THE 5BXRX1N& 0,KEGOX5A3S. FRIDAY, ACG0ST 3, .1900. WORMS QUIT THEIR WORK SEASON FOR THE PJEST IS -DRAW ING TO A CLOSE. ffop Not Injured by the Aphis Ore- sron Prune and "Its Relation to California Product. SALEM; Axis. 2. Reports of damage by tfce army worm are becoming; less fro--.irnt, and It appear that the pest Is easing Its -rrork. of devastation. "Hop lice have fo far don jjo damage, and ft is thought the crop irtll suffer po -injury from this cause unless a lone spell of damp weather should set in. Farcnera who have begwi threshing: wheat report not only .a email yield, but also a poor quality. v Charles Long, director for Marlon Coun ty of the Cured Fruit Association of the Pacific Northwest, says that the prune rrep Is making very satisfactory progress toward maturity, and that from present Indications drying will begin soon after September L It was expected that, on account of the short crop of Fellenberg prunes, that fruit would not drop from Jib trees as much this year as usual, but ilr. Long says that so far as he can observe there is no material difference Jn this resneet. Tha rmrtiitv . fruit promises to be good and the price Tain Nearly all the growers of this vicin ity, Mr. Long .among them, arc very much interested in the visit made to thiB section recently by an agent of a prominent California firm of buyers. Mr. Long is .convinced that the agent's offer of from c to c above the market pnee or irtut means something more than that the Arm wanted to buy fruit, but he Is unable to figure out the mean ing of the -move. He says he hears many opinions expressed, one of the most com mon being that this was simply an at tempt at Californlans to get the Oregon growers to hold their fruit until the ralifornla orop has been marketed. It- is well known that prunes can be produced tn Oregon cheaper than In California, and that when the Oregon crop goes on the market with a close margin of profit, the California growers must stop ceiling until the Oregon growers have snld out. The California growers have a rrop this year that will be unusually bird to dispose of. on account of the poor quality. They are therefore anx ious that the Oregon growers shall hold up on prices that wljl be satisfactory to them. By sendipg a buyer up here to offer a high price they hope to give the Oregon growers unwarranted hopes and thus make them 5iold their fruit in expectation of prices still higher than thos-e offered. This explanation finds zome support In the fact that the buyer In question did not make contracts for very much fruit. The prevailing opinion, how ever, Is that advanced by Mr. Shepard, that the California buyers are anxious to get our large sizes of fruit, and were trying to scare the growers into selling early. Honiltig Wheat Crop Rapidly. PENDLETON. On. Aug. i Although an extremely hot spell of weather in terfered somewhat with harvest (vnora. tions, causing sickness among the men and a number of horses to die from the heat and lack of water, the threshing machines Of this county are turning out the wheat Juet as rapidly as they can. The temporary shortage of men has been remedied by the Incoming of enough to man all the crews, and at this time the 1900 crop is being warehoused more rapidly than ever before in the history of the county. Thresher Quit Work. AMITY, Or., Aug. i. Grain threshed so far has becji poor, the yield being D to 16 bushels per acre. Oats Is better, some fields reaching 50 bushels per acre. Machine men are losing money and a number have quit threshing, refusing to continues unless paid C and 1 cents per bushel. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, Aug. 2.-8 P.
