THE MORNING: OREGONL&N, FRIDAY,- JTJLTfl -27,- 1900! IX COMMERCIAL AND Continued heavy receipts of fruit, with the demand not Increasing proportionately, were the principal features of the trade situation In the commission-house portloa of Front street yesterday. California fruit Is In poorer 'de mand on account of the Increasing receipts of Oregon stock. There were Quite liberal re ceipts of canteloupes and nutmeg melons from The Dalles yesterday, and Che quality Is much superior to that of former years. Early Oregon peaches are also very plentiful, but the Califor nia Crawford is given the preference In price and demand. Price changes "yesterday vrere few, and of "small consequence. Eggs and but ter were jnovlns all right at the recent ad vance, but" poultry was hardly good enough to be called irm. The grain markets were weak, wltbbut few sales reports Bank Clearings. . KEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Buyers and Sellers Scarce and Busi ness Stag;nnnt. NEW YORK, July 20. The waiting attitude Of the stock market was emphasized today. Both buyers and sellers were ucarce, and the market was nearly stagnant, as shown by tho long Intervals during which the ticker was motionless. The professional traders had a discouraging task In their trades. The mar ket was very reluctant to follow the lead of the few stocks which showed any strength, or to respond to the exceptional weakness In one or two cases. Sugar, Tobacco and Brook lyn Transit formed the center of the rather feeble attempt of the bulls to advance prices. Tho latter stock was lifted at one time over two points. - . Reports were circulated that the statement of earnings for the fiscal year will prove bet ter than has been expected. But tho high price was very poorly held, and. In fact, was entirely lost, though a slight rally saves & small not gain. Missouri Pacific was soft on the practical abandonment of recently encour aged hopes of a dividend. The steel stocks were quiet and Irregular, pending tho confer ence of steel Interests In Chicago, and their undertone was heavy on the threatening atti tude reported to have been assumed by tho most powerful Interests In the trade. Sterling exchange advanced an additional fraction, and the tono was reported strong. Exchange bank ers say that the rate has not yet advanced to a point that offers a profit on exports of gold to London. But It Is believed that the ad vance will continue until the export point Is reached. The Paris requirements for gold from FINANCIAL NEWS New Tork seem to be satisfied for the tlms being. At the beginning of trade In the wheat pit the market derived firm ness under the Influence of ld advance at Liverpool, and yesterday's Indications of for eign willingness to buy the great American cereal at prevailing prices. September opened 9'4c to !49?c over yesterday, at 75976c Then considerations of a different kinds were impressed upon the talent- Liverpool showed inability to hold Its early advance; the South west sold In anticipation of heay receipts, and the Price Current declared that, despite the Pacific Coast shrinkage, the yield of wheat in this country would aggregate 550,000,000 bushels. This statement was regarded with a. smile by some, but it was Influential with others. The outside speculation was lax. and September, with occasional spasms of recovery, gradually sagged to 74c At the bottom there was covering by shorts on renewed talk of cosh sales, and on the receipts, which were less than last year's at the primary points. September rallied in act ive order to 75c and closed firm, c over yesterday, at 75975c Corn was affected at times .because of the early heaviness in wheat and the prospects of a big crop, at others by the excellent shipping Board of Trade and Stock Exchange Brokers GRAIN PROVISIONS . To the Edi tor.) In Saturday's Oregonlnn, in your article. "Inalienable Rights .of Man," you 'speak as though Mr. Bryaa was a Socialist, or of that mind. Mr. Bryan' believes, like Mr. McKinley, in private ownership of all public utilities, and to my mind he would serve the capital class. Just as Mr. McKinley Is doing today. The Socialists' candidate for President is Eu gene V. Debs, whoso name and. platform aro kept in tho background alike by tho Democratic -and Republican press. You speak of the state having to sup port the trlfltng, shiftless class who do not want work 'as being a Socialistic idea. Do not our wealthy today live on the workingman's labor, on his want, his self-denial, on his weakness and his ignor ance? Under Socialism the workingman would not give the best of his earnings to the idle drones. He would not sup port millions of soldiers to kill his brother workers' sons. He would not build a mansion for a Huntington or a Clark and live in a hovel himself. He would not dress his wife and daughter in rags, that a Mss Crocker could wear a $50,000 wedding gown. He would not have to beg for a chanco to toil, that his fam ily might have a bare living, nor would he take off his, hat to clowned idleness. Under Socialism all would havo an equal chance to earn a living, and the able adult, male or female, who wjould not work would derive no benefit from this system. This would Include tho worth less sons of George Pullman, and Anna Gould de Castellano, as well as the most humble man and woman. Socialism does not and never has taught "dividing up," and tho honest rich as well as the great mass of working humanity would be made better and happier in every way by it. In Sunday's Oregonlan. you speak so kindly of Voltaire. To do this you first had to lay aside prejudices and study his motives and teaching. Now treat Social ism the same way, and you will not get It mixed with Mr. Bryan or with the "dlvidlng-up idea." MRS. N. B. FOETISCH. 655 Bast Morrison street. "We hope this letter will not escape the attention of any who doubt the existence of genuine Socialism in the United tSates and in Oregon. It makes interesting reading in connection with a celebrated prophecy of Lord Macaulay. Supplies tor Japanese Army. SAN FRANOISCO. July 2S. H. R.
