A. carload of bananas arrived Sunday, many
of them being too ripe to prove profitable for
the handlers. Choice Burbank potatoes are- i
In moderate demand at quotations, but for com
mon stock there Is not much demand. Eggs

NEW TO UK STOCK MA11KET.
Professional Element in Control and
"Weakness Was Pronounced.
NEW YORK. May 7. There were several
points of weakness in the stock market today,
and these were sufficient to turn the room
traders to the bear side of the market. The
cpexations of this professional clement were
the only ones apparent outside of a few stock-,
and they reflected no conditions or even "el
establishcd opinions regarding the general
outlook. The demand for stocks continued
quite Insignificant, so that the moderate of
ferings in large part for the short account of
room traders, made an Impression easily upon
prices, but the decline failed to Induce anj
liquidation, and prices readily rallied when
the bears came to cover.
Tho steel shares were the most conspicuous
in the trading, and were weak from the open
ing. The reported closing of a mill of the
Federal Steel Company Induced the early de
cline, which was languid and sluggish. The
announcement of the resignation from the
board of directors of the American Steel &
"Wire Company of the Sellgman representatives,
and their statement of Irreconcilable objection
to Chairman Gates and his policy caused a
sharp further break la the steel group, la
which Federal Steel was rather more affected
than Steel & "Wire. Pressed Steel Car and
American Smelting ware exceptions In the
group, the former rising over a point. Long
Island broke sharply after Its recent notable
advance on the absorption by Pennsylvania,
and closed OH points lower The bonds of
the company were also heavy. The reaction
was attributed to speculative profit-taking and
occurred, on comparatively small dealings.
Za the railroad list St. Paul, Pennsylvania,
FINANCIAL NEWS
Union Pacific and Baltimore & Ohio had rather
a wide fall on what looked like letting go of
& speculative account. There were heavy
blocks offered of all these. There was a slight
show of strength la spots at the opening In
response to London encouragement over South
African news, but the rise was but momentary.
The rally after the break In the steel stocks
was not well held. General Electric advanced
nearly 3 points In the morning, but saved only
1 point on the day.
The money market continued very easy, and
further gold exports to Paris are expected.
It Is not believed any gold will go to London
In the present condition, and at the present
level of exchange, which declined today, both
for sterling and for Paris checks. Estimated
amounts to go on Thursday to Paris run to
$3,000,000 but no announcements were made of
engagements. The bear traders during the day
professed uneasiness over the gold movement,
as well as over labor difficulties at various
points, the pendency cf the Presidential cam
paign and the reactionary course of business,
which they argue must have Its effect on rail
road earnings.
Railroad bonds showed a yielding tendency.
In sympathy with stocks. Total sales wero
$1,735,000. United States new 4s advanced .
and the old 4s declined per cent la the bid
price.

NEW YORK. May 7. Tho Commercial Ad
vertiser's London financial cablegram says:
There was rather more activity in the mar

kets opened better on Lord Roberts' victories,
but closed Irregular, funds declining for fear
of dear money, it was said, but probably In
connection with forced liquidation. The war
loan was quoted at 1 5-10 premium, closing at
1 1-10. Americans were neglected but firm o-er
parity until New "York sold slightly. London
sold Tlntos. but Paris cheerfully supported
them, and they closed up. Anacondas were
steady. The bank bought 17,000 gold In Ger
man coin. Loans were in less demand, and
bills were close. Tho Board of Trade returns

CHICAGO, May 7. Considering the
bearish tenor of the foreign news, wheat
showed considerable Independence early,
and during the session this spirit was
buoyed up by domestic news of anotner
sort. Cables were lower, world's ship
ments heavy, Russian shipments increas
ing 1,000,000 bushels for tho week, and
there was small increase on passage.
Against these were the Ohio state report,
making the crop condition of that state
41 per cent, an assertion that the Kan
sas wheat was turning yellow from too
much rain, and a decrease in the visible
supply of 2,647,000 bushels. The range of
prices was narrow. A feature of the day
was a sale of July at G7c. Several times
the market touched that figure, but on
each occasion the demand exceeded the
supply, and slight recoveries followed.
The May-July sprdad at the close was
lc July closed c down.
The corn market was dull and prices
were steady. The close was slightly
lower, July closing ?c lower, at 333!)?s.
At the close the May-July difference was
vie. There was considerable selling by
bull houses.
Oats were easy. Influenced by corn, July
closed 4sc down.
Provisions were weak. Tho hog mar
ket was depressed, and long stuff in scat
tered amounts pressed against the market.
From the bottom there was a little recov
ery on buying by packers, but this was
on a small scale, and the end of the ses
sion found the market weak. July pork

England Xovr the Dearest Money
Mar lie t in the "VVoria. ,
NEW YORK, May 7. The Times' Lon
don financial correspondent cables: Does
It not seem an anomaly that gold should
be leaving Xew York for Paris at a time
when, according to your statistical re
turns, the balance of your foreign trade
Is more In your favor than at any pre
vious period of history? Money Is doubt
less cheaper In Xew York than in any
other great market In the world at pres
ent, but it Is also cheaper In Paris than
here or In Germany. By what used to
be considered the law governing the move
ments of bullion that it tended to flow
from cheap markets to dear ones Xiondon
or Berlin should have attracted the metal
from New York sooner than Paris. But
perhaps it will come to us next, and wo
need It badly.
No c'.,hnge happened here during the
week j st past, although yesterday cred
its were 3, per cent. Discount, however,
hold hard at 4 per cent or more, and the
Bank of England has continued to do a
fluctuating discount business. Tho marT
ket, too, had to borrow tho main part of
the Installment due on Thursday on the
"Khakis." Not only is the market with
out means of Its own to pay up tho war
loan, but it cannot subscribe to any other
forms of public Issues except on terms
our spoiled borrowers still refuse to con
cede. Quite a acaro was produced In the home
railway stocks on Friday by the announce
ment that the Midland and "Welsh coal
proprietors intend to raise the price of
coal to railway companies by CO per cent
on new contracts.
Copper shares and metal prices wobbled
considerably last week, and our bears
are hoping against hope that your manip
ulators are at last about to throw up
the sponge.
California Oil Ontpnt.
SAN FRANCISCO, May 7. The output
of oil in California has Increased from
L245.123 barrels in 1S3S. to 2.292.123 barrels
In 1S93. The prospect Is that the output
for the present year will be much larger
than that of 1S39. California now ranks
fourth among the states In the Union in
petroleum production.
One significant feature of the oil dls
coverles In the state Is that they will put
California on an equality with other states
In the Union as far as the fuel question
goes. Tho estimate has been made that
three and one-half barrels of California
petroleum are equal to one ton of coal.
The Metal Marketer.
NEW YORK, May 7. There was con
siderable irregularity and weakness devel
oped in the market for metals today. Ca
bles were of an unsatisfactory purport.
Lead, after a prolonged dullness of sev
eral months, dropped 27 points today,
owing to the continued lack of demand,
closing weak at 54 4034 45. Tin, In sym
pathy with foreign markets, was- weak
and somewhat lower, closing weak at 523 JO
29 40. Pig Iron warrants were weak and
quoted nominally at51&50: Northern No. 1
foundry was nominally unchanged at 5210
23. Lake copper continues dull and un
changed at 517. Spelter ruled quiet, clos
ing at 54 57:04 G7U. The brokers price
for lead was 54 20 and for copper 517.
