NEW TORK, July 0 The professional oper ators In stocks who have been able to manipu late prices for an advance, owing to the small amount of floating stock In the market, found their efforts td maintain the higher level un availing today. There was nothing In the news of. the day that exerted any marked Influence on the market, and the relapse must be attrib uted to the natural reaction attending profit taking on an advance, and the renewed selling for short account, attracted by the higher level of prices and the palpably shaky tendency of the market as tho day progressed. I The low er prices for Americans in London had little ef fect, as on previous days, and the professional bulls resumed the tactics which were so suc cessful yesterday In lifting the level of prices. Tho steel stocks suffered from realizing on the published report that the steel Interests were conferring to maintain prices. The Lon don selling was persisted In later than usual, and had on effect, in Combination with the break In the steel stocks. The wholo market fell below last night's level, and closed heavy at about the lowest. United States Rubber fell 44 on the failure of the directors to declare the expected dividend for tho quarter. The stock rallied 3 points. Tomorrow's bank statement Is expected to tshqw a gain In coin of Tipwards of $3,000,000, nearly $2,000,000 ol which comes from ' Sub treasury operations In payment of Government bond interest This makes the Immediate fu ture In the money market clear But the speculative surmlso begins to concern Itself with the more distant periods when the Subtreasury will berla to -take the surplus revenue from ifco money' market when further calls "of Gov- FINANCIAL NEWS emment deposits will have to be met, and when the requirements for Moving the crops will be felt. 'ew York exchange at Chicago has gone to a discount, and there was a sharp fall to day at New Orleans, The private discount rate In London continued to harden, and the Bank of England raised Its price for gold bars d. The rate for both sterling exchange and Berlin exchange In New York row In response. The bond(markct today was dull, outside of sales of Reading general 4s, and the market was lrrerular. (To the Edi torsThe Oregonlan this morning Is cor rect in asserting the decline of the old tlm6 campmeetlng. but the diagnosis of the cause of this decline is not so clear. That certain crudities attended the camp meeting of former days no one Informed ort the subject will deny. But the state ment that these gatherings fed upon hysteria and ranting, with nervous women shrieking, resembling alcoholic coma, will hardly be accepted as a fair statement by those familiar with the facts. It Is simple history that, when the camp meeting was in its glory in tho Metho dist Church, the reading of books and papers among these people, an Indication of their intelligence, was considerably above what the average Is now; and, fur thermore, these campmeetlng revivals were direct feeders of the schools and colleges, hundreds and thousands of young, men arid womefl going out of thdse great religious -awakenings In New Tork. Indiana and Iowa, to college, with the high purpose of obtaining an education: and the best citizenship of the Mississippi Valley and New England will, It Is believed, testlfy to the wholesome influence ot the old fashioned campmeetlng. The general hypothesis of The Ore gonlan of Its decline being caused by tho growth of Intelligence among the Methodists might be more likely were It not true that these same Methodists have been suffering of late years a humiliat ing decline in membership, while the fall ing oft In the reading of their books and papers has caused heavy losses finan cially, from, the Atlantic to the Pacific. As to Bishop Vincent being the ideal leader. It Is snid that some of the ablest men of the General Conference recently. in Chicago, advocated his retirement from the episcopacy, because of his mani fest Unfitness for leadefshlp. Too pedan tic and dreamy, he was appointed to re side In the mountains of Switzerland. "Whether 'the passing of the old-time campmeetlng is cause for regret or not is not entirely clear, but its decline Is most likely caused by religious services being maintained everywhere In church buildings, nnd a surfeit of preaching such as It Is. The fact is, the people are preached to. death. C. E. CL1NB. POPULISTS OF IDAHO. "Call far & Convention ox Those Who Oppose Fusion. STJOTHW1CIQ June SO. To tho true Populists of. the State of, Idaho.
