June 14 It would be dimcult to flnfi a salient point In todays stock market on which to hang an Intelligent opinion of the conditions and the prospects. Trading was a. step nearer to the point of absolute stagnation. and the movement of prices throughout showed the doubt and hesitation Just as it has for some time past. Certainly there; wits no heavy liqui dation pressing upon the market today. Sales were Quite Inappreciable, which were made for any other account than that of small room -traders, who would eagerly clofee a contract If thew saw a profit of He or Vic In the change of price. The dullness became so portentous that the bear traders began to divine all sorts of damaging possibilities, the best - defined of which was an impending commercial failure. amounting up Into an tndeflnlte number of millions Diligent Inquiry oa tho trail of this rumor led Into bucket-shops, where the trail was lost. The foreign stock markets were In the same condition as the New Tork market as to dull ness of the speculative Interest, but snowed some firmness In the reduction of the Bank of England's discount rate. Private discount rates In London went louer. and the hardening of the rate In, Berlin and further casing of ster ling rates, both in Paris and Berlin, seemed without effect upon the London money niar- Ket, wnicn is apparently reconciled to surren dering some of Its upplr ot "gold to Pari. The Subtreasury statement showed a gain for yes terday of $3,728,000. as a result or thft pay ments for ifcw gold bars which, were exported on today's steamer to France. Apparently tho, banks have not made any remittance to the Government institution as yet in, response to the call of the Treasury Department tor $5,000, 000 of Government deposits. Money Is stllL moving In large volume from the Interior to New York, and unless tno taking up of the Government deposits Is to figure fn the Sat urday bank statement the cash changes for tno week are likely to be small. A special to the Tribune from "Washington says: The returns oi the elections to Be held In Cuba on Saturday next UU be awaited with considerable Interest In this coun try for several reasons, although It Is not expected that the eentlment In favor of independence or of- annexation to the United States will find a direct expression until the time arrives to chobse members of a constitutional convention. How soon that may be will depend somewhat on the conduct of the impending elections, which are to be lor municipal officers. In order to "be qualified to vote a man must be a native Cuban or the son of n native male Cuban, born while his parents were temporarily living abrpad; or a Span iard living in Cuba at the time of the Treaty of Paris, who has not made dec laration of his decision to preserve his allegiance to tho Crown of Spain. 'He must possess, in addition to the forego ing, one or more of the following qualifi cations: Ability to read and write; own ership of real or personal property to the value of -5250. Thrllirhfr Experience 'of Passengers on a Chlcasro 'Car. ,CHICAGO.'-June 1L WltlPtbe motdrtna'n dead on, thev front platform. an. 'Indiana Avenue electric car. crowded wlth, pas engers, shot across the. railroad trades at Fortieth street just ahead of a freight train late last night and tor three blbcks ran at Cull speed, -with no one at the controlling lever. The "motorman, H. A. Morgan, had fallen hopelessly of heart disease, but the passengers did not real ire -their danger until after it was over and the car had been stopped by the conductor. As the car approached the railroad crossing .the conductor heard tho sound of an approaching train. Looking ahead he saw by the signal lights that the- gates were down. As the car failed to stop, he puiled the bell rope and shouted to the motorman. He received no. answer. The watchman at the crossing, thinking that the motorman nad lost control of his car, Yalsed the gates In hopes that the car would cross Ithe tracks before the locomotive could dispute the nght of way. His calculations were right, for the car just managed to clear the cross ing In safety. The glaring- light from the engine's headlight as It swept across the faces of the passengers and the unusual jarring In crossing the railroad tracks caused a panic in the car. As soon as the crossing had been "passed, the conductor rushed to tho front of the car. where he shut off the current and found the "motorman lying dead on the platform. Suicide of John A. Lynch.
