acter foreseen by your "Western corres
pondent in Mar and June; the McKin
lejite dream of an easy victory has given
way to great anxiety about the -whole
"Western midland, from Lake Ontario to
the Rocky Mountains- Ohio Is a doubt
ful state, dependent on Jones, the Pro
hibitionists and the German anti-Imperialists;
so are Indiana, Illinois, Mich
igan, Minnesota, and even "Wisconsin,
which In early June seemed as safe for
McKInley as Massachusetts. Kentucky
Is to lost to Taylor and his assassinat
ing crowd, and trill give Bryan a rous
ing majority; "West Virginia and Mary
land are more likely to go for Bryan
than not. In fact, the McKInley -party
is still losing everywhere, as it has for
35 months past, except In Oregon: and
If the Chinese trade blockade continues,
will lose In the Pacific States.
The stately phalanx of Gold Democrats
which made so imposing a show four
years ago Is fast vanishing away, and
their performance at Indianapolis this
week indicates that they are as much
McKlnlej-ites now as they were In 1S9S.
The nomination of a third ticket Is so
desperately opposed by the McKInley
newspapers that clearly they fear Its
effect en their candidate; it is good pol
icy, therefore. If the defeat of Imperial
ism Is really wanted, to put another
ticket in the field. What helped McKIn
ley in 'B6 and was so Intended, would
Injure him .now; the Indianapolis gold
bugs do not want him defeated. But
where are the followers of these brig
adiers? Does their army consist wholly
of Generals and Colonels? It seems so.
Of the 11,700 who voted In Massachusetts
for Palmer, not 00 could probably be
mustered now; many are dead, and none
of the new voters join this band of de
serters. There was some excuse for the
mutiny then, if the" mutineers had helped
elect Democrats to Congress, and thus
made McKinley's worst sins Impossible
of commitment; but they allowed him to
have a Congress of his own, which first
gave him the Dingley tariff, and then
allowed him a free hand In his Philip
pine war. It Is too late now for these
malcontents to pretend they are Demo
crats; they are merely "Wall-street opera
tors for a rise. Their newspapers are
moved to advocate McKInley by the
same argument that made bad poets in
the days of Perslu6 the stoic:

Finding that Senator Hanna Is having
a good deal of trouble to reconcile his
Marshfield speech and his condescending
lecture to Mr. "WInslow with his speech
of last April against McKInley, Roose
velt. Frye, Hanna, Lodge. Aaron Burr,
Iiouls Napoleon, James Buchanan and
other imperialists and usurpers; I have
been reading that long speech through
for the first time. And I "rather cal
c'late," as we say In the country, that
it will take a speech or a letter from
our Senator about once in two days from
now to tho November election say 50

asserted, and said he proved, in his April
speech, that McKInley had been advo
cating, and in several respects doing,

denounced as unconstitutional by our Su
premo Court, abhorred by the signers of

Jefferson. Seward and Marshall, unfriend
ly to Justice and averse to truth and
only advocated by the ghost of Aaron
Burr as a vindication of his buccaneer
ing expedition down the Mississippi. The
only excuse he could find for McKInley
was 'a cloud before his vision." and
a sanguine hope that hp wM thereafter
"stand with the fathers ot the Republic"
Instead of which, his well-beloved Brutus
has given the Constitution, Declaration,
International law. and "Wordsworth's son
nets another stab, and has stretched the
platform of his own nominating conven
tion to brag of his purpose to keep on
doing all the things for which our Sena
tor so eloquently scolded him, three
months ago. And so, like, his illustrious
predecessor. Ensign Stebbings, who was
In favor of the Maine law, and opposed
to its being put In force, Mr. Hoar favors
International law, but is willing to see it
violated, loves the Declaration, but hugs
the scoffer at it, stands on the Constitu
tion and votes for tho man that breaks
his oath to maintain it. It will take a
much more persuasive rhetorician than
he to "make these contradictions appear
harmonious; the cloud before McKinley's
vision has become a clairvoyant's blun
ders before Mr. Hoar's: and he has the
hallucination of mistaking Bryan for
Aaron Burr, and Boutwell for Benedict
Arnold.

WEATHER CONDITIONS.
The barometer has fallen quite decidedly over
the North Pacific States, and a disturbance of
considerable energy Is central over Northern
Utah. Light rain occurred last night in the
Willamette Valley, and In Eastern Washington
and Northeastern Oregon, while elsewhere in
the North Pacific States no rain has fallen,
although the weather remains cloudy and un
settled. It is generally warmer In Oregon and
Washington, while In the neighboring districts
the changes in temperature have been small
and unimportant. The indications are for
generally fair weather In this district Friday.
