SEW YORK STOCK MARKETS. Boalueaa "Wn Verr Apathetic nnd Trannactlons of Smnll Size. NEW TORK. May 1. Business was so apa thetic and so narrow today in the stock market that little can bo deduced to throw light on tho business or flrancial situation. Prices are as a rule slightly higher, but the only exr planation to bo offered is that room traders In stocks proved unable to get them down in plte of one or two Incidents rather unfavor able to values,- and turned perforce to tho long side In ordor to get the requisite movement in price to offer any field for trading n. all. Even Sugar, although still absorbing a large proportion of attention, became comparatively quiescent, and limited its range to a little over three points. The stock moved both above and below last night The failure of the Pennsylvania directors to advance tho semi annual dividend rate proved Ineffective to awaken the market from its apathy. When tho small bears rather timidly offered Penn sylvania down below last night without bring ing out any appreciable soles, the whole mar ket took on a firmer tone. Missouri Pacific rose nearly two points. But whether tho market moved up or down, the small profes sional traders failed equally to attract any fol lowing. The closo was dull and heavy, and net change were mixed. Tho local traction stocks, led by Metropolitan, showed rather acuta depression on account cf the Judicial confirmation of the constitutionality of the franchise tax law. New York Central rallied from yesterday's depression, on a rufnor of a eeitlement of the labor troubles. A small shipment of gold was announced to go -by FINANCIAINEWS' Thursday's French steamer. It Is genorally expected that largo shipments will be made next Saturday. The bond market was dull, and tho general tendency was reactionary. Total sales. 1.303.- 000. COERCION OF TURKEY, A Naval Demonstration Is "ot Con templated. NEW YORK. Mayl. A special to the Herald from Washington says: Naval coercion of Turkey to obtain a set tlement of the American missionary claims la not contemplated by the Administration. This atatement Is made upon .high au thority. Drastic measures against Tur key havo been urged by ex-Minister Angell. by politicians on behalf of mis sionaries, and by ministers of the gos pel, but tho President and Secretary Hay have not considered their suggestions. The Administration Is well satisfied with tho concessions mado by the Sublime Porto, and while It Is anxious that the Sultan 6hall keep his promise to pay the claims. It feels that he has already been considerate of this Government in per mitting the reconstruction of the American mission In Harpoot, and in the extension of Roberts College in Constantinople. It is authoritatively statod that the latest note presented to the Porte by Mr. Grls com, the American Charge. Is not an ulti matum but is merely a repetition of the demand for settlement. There Is no disposition in the State De partment to hasten unduly the Porte's answer. While an evasive reply is ex pected, an official said yesterday that tho Government would calmly await the out come, believing that it would be satis factory to Turkey as well as the United States. Thfcs offlclal said the President contomplated, as a remote possibility, the severance of diplomatic relations, and this possibility had almost disappeared as a re sult of the concessions the Sultan has already made. It is likely, from all that can be learned, that the extent of the ex pression of displeasure by this Govern ment at the continued failure of the Porte to pay the claims will be the main tenance of a Charge d'Affairs In Constan tinople. Minister Straus Is not expected to return, and until the claims are set tled, It to r.ot proposed that any Minister shall be sent to Turkey. The conclusion of the Administration not to adopt the suggestions that this Gov ernment make a naval demonstration In Turkish waters, is undoubtedly due to the knowledge that Europe would resent tho entrance of the United States into the Turkish question.
