curing -rood cavalry horses for the Orient.

a horse-buying: trip, supposing that he
could And all the animals wanted In the
vicinity of Salinas, hitherto a good base ol
supply for the cavalry. Falling: to make
up anything like the needed number there,
he so reported, and "was ordered on to
Hoi Ister A second disappointment met
him there, and he Is now canvassing the
State of Nevada.
Agents of the German Empire who are
buying up horses here for the German
cavalry -are also finding" their task not
an easy one.

Timefe-Herald from Milwaukee says:
A coaching party given by Francis J.
Johnson, of Racine, to a party of well
known society people came near resulting-
disastrously. Mr. Johnson's tally-ho
had been, covered with paper flowers for
the Racine carnival, and the decorations
had not been removed, and when jiearing
Kenosha the blossoms suddenly caught
fire from a spark from a cigarette and
the startled occupants were obliged to
jump to save themselves from being
hurned, though fortunately all escaped
injury. There were four hoursc? attached
to the vehicle. They became badly fright
ened, and were barely prevented by tke
footman from running away.

Eureka, Cat A disturbance of slight energy Is
Central over Eastern "Washington. Thunder
storms, with slight sprinkles of rain, occurred
this afternoon at Seattle and "Walla "Walla, and
the weather Is threatening over most of Idaho
and near-by portions, ol the adjoining states.
The hot epell is broken in Western Oregon,
but elsewhere It continues. The Indications are
that cooler weather will prevail In the remain
ing portion ol the North Pacific States on
"Wednesday, and be preceded by light thunder
ehowers at widely scattered places throughout
the district ca-t of the Cascade Mountains.
