Considerable ITaeaBlnesa Displayed. Wltli Railroad Securities Loiver. XEW TORK. June 11. After a day of great Irregularity In the movement of prices aad an xtremely narrow interest in the market, prices ci stocks closed generally lower, and on the down grade There were one or two periods of firmness and a few special features of strength, but practically all the gains were wiped out. The market opened generally higher, in sym pathy with a better tone abroad. Estimates by arbitrage houses of buying for London ac count place the number of shares of the gen eral list at upwards of 20,000. Advantage was promptly taken of this London buying to real ize, and the level of the market fell below fiturdaj-s close. Missouri Pacific ran off over a point, aad the grangers were under pres sure on the ground of continued drought In the Northwest, to which was attributed the furious ly active and. excited wheat market. Buying of Reading first preferred and of Northern Parlflc turned the tide of prices upward again. The trunk line tailroad stocks, led by Balti more & Omp, show ed some degree of strength. Tho late reaction In the market had its Incep tion In Northern Paclnc The stock fell away on the announcement that the meeting to con sider the rate -of dividend. rhlch had been fixed for Wednesday, had. teen postponed to Friday, to await the arrival of an Influential member f the otias trustees. Coupled with the opm FINANCIAL NEWS Ion reported by J. J. Hill that "It will be well for us all to go a little slow' In Increasing dividends, fears were awakened In the minus of traders that a disappointment is forthcoming about the dividend on Northern Pacific com mon, which they have expected would be in creased to a regular semi-annual rate of 2 ir cent. 'Baltimore & Ohio showed the closest sympathy with Northern Pacific, on account of Mr. Hill's large interest In that company. The extreme decline la the stock was lfc for North ern P&clSo and 154 for Baltimore & Ohio. The whole market ran off. and closed about steady, but without any tendency to recovery. Some of the strength of Americans in London was due to a report that there had been rains in the Spring-wheat belt, but later develop ments in the wheat market, of course, counter acted this. The principal influence in Im provement of foreign stocks was the more cheerful tone of the Berlin market, and the belief that the crisis In money affairs thero was past. The strong return for the week of the Imperial Bank or Germany emphasized this feeling. But discount rates in Berlin ad anced again today, and In New Tork both the sterling exchange rate on Berlin rose a fraction, notwithstanding the purchase here of stocks for 'foreign account. The late weakness of the market was no doubt partly due to the report which found currency near the close that sold to a considerable amount will be shipped by next Thursday's steamer from New Tork to the Continent, Statistics of railroad traffic from Chicago show a further falling off in the receipts of grain at that point, although the east-bound movement of freight was considerably better than the week before. The comparative firm ness of the trunk line stocks was thus ex plained. The .bond market was iery dull and In clined to be heavy, though there were a few exceptions. June 1L Wheat was excited and buoyant today, and the pit was a very busy jilace." A "huge amount of trade was trans acted. All the commission houses bad an extra number of brokers in the pit "Jammed In, crammed in. any way to get In." as one of them put It Fluctuations were wide. Prac tically there was but one consideration the situation of the Spring crop In the Northwest The frantic advances, however, were Tempered by large profit-realizing sales. Had it not been for these sales, the price might have .advanced right oa through the roof. Despite the stuff put on the market in this way, most of the advance was held. Prices depended upon the pressure of buyers or sellers at the time, July opened at TSHSHc and shot up to 73?ig734c without a break. Realizing by longs" forced It back to 73c but following the dip the market advanced aggressively to 74c the highest price rince October, when the Boer war began. A decline from this price to 73H373Sc was followed by a recovery to 73X073J4.C Oa the heels of this bulge July dropped to 73ic, then recovered to 7CS73ic. and to wind p' dropped to 73c, at which the market closed, 242y,c over Saturday. At the opening, tho fact that the Northwest had received no rain over Saturday was a. piece of bull Information staring traders In the face. Rain had fallen In moderate showers around the drought-stricken territory, but the Dakotas and Minnesota, were still dry. Today's signal service predic tion held forth no relief. During the day the reports of damare la the Northwest flooded the commission homes. The burden of them was that an optimistic view promised less than half a crop; that a week more of dry weather meant the practical destruction of the crop. With In formation of tliis sorj close at hand, foreign news was ignored completely. The com market was quiet, and, although It showed some advance early, under the influ ence of the wheat strength, lost It later, and closed heavy.
