CHICAGO. Aug. 20 A special to the

The crop is a practical failure, there

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET.
Prices Closed Steady "With, a Rally
In Progress.
KEW YORK, .ug. 20 There was no
radical change today in the character of
recent stock market operations. General
news bearing on the situation was scant,
but what there was furnished ammuni
tion for the bears. London, which,' has
latterly been a buyer, turned seller for
a small amount, and "Western offerings
were effective in special stocKs. General
weakness occurred In special stocks, In
which the Arm of Flower & Co. Is identi
fied, following the announcement of the
death of a member of the firm. These in
clude a half-dozen of the most active
issues, and the losses ranged from 1 to 2
points, with Brooklyn Rapid Transit
and Peoples Gas leading. Elsewhere sell
ing was in moderate volume, but rather
pronounced declines occurred in Sugar,
Tobacco, Consonldated Gas and Metro
politan Street Railway. Railroad, stocks
were much better sustained than the
specialties, the declines extending to a
point only in St. Paul and Rock Island.
"While the general tone throughout the
greater part of the day was reactionary,
there were periods of steadiness when,
the shorts reduced their lines. Some
comment was aroused by the sudden
marking up of General Electric to $1 40&.
Its closing price on Saturday was $1 36.
Reports of a combination with a rival
concern and extensive earnings were cir
culated, of which there was no confirma
tion. Fluctuations in the Steel group were
generally recovered In the late afternoon
on reports of improved trade conditions.
A matter of Interest in connection with
the International money situation was the
decline of money to 3J4 per cent. In the
last hour of trading Peoples Gas and
Brooklyn Rapid Transit were bid up a
point Irom the lowest, which imparted a
stimulus to the entire list. The closing
was steady, with a rally in progress.
Bonds showed irregularity, but changes
were very small. Total sales, par value,
$655,000. United States now 4s advanced
He in the bid price.

London's aionetary pension.
NEW YORK, .Auff. 20.'-A dispatch to
the Times from London says: '
Just in the nick of time your gold be

London stock brokers and others still
grumble at the smart stroke played by
the Chancellor of the Exchequer; but had
he left the money market to. its own de
vices last -week must have seen -the
Bank of England forced to put the rate
up to 5 per cent. As it is, thanks to the
lending of credit promptly 'on the shipped

the mldmonthly stock exchange settle

of the exchequer bond issue, and meet
other capital calls, not only without any
advance in market rates, but with an
ever-increasing ease.

ourselves at tho end of an anxious week
with the loan rates barely more than 3
per- cent, and discount slipping,,, hack
toward 3 per cent.
How long -will this cheapening tendency
last? Probably some weeks, but it' is a
case without comfort, because "wo 'have
not yet received nearly enough gold" to
enable us to cope with the demands that
are sure to arise in October and Novem
ber. Presently, therefore, the market
must begin to harden again. ,
But, from day to day, money, as usual,
controls the discount market, and as
other centers of credit are equally with
out their own in slack times, the stickler
for firm rates Btands without a leverage
to aid him in enforcing hlB. iCeas No fur
ther advance has taken place In the rates
of German markets.
The Bank of France continues to accu-
mulate gold 'until now It possesses 12,

All this signifies that if we had no war
outlays to provide for, we would face the
end of the -year with equanimity. Even
our stock markets begin to pluck'up heart
and talk of business. All else Is languid
enough, and railway stock continues to
dwindle on the hints that the trade has
begun to decline. But we have got con

the Influence of better prices at the yards,

PASSING OF THE PRAIRIE DOG.
'The Grnxlern Have Declared a War
' of Extermination Against Him.
Chicago Tribune.
"Ihe Agricultural Experiment Station at
Lincoln, Neb., has Just issued a bulletin
which seals the fate of that picturesque
little fellow, the prairie dog, the only ob
ject that gives vital interest to the mo
notonous plains of the far West It Is
always a relief to run past a prairie dog
town in the interminably dull expanse of
cactus and sagebrush, but his time has
come, and ho must speedily become an
extinct animal, and the holes which have
once known him shall know him no more
forever.
The Industrial forces of civilization aro
leagued against the prairie dog, and It is
his own fault, -for, innocent as he looks,
iio Is bad. Like Artemus Ward's kangar
roo, he is an "amoosin little cuss," but
he Is destructive. He Itllls-out -the grass,
and as that part of the country fre
quented by tho prairie dog Is almost en
tirely used for grazing purposes, 'hlg ex
termination has been ordered to save tho
land from his ravages.
Tho bulletin gives-the fatal prescription
In minute detail. First, dissolve three
ounces of strychnine and one-half 'pound
of potassium of cyanide In one quart of
boiling water. Then add two quarts of
molasses, and ono teaspoonful of oil of
anise. Stir. Then pour the solution
over a bushel of wheat, and whllo mixing
it together sprinkle in four pounds ot
finely ground cornmeal, which enables
the grains of wheat to carry o large
amount of poison. It is a. tempting-menu
for Cynomys Ludovlclanus, but one tea
spoonful at a hole ends the career of
tho whole family, and the proportion
given dbpve will dispose of a town of 500
acres, the number of families to the acre
ranging from 90 to 150.
" The bulletin further says that this year
the poisoning Is being done over a large
rango of territory, and with gratifying
results, so that it is not improbable in
a short time tho last prairie dog will
havo disappeared. The railroad traveler
as 'he crosses the great plains, will inlss
the sight of the little fellows who have
added life and gayety to the otherwise
monotonous scenery. But they should
not have been bad. It is to be recretted
that the learned bulletin was not suffi
ciently" explicit. It does not tell what
becomes of the. prairie dog's boarders,
the owl and the rattlesnolce, who,
though never seen, were once popular
ly believed to share with him the com
forts of homo and to dwell tosethejr in
delightful concord. Do they also partake
of the tempting meal left at the door,
and pass away with tho proprietor and
his family? or do they expire of grief as
they witness the sad tragedy?
GovernorRoosevelt was taken hold of by a
gojf enthusiast the other day, and was much
annoyed by the man's lone exposition of tho
vlrtuei pf the games. "Thera Is one gbod
point about It which you have forgotten to
mention," he Eaid, finally. "What's that?"
asked his persecutor. "One doesn't -have to
play It If one doesn't want to," replied the
Got, ernor.
