WASHING THE FACE.
Directions for TJolnsr It TioroncW
Ana Scientifically.
Harpers Bazar.
The matter of -washing the face appears
very simple, but It Is the exception,
rather than the rule, when It Is propeny
done. X.ook at a piece of furniture and
note the amount of aust and dirt it "will
collect In a. tevr hours, and one may
realize the quantity the face has to re
ceive. It not only gathers p the minute
particles of all kinds that float about tne
house, but that, too, which Is outside.
There is an old tradition that if one
would preserve a delicate complexion,
water should iot touch the face, the skin
to be cleaned by rubblne It with a piece
of flannel, which might suffice if the face
were kept In a class case. The face
needs hot water applied liberally to it
with the hands, and generally the use of
pure, non-lrritktins soap will not come
amiss. "Wash cloths are often an abomi
nation, as they are too seldom free from
impurities, and the same statement is
true of sponffes. They are left imper
fectly cleansed from the soap that has
been used and are dried at the wash
stand, when after every use they should
be washed, boiled and hung In the air.
I have often seen faces with muddy
skins, dotted with blackheads and plro
r!es because Impurities from wash cloths
and rponges bad been rubbed into the
skin, to its infection.
If the face is oily and filled with fine
blackheads, the latter can be removed by
rubbing them with a soft cloth dipped m
alcohol or In equal parts of colojrne and
water: the latter will cleanse the faco
better than anything else, acting upon
the skin as a gentle stimulant. The con
tact of the 'fingers with the faoe seoms
to have a vivifying effect. It Is easy
while thus dashing the water In the faco
to massage it and bring the blood to the
surface.
If, bowever. the face has not been care
fully looked after in the manner de
scribed, if the oily matter has been al
lowed to collect In the glands and en
large their orifices and the face is dotted
with those unsightly accumulations, the
work of gettlhg rid of them Is no easy
matte". Soma of the largest may be
rubbed out with the soft cloth dipped In
cologne water, especially if the face is
first steamed: but If this method is not
sufficient, thopo remaining must be
pressed out; one bv one. using a watch
key. The hole of the key i? placed ovt
the point, a quick pressure is made and
hft contents of the gland pushed out.
