NEW YORK. July 5.-The stock market made a very striking demonstration of recuper ative power today by the way in which It overcame, the early losses. There were wide breaches In the prices, as the result of two days of Ccml-demorallzatlon on foreign stock markets, when tho New York Stock Exchange began trading this morning. American securi ties dealt in In London were depressed all the way from a large fraction to 1 below tho closing price here on Tuesday. British con sols had lost all but 1-10 of a full point, and 4 per cent rentes had fallen 65 centimes from Tuesday's prices. Such was the sinking effect of the alarm in European quarters over the pass to which affairs In China have come. To the alarm on account of the Chinese crisis must be added renewed uneasiness over the financial conditions at Berlin, where there was a condition bordering On a panic "both yesterday and today. Large amounts of sell ing for London account had their Initiative in Berlin. Thff home market began to rally with Increasing vigor after this selling had ceased. The depressing Influence of the Chinese situa tion was converted for home use into a factor of poslUv strength, and for tho first time since, the scare over the crop became an issue the prices for wheat and stocks advanced simultaneously. The argument was that In the event of extensive military operations In China much material would have to be up plted. .from -the Pacific Coast. This served to raise the grangers well over Tuesday's level of prices. The rally was conspicuously ma nipulated. The close generally was about steady near the high level. The money mar ket continued quiet and lower. The bond market was falrlj active, but the movement 'of price was Irregular. The total aales were $1,360,000. United 'States 4s fle- FINANCIAL NEWS clined per cent for the sew, and the old 4s 4 per cent la tho 'bid price. BONDS. TJ. S. 2s, ref. reglOS Gen. Elec Bst 11T do coupon 103 X. Y. "WARM SPRINGsTor., July 4. To the Editor.) In your Issue of the 3d inst, I note the comments of your Washington correspondent, under tho head of "Gossip at the National. Capital," and I herewith beg to correct the erroneous impressions that such statement would tend to con vey in reference to the dropping of the United States Jndlan Agent at Warm Springs Agency, Oregon. It was not a question of the necessity of an agent at said reservation that prompted such ac tion, as all well-informed persons well know that an agent is a necessity for the Indians of this reservation, but the real reason and animus was formulated and recommended In a recent report of a diminutive School Supervisor named Conser. This man Conser did not like the agent at Warm Springs, for the reason that said agent would not assist him in covering up and whitewashing notorious ly Immoral conduct on the part of somo school employes, and the record of the agent being unassailable as to his duties, this method of defeating an appropriation for the agent was adopted and urged by the school people, that they might have no one on guard except of their own ilk and choosing. There are more than 1000 Indians upon this reserve, far removed from civilizing influences. They require an agent who will watch their interests, who will go into their fields and teach, and teach them in the practical methods of life, and teach them how to care for their indi vidual holdings. No superintendent has or will do this, as all his time and ener gies are required at the school. Theso Indian people should not be neglected by the Government. They have always- been loyal, aiding our troops in both the Snake and Modoc wars. In fact, Albert Kuclup, a resident Indian, captured Captain Jack, In the lava beds of Southern Oregon. Such acts should not be repaid by, neg lect at the Instance of a small Supervisor, who is Incompetent to judge of the re quirements of the Indian residents of this agency. Troy (N. Y.) Times. The notion that Richard Crokers recent f visit to ,&.ngiana was ior ino purpose ot racing his horses must be wrong, for Mr. Croker now declares that he has changed his mind upon the -question of sliver and expansion because in the last year he has "studied these questions carefully." When Mr. Croker Is home he has no time for study, for then he Is too busily en gaged in "getting it." So it must "be that he puts in his time when abroad studying questions of state policy.
