The devil -is to pay. John P. Robert
son has discovered that had some one
loaned Geqrge "Washington only $1, at
16k per cent per annum, payable Semi
annually, and compounded every six
months, there would on October 1 next
be due to the fortunate lender 58,800,000,
O0Q.C00! And all the property under our
flag, estimated at $75,000,000,000. would pay
less than 1 per cent of the debt! And
all the wealth of the world would proba
bly not pay 10 per cent! This Is one of
the disclosures In Mr. Robertson's de
lightfully dismal communication printed
in yesterday's Statesman. It Is fortu
nate for this country and the world that
some calculating John P. Robertson of his
time did not loan George "Washington a
dollar at that rate of interest, and stay
on top of the earth until October 1 next
to collect and compound his Interest semi
annually. History holds its breath In
thankful consideration of the fate which
the world escaped on account of the fact
that the contemporaries of the Father of
His Country were not good at figuring,
and prompt to act upon their knowledge.
Mr. Robertson also tells us. In slightly
stronger terms than usual, that the "Na
tional banking system is inchoate trea
fcon," and the National banks have been
piling up profits far beyond their share.
And still a lot of owners of private banks
persist in refusing to open National
banks, and actually go out of the Na
tional banking business and even right
here In Salem in spite of the fact that
John P. Robertson points them the way
to much, greater affluence, and proves it
by the figures and figures don't lie,
though John P. will figure. Our old friend
"Uncle John Minto has beat the National
banks making money, by raising sheep.
He has made 100 per cent and more on
his money 100 per cent a year. And still
no one has been greatly downtrodden by
Mr. Minto's good fortune. Let Mr. Rob
ertson figure up the wonderful prqflts
made on sheep, and advise every farmer
to keep a few sheep, and he will stand
a chance of turning his faculty of fig
uring to some account. Then if the sheep
owners gobble up all the wealth, and
crush out -even the National banks, the
wealth will be In good hands, and we will
all be happy yet, and so will our chil
dren, despite the shadow cast over the
universe by that dollar that wasn't
loaned to George "Washington.

California Is intensifying, and It has moved
slightly nprthward. and now Includes part of
Southern Oregon within Its influence. The
barometer is relatively high, along the Inter

the last 24 hours In the Rocky Mountain and
Pacific Coast States. There has been a rlsa of
from 4 to 10 dee. in temperature throughout
the Pacific Northwest, and In Western Ore
gon It Is especially hot with temperatures
