THE MOBNING OREGOKIAN, FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1900. 11" COMMERCIAL AND There -vraa nothing; new la the market situa tion yesterday, although trado vras excellent, with very liberal produce receipts. An effort was made to advance creamery butter to -0c yer roll, but as this flguro would only Invite receipts from outside joints, and again de moralize the market. If Is doubtful about the advance being general. Eggs continue very freak at 13c, although an occasional single case is sold at 12c Strawberries -went down with a thud yesterday. A considerable quan tity of Mount Tabor stock came to hand, and Southern Oregon was plentiful enough to sell down to 8c and J21&C per pound. Hood IUvcr and The Dalles were in a little better shape, and brought 10c and 15c, and best California sold at 10c. Loner prices arc expected today. Baulc Clearing. Exchanges. The Chicago wheat market was back In the old rut again jesterday, and In San Francisco December wheat was still on the wrong side of a dollar a. cental. Railroads Were Loner, and the Out side Public Continue Indifferent. NEW YORK. May 17. The demand for rail road stocks, which has given strength to ths mark a for a number of days past, has been satl8cd, and prices fell back today In tluit deparrcent -of the stock list. This Is accepted In Wa l street as confirmation of the lew that the demand came from an outstanding short Interest in the Wet, and was not based on any undcrllng condition In the companies whose stocks were affected or In business at large The market showed Itself as Indifferent today to ono or two favorable factors which devel oped as It was estcrday to any depressing in fluences. The outside public remains profoundly Indif ferent to the stock market, and commission house business has fallen to practically noth ing. Rumors of the same kind as those which served the purpose of th bulls yesterday con tinued to circulate, such as that Union Paciac or PennsjUanla were to secure control of the Burlington, or Atchison preferred was to re ceive Its full dUidend. or new millionaire In terests were to be represented In Mi-souri Pa cific. But all of these stories were neard with languid Interest, and prices continued to droop. In the Industrial list the losses la prices were not such a. passive matter American Tobacco was under severe pressure all day on account of c.rcumstantlal assertion of the organization of formidable competition. Th stock lost over 6 points, closing at tho lowest. , Sugar suffered Trom reports that the trado war was to assume a more acute stage. Peo ple's Gas was under continued pressure by the yroTe?ional clement amtmg the traders. An odxance In the price of copper was responsible for the sharp rlso In Anaconda, and hid some FINANCIAL NEWS sentimental effect ca the stocks or other metal companies. The stocks In that department were dull and the movement -vtry uncertain, the news concerning the lron'trade continuing generally unfavorable. Both the Bank of England and the" Bank of France made strong weekly returns, and the money conditions Interested and Paris showed relief accordingly. The probability of further gold exports from here Is thus diminished. The local money market continues very easy, and it Is evident that the gold exports hare been offset by gains from other sources. The .bond market was decidedly dull, but showed some advances. Total sales, par value, $1,048,000. United States bonds were unchanged in bid quotations. BONDS. U. S. 2s, ref. 102X1 Gen. The Commercial Ad- vertlser's London financial cablegram says: The market hero was firm today, encouraged by the war news, decided lmproement being recorded in Wcstrallans, where the dreaded failures were aerted. Other favorable In fluences were extreme easy money and ttie strong bank return. Americans were bought throughoufthe session, tho Continent assisting. Dlidend expectations were the chlf influence. London wanted Atchison Issues for this season. Tlntos spurted sharply on purchases by Eng lish bears, who were discouraged by the fort nightly statistics. New York bought Ana condas here. Discount houses reduced deposit rates one-half, and there was some talk of a reduction next week on the bank rate. It Is improbable, however, that this will be done while the war lasts. The Iron Ago, In its weekly review of iron an-: steel con ditions, says: Buyers generally are still waiting; and are not attracted by lower prices offered them as inducements to cover their re quirements. The conditions prevailing at Pittsburg, the great seat of the iron in dustry, are not encouraging. The busi ness now being placed is at special prices, and on special terms. Jt Is extremely dif ficult to make quotations even on such staples of the trade as bessemer pig iron and steel billets. The nominal price of bessemer pig-iron is being sustained by the association. t offers are being made from manufacturers of pig iron elsewhere at lower prices without resulting in sales.
