Iff SEVEN DEVILS.
A Couatry ItemnrVnble for Copper
and Scenery.
Boise Statesman.
Mayor Richards, who has Just returned
from a visit tothe Seven Devils coun
try. Is more than ever before confident
that that section Is destined to surprise
the country as a producer of copper. The
Mayor grew enthusiastic in talking about
the possibilities of that district In a min
ing way, but no more so than when he
weit upon the scenery, -which he took in
from the highest of the seven peaks that
give tho locality Its name.
"Looking down, fully 5000 feet below,
I saw the Snake River, winding Its tor
tuous course between the mountains,"
he said. ""Looking back. I saw the moun
tains. In never-ending billows, receding
from tho peak on which I stood. It was
grand. I was never before more im
pressed with the majesty of our moun
tains. It appeared as though if a man
were to fall from the point where I
stood he would land in Snake Hlver.
scarwly touching the mountain side. I
Involuntarily shrank back mountalnward.
The Klcinschmiat grade winds down the
side of the mountain to the river. It is
13 milps long, and was built to get down
a distance of a mile. That will give some
Idea of the sharp angle of the mountain
side."
Mayor Richards said work was now
under way on the Decorah. mine, near the
Bluo Jacket,, which would demonstrate
the extent of the Seven Devils ledges,
which are so mammoth on the surface.
The Decorah has been bored Into with a
diamond drill, and cores of very nice
looking ore have been taken out. The
result of this drilling was so satisfactory
that it was. decided to run a lone tunnel
to tap the Wge at great depth. "Work
is now progressing on this tunnel, which
will tap the ledge 220D feet below the
apex.
"If the showing down there Is what is
confidently exoected. the future of the
Beven Devils is assured. Nothing can
prevent it becoming one of the greatest
copper producers in the world. The tun
nel, I was Informed, would be completed
the desired distance by the 1st of Oc
tober.' Mayor Richards said the Peacock mine
had out 10.000 tons of shipping ore. and
that it was being hauled to the railroad
as fast as teams could take It. The
Blue Jacket mine was working 45 men.
It had discontinued shipping for a time,
but would resume shortly. About SO men
wro workinsr in the Decorah.
