." SEW YORK STOCK: MARKET. 3To Animation Except in Suffar and People's Gas. " NEW YORK, Aug. 3L Except for somo rather active selling of Sugar and Peo ple's Gas, there -was not a particle of animation In todaj's stock market. The sympathetic effect of the weakness of these two specialties -wiped out the slight opening gains In some of the in ternational railroad stocks. Again at the close, there -was sufficient demand from the short interest -which -was averse to leaving contracts uncovered over tha three days' holiday to stiffen the prices of some of the railroads, but the general tone was easy owing to a late drivo against People's Gas. Among those to show notable firmness were Southern Pa cific, New York Central and Baltimore & Ohio. The -weakness of People's Gas gavo a striking Illustration of the lack of con sistency In the minds of professional oper ators. The other day this st.ock advanced on the report that a newly-organized company In Chicago was in control of in terests friendly to People's Gas. The pro fessional intelligence br todav had ar rived at the conclusion that the formation FINANCIAL NEWS I of this friendly company must be the signal for war upon the Ogden Gas Com pany, the rival of the People's. The stock was accordingly sold industriously at ad expense of 2 in Its price. The movement In Bugar was about equally independent of the news of tho day, and was apparently due to realizing on the advance in the reflried product which was made yesterday. The part tak en by the professional element was based on a scrutiny of the source of t"he orders in the stock, and when tho traders thought they could trace selling orders to Inside sources they trailed on and sold. Tobacco and Brooklyn Transit were Tveak during the morning, but partly recovered later in the day. Chicago Terminal, pre ferred, lost 2; "Onion Bag, preferred. 1; and National Steel, preferred, 1H. Money market conditions, consisting of an easing of the London discount rate, and the promise of a strong bank state ment, were ignored. The bond market was barren of Inci dent. Total sales, par value, $$35,000. United States old 4s declined in the bid price. , Speculation has maintained its indif ferent tone In Wall Street this week. About mid-week there was a stiffening of the market, and an appearance of awakened interest, but It proved to be due to nothing more than a recovering In demand from the shorts. The determined abstinence of capital from taking any part In stock operations" causes some gloomy forebodings among the profes sional traders that the public interest In listed securities has become perma nently Impaired. There Is no doubt that the whole issues of new capital last year, and the methods employed to push up prices of some of the new Industrials to enable promoters to realize handsome ly, and the subsequent collapse of those stocks, made a costly experience for a large speculative contingent and Im paired the confidence of the general pub lic In the values of securities. However, it Is obviously only a question of time when the Increment of capital which has been largo in the prosperous period of the last few years, must seek a fixture In high-class securities. ' Owing to the present -disparity of money rates here and abroad and tho continuing foreign demand for our merchandise products, there Is an obstacle to-the set tlement of the International trade balance In gold. In fact the tendency Is to still further extend the foreign credits, by export of gold as a purchased commodity to cover the reserve requirements of the great foreign banks. As foreigners' needs for our products continue greater than ours for theirs, and our production of gold makes us at the same time the available source of supply for the metal, there Is felt tho pressure of special In ducement to American Creditors to re frain from calling home their foreign balances. It Is considered Inevitable that China must place a largo loan to meet demands for war indemnity, and American capital Is expected to absorb a portion of such loan. The homeward course from Europe of several men Influential In past stock market movements, aroused hopes among professional operators, that the market would throw off Its lethargy, but It was not realised. The bond market has been practically paralyzed, -with the exception of occa sional demand for Individual bonds. United States refunding 2s, when Issued, and old 4s declined In the bid price.
