Llrt of Graduates of the Portland Academy and Female Seminary. Few of the present generation remem ber anything about the Portland Acad emy and Female Seminary, which played such an Important part in educating the youth of the previous generation. The old building still stands at the corner of Jefferson and Seventh streets, and a number of those who graduated there are among the professional and busings men of the city, but most of those who presided over the school have dlsap- I peared from the city, and some of them are forgotten. The old academy was opened away back In the late '50s. and was .the leading edu catlonal institution of the city until 1ST4. Tho principals In their order were as fol lows: C. S. Klngsley. Dr. C. H. Hall. O. S. Frambees. T. M. Gatdh, L. L. Rodgers and T. F. Royal. Professor Gatch is now president 6f the State Agricultural Col lege. With his removal from the position of principal the decline of the school be gan, and when St. Helen's Hall and the Bishop Scott Gram'mar School were or ganized, it was no longer a necessity. The alumni kept up an organization for several years, but finally they became scattered and Immersfrd in business, and ! the association dissolved. The following list of the alumni furnished by E. W. Cornell will be of Interest to many old time citizens who wre. friends of the school and knew many of the teachers and pupils: 1S59. Samantha A. nell. 1SG3. Frod R. Strong. Thos. N. Stropg. 1S70. POMEROY, Wash., June 12. (To the Editor.) When was the "Ten Years War" in Cuba? Was It not about the year 1S70? If not, was there not trouble in Cuba about that time? What was the color of the Cuban uniform for a cavalry officer? Was the Spanish Admiral, Mon tojo. killed at Manila, after his ships had been sunk? When will the United States give up control of Cuba? OSCAR D. The Ten Years' War in Cuba was from 1S6S to 1S78. There does not appear to have been any regulation uniform for a Cuban cavalry officer. Admiral Montojo was not killed. No date has been set for withdrawal of United States authority from Cuba. Presumably it will be when the Cubans show themselves capable of maintaining a stable government. Flnnl Accosnt Filed. R. The closing session of the Sunday School Convention yesterday was largely attend ed, and the First Baptist church was Ailed with enthusiastic Sunday-schoci workers. The election of officers ior the ensuing- year resulted as lollows: President, A. A. Morse, Portland; vice- president. A. C Alexander, Athena, Or.; second vice-president, Robert Reld. Salem; treasurer, B. Lee Paget, Portland. Superintendent of primary department, Mrs. C M. Klggins, Portland; normal. Mrs. V. K. Watson, Portland? home, Mra W. R- Winans, Salem; house-to-house visitation, N.'J. Damon, Salem. Executive committee L H. Amos, D. Edgar Clark, Rev. Huber Ferguson, Port land. At the morning session the report of the house-to-house visitation department was given by T. S. McDaniel, who said: "During the year the following towns have made a house-to-house canvass: Sa lem, Helix, Foster, Pendleton; Echo, Athe na, Adama MHton, Weaton. The credit of this work is due to the enterprise of the local workers In these places, and the several Sunday schools seem to have fol lowed up the canvaas better than was done In the city two years ago. My obser vation is that a housc-lo-house canvass which simply collects the names of non attendants UDon the Sundav school or ; church, which Is not promptly followed by a persistent as well as cordial invitation to attend tho Sunday school or church, by the denomination to whom the name Is given, is a disappointment in Its re sults, particularly so In a city as large as Portland. My own belief Is that the can vass ought to be nearly continuous on the part of the various schools rather than to depend upon a pariodJc or spasmodic effort to enroll the entire community in the Sunday school, and I believe that this is much more needed in this clty than In the small communities where the Sunday school officers know nearly every one In the community." Mrs. C M. Kigglns gave the report of the primary department: "I have visited seme few Sunday schools and I feel that tht pr.'mary work of the city is in a moa. satisfactory condition. I feel sure that In most schools the pri mary depa..ment is hi good hands. The teachers are awake and are eagerly tail ing advantage of every new and advanced method and appliance. I have been un able to visit schools outside the city, as no funds are available for this purpose. I think It would be money well spent if tho schools over the state could be per sonally visited, and more enthusiasm put into them. I have written to the county presidents asking them to report their unions. Salem' bos a flourishing union of 25 members. I believe the primary de partment Is not properly estimated. Less attention Is being paid this department than any other. I feel that It stands first in Importance, and would urge the Sunday school workers to give it Its proper place. Give your primary teacher every thing necessary to make her work a suc cess." The report of the normal department was read by Mrs. K. V. Watson, show ing the work which is being done in the training of 'Sunday school teachers. She sold: "I have found normal classes In perhaps nine Sunday schools. Seme of these classes are studying the regu'ar normal lessors and some are doing epecial work under the direction of then leader. The first class to report to me is under the leader ship of Professor Steel, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Sunday school, of Portland. They reported examinations, but found that more time was required to finish the course, so have not yet received the d' p'.omas. In the First Baptist Sunday school a class of some 10 young ladles have com pleted the study o Hamlll's Bible Les cona They are taking- Professor Hamil.'s Normal Bible Lessons course. Taylor Street M. B. Church has a class of somo 15 young ladles, under the leadership of Professor T. T. Davis. They are studying the Harmony of the Gospels. The M. E. Sunday school of Dayton has a normal class, which Includes the entire school. J. R. N. Alexander Henry, a prominent worker, ,prPsent. Afternoon Session. The denominational conferences were largc-Iy attended and were of great In terest, many of Pach denomination taking; part. The primary lesson, conducted by Mro. James Edmunda opened at 2:30, with an address from Mr. Lawrence on "Us ing the Eye Gate In Teaching." In which he emphasized the fact that we learned more up to the age of 7 through the eye than In all after life. Thoprimary work proper 'was excellent and by some was rated the bst session of the convention. The many he.ps on exhibition and the various simple ways in which the same could be usd to llustrate tho lesson separately and In connection with the blackboard, was of great In terest.
