There is one pig In New York which
has earned the proud title of conqueror
over a mighty enemy -who was worth
many pigs hides, but did not prove
-worthy of this particular pig's teeth, and
there was a large and hungry python
who wanted to eat up the pig, but -was
whipped all around the ring, says the
New York Times. The pig came off with
out a scratchy but the python lies In a
watery grave in tropical seas, unless
he has become food for sharks.

square meal Just before embarking and
which was hoped, would last them during
the voyage. The shipper of the giant ser
pent told Captain McMulIen that they
would need hardly any food during the
voyage.
"But if any of them does get hungry,"
he said, "you can Just throw him a hen,
for they like live poultry. As for this
big fellow, he has a healthy appetite
and is fond of pork. So I -have brought
along this young piggy. Put him in the
cage, for these yere sarpents like to see
their prey Walking about until they get
good and hungry."
The pig was placed in the same cage
with the largest python. It was a roomy
cage, and as piggy reached the floor he
gave a half snort, half squeak, as his
eyes, jnet those of the serpent blinking
lazily at him, and then he slunk Into the
corner, anxiously watching the enemy.
The snake, hpwever, was too full for ut
terance, and after a few more winks

After waiting In his corner in mortal
terror for a couple of hours, piggy -was

which was filled with good mush and the
remains of the captain's and sailors' din
ner. Even fear does not destroy a hog's
appetite. Courage and confidence re
turned with, a good meal, and the pig,
after polishing oft the contents walked
toward his coiled snakeship, and sniffed
that part of his anatomy within which
his slowly digesting meal lay. The py
thon opened his eyes and smiled benig
Jiaritly. For several days after the snake took
hardly any notice of the pig, who seemed
to be eating all day long. Then the snae
"began to show a few signs of activity.
He would uncoil part of his huge body,

nieal, the snake made toward the trough,
snufTed the food, and then, looking the
pig full in the face, began smacking his
chops just as snakes do with their forked
tongues when they feel good, as though
to say: "Eat on, piggy! "What a nice.
Juicy meal you will make one of these
days!"
The pig, who was becoming a hog.
pushed the snake to the side with his
snout, as though afraid lest It should gob
ble up his food. The snake" "was still lazy,
and -with apparent meekness recoiled It
self and went to sleep again. The pig
became still more encouraged, and grew
hungrier and hungrier, and the more he
atf the larger he grew.
With Increased size there came over
the pig a sense increased greatness,
and not only of familiarity, but also of

python's torpidness left him. He raised
his head about three feet from the floor,
and his eyes lit up with the most malig
nant, aggressive fire. He was hungry,
nnd probably also thoroughly angry with
the pig's familiarities.
The pig seemed instinctively to under
stand what all this meant. His bristles
stood vn and he watched the snake's
every movement. The snake In turn gazed
intently into Its Intended prey's eves, and
-when it thought that It had sufficiently
charmed the pig, made a move forward
to try the effect Piggy, however, out
generaled the snake- and got In the first
lick, which was a lightning rush forward
-and a snap at his antagonist's neck. He
got quite a little mouthful, and his young,
sharp teeth bit It out The giant tried
to envelop him in Its colls, but piggy,
again quick as lightning, bit out a piece
or the stomach, Just where he had been
snuffing at several davs before.
The snake lashed about all over the
cage, while the pig was after It. biting,
snapping and trampling, scratching and
getting in bite after bite. Several sail
ors were attracted by the noise, and man
aged to get the pig out of the cage, and
then the python remained, lying writhing
on the floor. The pig tried to push him
self through the bars of the caee to get
at his enemy again, but was Unable
to do so. The 'python died soon aftr,
and -was thrown overboard and the pig
was put back In the cage, where he 'spent
most of the time at the trough.

last 24 hours in the distribution of pressure
throughout the Rocky Mountain and Pacific
Coast States. The barometer is highest along
the coast and lowest over Idaho. Comfortably
cool weather prevails west of the Cascade
