COMMERCIAL MD
It was tocuearly la taewelc.aad-too laie-'ln
the month for a very large volume of business
yesterday, but the commission-house portion of
Front street-had plenty of nprk. Receipts of
fruit and produce fcy both steamer and train
were very heavy, among other truck being
three carloads of cantaloupes and watermel
ons, a carload of" bananas and a. lot of assortod
fruit. Bananas were of- the Port Llmon va
riety, and arrived In excellent order, and found
a ready sale, although they are not usually re
ceived In carload lota In -the Summer time.
The butter and egg market Is ft little out of
sorts, both being weaker 'on a light demand
and fairly large receipts for the hot season.
Grain markets are dull, and there Is nothing
new In groceries. '

Sugar and Broolclyn Transit Leaders
In Activity.
NEW ,1'ORK, July 30 The stock market
continued very dull and professional today,
but the field of activity broadened out some
what fo as to include more stocks than in
the dealings during the latter part of last
week. The added life to the trading Was on
the selling side, and Inroads were Tnade upon
values: at points that have hold remarkably
firm cp tc the present time. Sugar and
Brooklyn Transit were1 the leaders In point of
activity and weakness, but a number of other
specialties came forward into a fair degree
of prominence It was still a market of spe
cialties, and railways were relatively In tho
background But there was some addition to
the attention "paid to them also. Dealings
were not widely distributed in the railroad
list, the pressure against a few active stocks
In that division apparently not affecting the
firm "undertone of the railroad department as a
whole.
The grangers were most affected, and Burl
ington waa-ttoe leader of the depression, with
a fall of 1 "find practically no recovery. St.
Paul, foil a point, and the decrease in net
taming for June of $155,004, compared with
the correspjandlng period of last 3 ear, was the
effective cause of. heaviness in that stock and

count of the assassination cf King Humbert.
The depression In Bugar was In evidence at
the outset, and apparently due to ahltung, pro
fessional attitude of the traders. There were
reports of a pending strike, which was denied
by representatives of ihe company, and re
ports of approaching competition by unrefined
sugars. Invited, by the present high level -of
prices. r
Tobacco wis affected ty "'profit-taking.' at
tracted by the recent considerable rise. Brook
lyn Transit "was under reneweu pressure, and
fell back to near last week's low price, carry
ing the old local traction stocks with It. The
Steel group dropped under the "unsatisfactory"
outcome of the Chicago conference, designed
to restrict production. Tennessee Coal was
active and 9 eak, falling an extreme 3 points.
The stock rallied a -point. Besides these
points of weakness In special stocks, spec
ulative sentiment disturbed by the uncertainty
regarding the money outlook, the growing
likelihood of 'considerable decrease of net
earnings of railroads, and awakened appre
hension regarding the crops, American ex
change fell a fraction further today, raising
a doubt whether gold is likely to go ontthlS
week.
The tone of the money market remains un
changed, and the opinions regarding the fu
ture events there are a good deal mixed.
The bond market was dull and prices were
inclined to go lower. United rStates bonds
were unchanged at the last call on the ex
change. BONDS.

NOTE OF WARNING.
Itepnbllcnnn "Will Have Fight to
" Carry Next House.
W!ySHINGTON, July 26. Chairman Bab
coclc, of the Republican Congressional
Committee, has given out a note of warn
ing, "j;hat he'fears it will be almost im-possjble-
tp. carry the nxt House, .even If
the Republicans' elected their President.
Whllp Mr. Babcock makes his statement
quite plain. and.Vhows how It could be
done, l is quite wdoubtful If what he pre
dicts, will como ,tp pass. For Instance,
mcn, iike Daly of .New Jersey, who Is a
Democratic member, of the House, and.
who was on tho committee on resolutions
at the Kansas City. Convention, declared
emphatically after 115 .to 1 had. been in
corporated Into the platform, that It
would mean the defeat of nearly every
Democratic member 4n New Yorkj New
Jersey. Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
Outside of the qolld Tammany districts
In New' Tork CltyT -he did .not consider
it possible- for 'the Democrats to be
elected; and lie was1 als5 of the opinion
that Very fer orfthe present Democratic
membership from the states named would
accept a renomlnation which would mean
defeat. It is, of course, a question
whether the Republicans can hold what
they bavo In the West. This they will
no dpnbt be. able to do. In tho Mis
sissippi Valley they may lose a Congress
man here and there", possibly some In the
Ghicago districts, while there is also dan
ger, of losses In Indiana, and scattering
- - Representatives in Ohio and West Tlr
ginta Bu, whatever losses occur in the
Middle Wesjt ought to be easily made up
In tho Eastern States on a platform of
36 to 1. It is stated, though, that a
f great many Democrats who are opposed
to the present expansion policy of tha
Republican party will vote for McKlnley
on tho-Tnoney question, but will voto
"for Democratic members oh the lmperinl-
Msm 'Issue. In Maryland It Is expected
that thetDemocrats will gain some Con
gressional votes, although there is a very
good possibility of the state being carried
for McKlnley.
Of course, the members of Congress,'
and especally those men who have the
patronage ot stake in the House, tho
chairmanships of committees, and all that
goes with it, aro intensely anxious to have
the Republicans 'remain In control of the
House. But it is not beyond tho possibil
ity that a great many people and good
Republicans also would be willing to see
the Hous6 under Democratic cbntrol. for
the reason that they would like to make
4w, ri,rt.fi. -, t.,.iKin tr.
f tain extent in solving problems that wiir
.. . . -, . -,,.,, njw ihtt nrpB.
certainly Would be
thing to see how a
Democratic, House would take up the
question of- the disposition, of Cuba, and
Lwhather It .would have the audacity to
carry out the professed intentions of the
Iemocratic, platforms and speakers In
L making Cuba absolutely Independent, and
withdrawing air- united States control
from the island. As to the Philippines,
no one could s"ny how the Democratic
House would move. Unquestionably, un
der present conditions the control of tho
Philippines is vested in Congress, and It
might not, be very .bad Republican poll
tics. If -the House should turn up Demo-
oratic to allow that party to inaugurate
measures, dealing with the Islands
There Is no doubt that one reason why
Chairman Babcock issued his- manifesto
was toalarm the. Republicans everywhere
and. to stimulate , them to better efforts
in the campaign- that is to come. It la a
fact that the Republicans feared an
apathetic campaign, and are doing every
thing they can to stimulate interest, not
only Jft the Presidential, but In the' Con
gressional election; -and. Chairman Bab
cock's manifesto was no doubt dlroctcd
toward those men who are not taking the
-active Interest In that campaign which
he thinks should be manifested If the
Republicans arc to retain control of the
riHouse.
