The bull contingent In stocks failed to realize their expectations to day, though the changes at the close show net gains for the majority of stocks. The final prices, however, were considerably below the best, and the market during the latter part of tho session uas .considerably unsettled and spotty. In spite of the sustaining Influence of notable strength In somo Mock The opening rise was in sympathy with London, and tvaa attributed to the effoct of the -news from China of tho relief of Tien Tsln. Later advices showed that the periodical settlement In Lon don had disclosed an unexpectedly large bear account In Americans, and the London buying waa the coverlnc of short contracts. It was especially effective In some of the Southern" railroad stocks. New Tork. however, showed Itself Indiffer ent to the progress of events In China, as It has consistently done throughout, and the opening advance was largely lost. The. first rally in the market followed the sharp break In the wheat market, and was most noticeable In the Southwestern grangers, especially Bur lington and Atchison preferred. It was f vldent that tho buying of railroad stocks came largely from the short Interest who were willing to take proflts at a decline In prices, but who were not pressed to taXe losses at the advance. A further rise In the price of lead, following the recovery of yesterday, and the strength of silver, on a large demand from Oriental coun tries, had a tonic effect upon all the metal markets. Sugar was active and erratic, ad Tanclng on the rise in refined sugars, but relapsed on profit-taking. Time money continues to harden, but call loans are still very easy. Some of the speculative bonds thov sharp recoveries, but tho market generally "was lr- FINANCIAL TOWS regular. Tofal rales, par -value. $1,070,000. It waa active, but not wild, and traders In a more leisurely manner readjusted to a degree the prices which broke loose and went soaring last week. There was no change In the North western situation. The Dakotas and Minne sota renewed their pitiful cries of distress over the ruin -of their crops, but generally the cries fell ujHm deaf ears. On the other hand, the Liverpool close was 33"4 under yesterday. and It was declared that the Southwest would raise 100,000.000 bushels more than last jear, an amount nearly sufficient to make up for the shortage occasioned by the Northwest failure. Local longs pressed heavily on the market at the opening, which was at 85i4c to 83c for July. The break stirred the Northwest, and selling orders from that section poured In early, send ing July down to 82c within an hour of tho opening. Some of the Important Jongs were not Fellers, but they were a small minority, for the crowd, with big profits In view, was large. Later In the day July recovered to S3c on a little less pressure from longs for the moment. Tho bulge was lost In short WATCH! ..THE ... There was an other advance noted In the price of lead today, owing to tho continued scarcity of that metal. The close was very unsettled at $4 22A4 274. Spelter was also higher". on account of a good export Inquiry and better cables. The close was firmer In tone at 54 204 25. E.lg-ltOn warrants were weak and "unsettled at 514 25. The brokers' price for lead was 54 10, and for copper $16 25. The Cotton Markets. NEW YORK, June 26. Shorts were given Another .severe, shake-up In today's cotton markets. The weekly Government weather report was received shortly after 1 o'clock, and proved decidedly worse than anticipated, declaring that fields were being abandoned In bottom lands of the central belt, owing to the excessive growth of grass, with lice doing serious damage In other sections. Short3 imme diately took fright, and In their rush to cover oversold accounts, forced prices up to a' level of 25 points over last night's close. Though a relapse followed, the close was very steady, at a net advance of 12 to 20 points. The Jlctnl Markets. NEW YORK, June 26. The American Smelting & Refining Company made an other advance of .c- per pound today, making a second advance in two days. The price for their lead Is now 44c a pound, as against 3c, the bottom price of the year. Bar silver, 6l7aC SAN FRANClSCoTjune 26. Bar silyer, 6154c. . LONDON, June 20. Bir silver, 2Sd. WHERE STANDS BRYAN? Trae Reformer "Will Support 3Ild-dle-of-Road Ticket. SALEM, OrJune CTo the Editor.) I beg to call your attention to the fact that William J. Bryan and Mr. Towno are neither one Populists. -The fusion Populists at the Sioux Falls convention nominated them as Presidential candi dates; but they have not accepted. There fore the only Populjst jarjy in existence Is the straight People's party, headed by Barker and Donnelly. They have come out like men, -with letters' of acceptance of the nominations tendered them. The Sioux Falls deputy Democratic convention accomplished nothing. "When the Demo crats meet In Kansas City, they, will place before the people, as candidates, William J. Bryan and a goldbug, more than likely the great Tammany HIU, of New York, and thus try to hold the fu sion Populists and silver element of the "West with Bryan, and the goldbugs with Hill. This will surely be a new Democ racy, but when they get through they will find that they cannot foql the people. The true reformers will not join any such move; but will cast their votes for Barker and Donnelly, or else, go a step further in reform, and vote for Debs and Harrt man. Oregon will be m found this year with a larger Republican majority than that of four years ago. The Republican majority six years ago over the Populist party alone was only about 7000. This year its majority over the fusion forces was a little over 8000. They can't fuse with Democrats in the North for reform and fight Democrats in tho South for res J form. Tne two Tactions or Democracy do not, and cannot, harmonize. The Populists from the Republican party did not leave it to Join the Democrats. They left for reform principles, and to reform politics, and don't Intend to go back, either, but will try to Inaugurate a new system of government of, by and for MANHOOD RESTORED3?S5SE bio Vitallzer.thftpretcriptlon of afnmooM French physician, will quickly cure you of oil nervous or dkssesof the geserstlce organs, such as iKt Manliood, Innomnlo, JPalna in tlie Back, ScmlHnl KmiMinm, XrrTona Debility, Plmplca l'uataelo2Itirry-, KslinatlncIrilrt."Varlcoccloainl t'onstlpntloe. The Convention Enthusiasm. Boston Herald. The enthusiasm of the Philadelphia con vention, as far as it was manifested for any man, appeared for Theodore Roose velt. President McKlnley, in his office, has been a fluctuating character, and en thusiasm never attends a"personallty in which such traits are embodied. Neither does enthusiasm go out to bosses, who are recognized on all hands as the most Important figures of tho convention. En thusiasm, to exist, must be spontaneous, and there Is never anything spontaneous evoked by machine work. Drawings by Famous Soldiers. Chicagp Record.
