A DOG STORY.
Animal Lead His Master to Jont

E. JL Groseclose has recovered the
horse lost by Benjamin Groseclose, his
35-year-old son, and three other boys
who went fishing last Sunday. The re
covery of the animal was brought about
by a yellow dog of the genus cur that
has for several years regarded hlmselr
as a fixture about the Groseclose prem
ises. While the hoys were resting In the
shade above Dudley, August 5, the horse
became frightened and disappeared in the
brush, dragging the wagon after it.
Diligent search failed to discover the
equine, and the boys walked home. When
they reached this city it was found the
dog had not accompanied them on their
homeward Journey.
The following day Mr. Groseclose pro.
ceeded in search of the lost horse, dog
and wagon, but his efforts were in vain.
For three days he returned to his quest
fruitlessly. Then he gave it up, think
ing some one had stolen both horse and
wagon.
Thursday night the dog came to the
Groseclose residence and scratched on the
door. When Mr. 'Groseclose arose to ad
mit him he trotted some distance up the
street. looked back and whined. No at
tention was paid to the matter at t:;c
time, but as the dog continued its strange

to follow it and see what It would do.
The faithful animal led him some dis
tance above Dudley and directly to where
the horee and wagon were caught fast
In a thicket. The horse- was very weak,
having had neither food nor water for
five days. It was brought to this city
yesterday (August 10).
The dog may be yellow and only a
mongre but when he outshines human
intelligence In recovering a horse from a
condition of starvation. It goes to prove
that you cannot always tell even a dog
by the coat he wears.

Portland Capital Interested in Mine
on Grand Honde River.

Newton Hibbs returned last evening
from Portland where he spent the past
week on business connected with his coal
mining Interests on the Grand ROnde
River. He reports success in his efforts
to interest capital In the enterprise to
such an extent that the coal prospects
will be fully developed In the immediate
future. Capitalists, he says, are looking
earnestly towards the Snake River Basin
and the prospect for relief for the cop
per camps as well as the other Interests
In this region is very flattering.
Mr. Hibbs reports a general interest
manifest in Portland In the railroad sit
uation In the Clearwater region. Prom
inent business men look forward hope
fully to the early extension of the O. R.
& JC. road to Lewlston and beyond. The
Chamber of Commerce recently gave pub
lic expression of their general feeling on
this subject. Individuals are forcible In
their demands for this facility to Port
land's commercial interests. There seems
to be a general belief in Portland busi
noss circles that the Lewiston-Rlparla
road will be built in the near future.
The truce Is said to be a thing of the
past with the Northern Pacific and, the
O. R. & N. The break in traffic arrange
ments Is cited as conclusive evidence of
another different policy of the future.
A Female Recluse.
Florence West.
There was a strange woman In Flor
ence Tuesday, whose actions aroused
some curiosity. She came from the south,
and left by the beach toward Hecla,
after eating dinner and paying for It at
tle Morris Hotel. She would not tell
anything as to where she came from or
where she was going, except that she
said she was traveling up the beach, and
intended to build a fire and camp cut.

The distribution of pressure remains practi

tain and Pacific Coast States during the last
24 hours. A small but general rise In tem
perature has taken place, and seasonable tem
peratures rrevail generally throughout the
Northwest. The Indications are for fair and
