Tho weather was not altogether favorable for trade, and buyers have apparently waited .for the rain to cease falling". The grain markets were firmer all alone the line, but business was of small pro portions. In the produce markets, the demand for old potatoes Is about over. New potatoes are down to 49c 'and 50c per sack In Son Fran cisco, so there Is not much of an opportunity to unload any pf tbesurplus stock of old spuds In that direction Strawberries were practically out of the market yesterday, but raspberries were more plentiful, and 'are lower. Eggs opened "Ihe- woek Arm at 14"415c for best stock, and "butter is also Quite firm. Large Amount of Liquidation at Slight Expense of Values. NEW YORK. June IS. The stock market di gested a large amount of liquidation today at what ems slight expense of alues. consider ing the appearance of extreme weakness manifested by the market at times. This re sult was due to the fact that prices were lifted In the early dealings to a level somewhat above Saturday's close, and that there was a substantial rally In the late dealings on cov ering by the professional bears, who had taken advantage of the softness of the market to put out extensive short lines. But the weakness of the market was none the less evident. Buying throughout the day camo largely from the short Interest, and from inside Interests with the purpose of supporting prices In their own stocks. Preparations for this bad been' made on an elaborate scale in expectation of acute depres sion on foreign exchanges as a result of Sat- urdays development in the Chinese compllca- -tlons; but the weakness In foreign markets was nof as extreme as had been feared, partly owing to the fact that the alarming rumors of .the destruction of the rorelgn legations In Pekln and the death of the German Minister were -somewhat discredited in speculative circles. Prices of American stocks advanced in Lon- .-feD before tho opening here, and London FINANCIAL. NEWS bought stocks of some companies at the open ing, while selling others. .The attitude of Lon don gave color to recent reports that soma of the. principal bear operators pf the New TorJc Exchange -now abroad have been -operating on the short side of the market. The character of the buying was sufficiently manifest from tho dullness Into which the market quickly sank when it rose to and above Saturday's -closing level. The bear traders were active during the day, seeking to uncover stop-lots orders, and reached considerable success all through tho railroad list In which the excitement raged. Tho decline at one time averaged from 1 to ltt points for tha principal active stocks. -Minneapolis & St. Paul fell abruptly 0 points, with a final rally of 2H. Canada Southern. Chicago Great Western preferred A, do deben tures, Chicago Terminal preferred, Hocklcg Valley preferred and Dearer & .Bio Grande preferred lost from 1 to 24; Northwestern pre ferred, 2& and Lackawanna, 4H- The final rally lessened, -all these losses and entirely wiped out some of the smaller. The steel stocks were decidedly Jrregular, National Steel declining 2 and Pressed Steel Car. American Hoop. Tennessee Coal and Re public Steel preferred about 2 polpts each. Fed eral Steel, American. Steel & Wire and Colo rado Fuel were firm. The tone of the market was steady, and the majority of net changes were small. The export -of $2,500,000 .gold to Germany was not without Its effect on 'the weakness of the .market, and further engage menu are looked for further In the week by the French steamer. " The Subtreasury has taken nearly $2,000,000 to the banks since Friday, and New Tork ex change at Chicago rose further to'cOc premium. But tho Government's call for deposits to the arhount of $5,006,000 roust be met by tho banks next week; and the period for tho return flow of currency to the interior to move the crops Is approaching. The results In the money market are subject to increasing surmise. Meantime, part of last week's loan Increase Is now attributed to pperatlons by conservative bouses here who are availing themselves of the low rates for time loans to secure them selves against any future contingency. The bond market was dull by comparison. with stocks, and losses were not so pronounced. Total sales, par value, $1,000,009. United States old-4s and 5s declined per cent In the bid price. STOCKS. Sterling reports of the extreme gravity of the crop situation in the heatgrow!ng states of North and South Da kota and Minnesota made a. , wildly excited opening in wheat. The demand for wheat, es pecially from the Northwest, was far ahead of any this year. Ths. commission houses were stuffed with buying orders from all sections. There was scattered selling for profits, but this Vas readily absorbed, and the advance began at the ringing of the gong at 0:30. July opened U6Sc higher, at 75&C to 75!ie, and al most without a check went booming up to TDvic. He under the high mark last j ear. Tho top was reached half an hour" before tho close., and, such dips as occurred on the ad vance were comparatively frail. From the pin nacle of Its strensth July reacted to 76c. and closed 3c over Saturday, at 7SQ7STc. The great mass of reports may be "briefly summarized as follows: Saturday and Sunday were tne worst days of the season" for ths Spring-wheat crop In the Northwest; many sccT tlons in the 'Northwest will sot raise enough wheat for seed; 30,000,000 bushels Is an. out side possibility for the North Dakota crop, which last year approximated 80,000,000 bush els; North Dakota, South Dakota and' Minne sota combined cannot raise over 100,000,000 bushels, a decreaso from last year of 120. 000,000 bushels: the entire yield of Winter add Spring wheat, notwithstanding the "bumper" crop of Kansas, will not be tnrtr 500.000,000 bushels, according to the estimate of statis ticians now. In comparison with the Spring-wheat advices, the Winter-wheat complaints received little at tention, although they were serious enough in themselves to start things moving. Illinois, .Indiana and Missouri reported damages from excessive rains, and, Russia was said to be suffering from drought in tho south. The market was several, cents out of line It) respect to cash business, ,and In many Instances cash wheat was resold to advantage. Cpm, In spite of the wheat flurry, was rather sluggfsh early. Finally, however, the market grasped the coat-tails of the ascending wheat values, and scored an advance of H4&c oyer Saturday. Oats were somewhat more actlva than usual. In sympathy with wheat. July gained Mc Provisions "were steady, but no attempt was made by the controlling Interests to umuly stimulate tho market. BUSINESS IS BAD. Trade Condition In Enirlnnil Are. Very Unfavorable. NEW TORK. June I8.r-The Times' London financial correspondent cables: The- bank reserve 13 a Uttle better on the week, thanks to the return of coin and notes from Internal circulation, but not' much. In fact. It Is not appreciably stronger than at the beginning of this year, when -the bank rate was C per cent and the open market was only buying the finest paper afloat In the neighbor hood of 7 per cent. Tho shipments of gold from New York, to Parts encourared the directors tp look for re lief from the demands for our gold, and the expected receipt of i500.000 of metal from Russia, known to be on the way, further en couraged them to take the step. Even with out these gold movements it might have been advisable to come down, because the open rnarktt had gradually been depressed to a figuro fully 1 per cent belpw tho 34 Pr cent bank rate. Business Is not as good In various directions as it was some months ago. Our trade re turns for tho month of May seem to contra vcrt this statement, showing as they do in creases of upward of 7 per cent on both ex ports and Imports. But that increase Is a matter of price only. The volume of business Is narrowing, particularly to the east, to South Africa and to some of the nouth American States. e Coal with us continues monstrously dear, and there ought to to, an opportunity for tho pro ducers of this fuel on your side to open up a market with us, beneficial to both countries. Steam, coal Is About 40 per cent above the price at which It ?tood a year ago. With a pauso not only1 In business and in the manu facture of bill of exchange arising from legit imate commerce, there Is also at the present time a remarkable persistency In the Jail In speculation upon tho stock exchange. It Is not the London market alone that suf fers. Business between "London and New Yprk Is still cither the Importation of bonds by American bankers and Investors or gambling wtthln 3. narrow compass by professional oper ators.
